Will threw a jab at rappers in 1999 mtv awards and said he doesn't have to cuss on every record to sell , eminem fired back with this in response to wills comment
Honestly don't think is was aimed solely at Eminem, but yeah this was a retaliation of what Will said... Will said something to the extent that he has never had to curse to get one of these (holding an award in his hand). So Em did this thinking it was about him, than Mr. Nice Guy said he could buy his radio station and send him home if he didn't stop... So Em stopped.
I think it was a nickelodeon award show where will smith gave the "I don't gotta cuss" speech, and it was somewhat of a jab at dr. dre who just put out "2001" (which is completely laced full of foul language lol) at that time.. eminem (being loyal to his mentor and the man who put him on) fired back at will on dre's behalf.. eminem didn't intend to full blown attack will smith with a diss track but wanted to at least address will smith with that bar in "the real slim shady".. eminem later on ran into jazzy jeff and sort of apologized and hoped will smith wasn't too upset but just wanted him to know he only said that out of his respect for dr. dre... jazzy jeff explains all of this himself in an interview years later and says will has no hard feelings about it...
You had to be there during that era to understand how HUGE this song was. I remember me and my friend found this song on the internet and listening to it the first time. We listened to it over and over and over
This song is pretty genius. Back in 2000, everyone teenager I knew listened to Eminem, even though very few listened to rap. Considering we're all middle class white kids from the UK, that's pretty impressive he had that reach. This song was played relentlessly and at the same time, is a mockery of it. Eminem was rapping about the mainstream pop culture and his ironic affect on it. All the "slim shadys who are just imitating" are the people eating up Eminem's music and then adopting his fashion style.
Same, I actually went to Warped Tour and he was there; he wasn't famous though and I thought he was kinda lame so I didn't go to see him. Worst decision ever haha
This came out 20 yrs ago, he's mimicking things goin on & happening on tv 20 yrs ago, like Boy bands, Tom Green's crazy show lol, Will Smith dissin him when he got his award. It's about the times early 2000's💜
Most people dont know that WIll smith actually took shots at Em .... it wasnt really a beef but will definitely mentioned EM in a song after that line , Will recorded a disstrack called "Mr Nice guy" he takes a few shots at Eminem but nothing really came out of it
He came out when i was going through a rough time in high school...fast foward 20 years i have 4 hirls who all grew up listening to him their entire lives...i was that mom...oh shit yer mom listens to him ...she lets you!!! This man has walked me through some dark ass times, everytime shit hit the fan ...he dropped a new song ...love this man
@@thanosdarkseid8695 That’s a huge lie you racist. A lot of black kids and adults love Eminem. In fact you pathetic racist, a lot of great African-American famous rappers also call him the best. Also, why did you watch idiot?
When your doing Eminems stuff search up the uncensored or dirty versions, it only takes a few seconds or minutes of extra searching but its worth it cause they censor out the really crazy funny wild shit he says but I appreciate the reaction, I just remember growing up listening to the uncensored albums and I was rolling in laughter and hyped at the same time🤘🏻🔥
I always forget that these songs came out 20 years ago and the younger generation does not automatically know the first Eminem records, like us growing up with him.
There was something magical about coming up in the age of this music. The first time this played on MTV, or a summer where every other car had this playing at top volume... Thanks for the trip back to those days.
I'll never forget watching it on T.V.!! I bet being there was epic! It's still in my opinion one of the most iconic performances from the MTV music Awards. That and, I believe, one of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers climbed up to the top of one the stage trellis's, it wasn't a performance just a stunt, but iconic none the less.
@@JenLyn78 wasn't it a guy from Metallica? I think it was the same year they pressed charges against Napster and a lot of music fans were pissed for a min. Dude, what a crazy year!
I WAS 9 WHEN THIS CAME OUT. EVERYONE FROM MY GENERATION (90'S KIDS) KNOWS HOW BADASS EM HAS BEEN. WE SEEN HIM EVOLVE THROUGH THE YEARS AND IT'S BEEN HELLA FUN TO WATCH! THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!!!!
