I sold Emm her 1'st new car in Sarnia Ont, a Civic, 20+ yrs ago & I didn't know who she was. She put a CD into the stereo to hear the radio quality. I liked the song & asked who was the singer. Her Dad replied "it's Emm & she wrote that song". Emm was only about 20 & she went on to her long singing career incl. backup to David Bowie etc. This song is one of my fav's & showcases Emm's talent well. Best wishes Emm---Wayne.
I can absolutely relate to that. Everyone always asks "why are you listening to all those sad songs when you're going through ....?" For me if I don't process right away, I suppress and we all know just how unhealthy that is. So I basically just push myself through the pain, confusion, isolation or whatever type of negativity I need to in order to get it behind me a little faster than just meandering through the motions of everyday life faking smiles and the expected "I'm doing well, thanks for asking". I hope this makes sense.
The combination of the video, the poetry with its haunting image of black, and the powerful references to destiny all contribute to the beauty of Emm gryner's song.
I spoke with Emm recently and she told me this song was inspired by the Film "Thirteen" starring Holly Hunter and Rachel Evan Wood. One line in particular "I role my green sleeves over ruby" is a direct reference to the scene where one character Tracey, pulls her long-sleeved top down to hide the deep cuts she's been inflicting upon her arms. It is a truly beautiful song and the video captures it's haunting qualities perfectly.
I discovered Emm by reading her book, The Healing Power of Singing! It's the only autobiography I've ever not put down. This girl is so gifted and embodies a most beautiful spirit! ❤ thank you, Emm.
6 months ago I would have said Nina without hesitating, but Gyner's version has really grown on me and now I dunno. I think I have to give it to Gyner.
this song often makes me cry, or want to... Usually i'm crying by the end. Very powerful writing and performance. i can't imagine this doesn't deeply touch a lot of women.
Lyrics: Night can't come quick enough My faults shine in the sun A train bridge of spies Watches all the cars collide I roll my green sleeves over ruby I don't blame you for doing it to me Real girls don't take aim Like kings do these days I made my mind up to be a black-winged bird Never turn my head for how things were Leave the bluest skies for boys to burn And I'll soar on my way Sad as the state Of things we can't change Now we're paper dolls all aflame In houses that all look the same Rows of regret An arson for a wilderness I hide my saints in the willow trunk You started me on this junk Now my black lungs are blue But I'm still singing to you
This is a nice song but i really really love Nina Persson's version much more because i'm a really big fan of her and The Cardigans because Nina has the most beautiful voice ever and she's so talented that she can sing all kinds of music and it's always beautiful and all the songs she has written and made for The Cardigans are the best music ever in the world.
There is a lot of crying on this video's comments, haha, sorry no disrespect, just felt SOME levity was in order, Emm you have been constant on my ipod the last few months :)
PLASTICINEtm i'm so agree with you on that one because Nina Persson's voice are so beautiful and unique that Nina Persson will always be the best female singer ever whitout a doubt.