Back in the day Will Smith was obviously gettin extremely jealous of Eminem's success, so he started going around saying that he doesn't have to cuss to sell records like Eminem does...This was Eminems reply to Will Smith...It wasn't really a major beef tho. Em treated it like a joke..And we all know that Will ain't beefin like that anyway
@@micahatkins5286 Well. what would you call it then? Will Smith broke out in the mid 80's and NWA's enormous popularity in Hip-Hop started just a couple of years after that..Now NWA probably used just the F-word for example about 10 times more than Eminem ever did on any of his albums. So why didn't Will ever comment on any of those other gangster rappers using extreme profanity all through the entire decade of the 90's. It wasn't until all the way to the year 2000 that Will Smith decided to single out Eminem for needing to use profanity to sell records...Ok, go ahead...You tell me then. If jealousy wasn't his motivation for coming out publicly bashing Eminem then what was it? Because basic human psychology 101 would describe those type of actions coming from a place that's rooted in jealousy..
I never owned his music but even i know a lot of his stuff word for word to this day just from how much it was played everywhere. You gotta apprentice his ability to make catchy, memorable music.
Omg I’ve never laughed so hard in my life? Does nobody remember when Tom Green had a tv show and he really did put his bum on some guys face? On live tv?
@@pumpkinlyd4409 when he puts the fucking mouse all up in his mouth in that one movie, when he's trying to get the snake to eat it ... I'll never be able to forget that as much as I've tried
2:25 He didn’t have to be creative to come up with this fridge imagery. He’s from extremely poor circumstances in Detroit. He’s probably seen that exact fridge more times than he cares to remember in his own life, it’s just that he had absolutely no fear when it came to laying his own history out there.
The production line of Slim Shadies was a shot at the industry. Once someone gets some heat, record companies and venues like MTV would sign anything and everything that looked or sounded like the hot artist. They would literally transform some people into the mold of the artist's look and sound trying to cash in on it whether the fake-artist lasted 5 minutes or 5 years. Look at all the boy bands, NKOTB, NSYNC, 98 Degrees, O-Town, Backstreet Boys...some were the originals of the time and some were copycats trying to ride the coattails of the original while it was hot. It's a death toll of a genre when in order to continue the success of it companies need to sign anyone and everyone to put new blood into the machine.
Have you guys ever seen his performance of this at the VMAs? I know I'm a bit late, but that performance is legendary! Keep up the awesome work, your videos are great!
Definitely only 1 Slim Shady and I met him years ago in Indianapolis when he was still with D-12 which I met them too! At that time Eminem's daughter, Hailey was still a little girl like 2 years old and we talked to each other and shared photos of our families n it was such a privilege to have a nice relaxing concert with him n sharing stories n jokes. Eminem is such a sweetheart and a gentleman n before he left I got a kiss from him! It was a memory I will always cherish love u eminem!
Its just back in the day people WENT OFF on his shit. Just how blunt he was, and never censored ANYTHING. He just said whatever crazy stuff that popped up in his head... Mostly obscene stuff. LOL The genius of it all, was that he hid behind the "Slim Shady" character, and was only halfway responsible for it (at least to himself). Ofcourse his skills as a writer and emcee were on point, and the MAJOR cherry on top was DR DRE PRODUCED IT! I mean...... Dr Dre beats were unmatched! EVERYBODY wanted to get their hands on the Dre beats and production! Insane to think about it now....... kinda bittersweet
I'm watching this reaction vid for the first time. The part where Em was squatting on someone singing "My bum is on your lips..." He mentioned Tom Green, a comedian in the 90s who actually had a song on "The Tom Green Show" called "My bum is on your Lips" He was funny but very over the top, even for 90s standards
I remember when I first discovered Eminem because it was earlier than most since I subscribed to The Source and heard him on Anthem 99 and Fuck Off with Kid Rock in 98
She has already listened to it....she's singing along so many times,I thought maybe bcoz they had the captions on,but her singing matched the beat too... atleast be real
