you haters realize Def Leppard has not only gave Emm full endorsements and thumbs up for this cover (which she originally did several years before this recording) but they have since become good friends.
I thought I heard Emm say once that when she asked Def Leppard for permission to cover this song, they were pretty happy about it, as nobody had ever "officially" covered their music before. She definitely made it her own.
Sorry but I grew up with Def Leppard and I always thought this song sucked and was overplayed. Her version adds an amazing new depth and beauty to the song. Try opening your mind and expanding your horizons!
@donutsprinkles99 I like that you are trying to actually trash talk me when you are so clearly in the wrong. Am I suppose to be offended by being 32 and that I used to play WoW? Are those somehow embarrassing things? It's flattering you took the time to view my profile. Now if only you could go learn to comprehend the English language. You started the so called trash talk when you felt the need to reply to my comment in the first place.
covers aren't suppose to be EXACTLY like the original. you put your own thing into covers. it shouldn't be the same as the original. that would just be plain boring. and i think this cover was pretty good. i haven't heard a cover like this of the song. but the scratches were kinda out of place i must say. but it was pretty creative.
well ok i admit your opinion but my slogan is "All or nothing" and in this case if i have to ride an elevator as you said and the only choice i have is this version... well i prefer not to listen anything...you understand all these blur of words... i prefer the original and nothing else saying in short hihihi ;)
Great voice but there's no similarity to the original song and this except she's singing the words. if she would have incorporated some of the same chords or notes into her piano, that would be different. Still, she's talented. You can't argue that at all.
It isn't suppose to be sung in it's original form. That's the point. To show how great these rock ballads can be as a slowed down "Girl Version" Check out her cover of Crazy Train and The Day we hit the coast.
yeah the issue a lot of people are having is that it's out of context. a lot of people complaining probably do in fact listen to things other than rock - you don't need a phd to listen to jazz.
This version is the one I wanted to make romantic love and be wild at the same time... of course the original version rocks.. but very cool cover. I love how they made it theirs. Great!
agreed. the acoustic cover of "hey ya" thats been floating around youtube was perfect because it exposed the depth to the song a lot of people overlooked and put it into a new context. she's tried to add a different dimension to the song that doesn't exist. great voice, great performance - poor choice of cover.
Absolutely amazing how Emm reinvented this song and you wouldn't know it was def leppard unless you knew the lyric. Fantastic. Emm is such a talent and has written some amazing songs. Check out her New Book.
DEF LEPPARD LOVES THIS VERSION.They link to it on their website. From DefLeppardDOTcom: "Our good friend Emm Gryner has just done yet another fantastic version of our "POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME" This girl is SOOOO talented, she should be massive, check out her stuff and look out for her new CD, out soon!" If you knew what the band had in mind when they wrote it you'd know that they love this cover. She doesn't need your advice. SHE IS A MEMBER OF DAVID BOWIE'S BAND. What are your credentials?
Just been on Def Leppard´s homepage. They recommended people to visit RU-vid. Their comment is "Our good friend Emm Gryner has just done yet another fantastic version of POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME". I think that it´s a great comment. But as a Def Leppard-fan, nothing beats the real thing.
@iTzTheXboxGamers Well, the original band likes it and Emm is proud of it, so I'm pretty sure she isn't too concerned about your opinion on either her talent or her looks (by the way, I don't quite understand why that matters).
The reason music has gone shit these days is because record companies in the wake of the internet era have made a lot of mistakes whilst trying to stay afloat. The emergence of so many covers is because record companies need to make money, and fast. Covers are the fastest way for them to do it. Emm Gryner is a very talented artist. She has released quite a few albums of her own songs. I am happy to say I own almost all of her albums. She very consistently writes good material, so leave her alone
if i didn't know the original, i would have loved this. as talented as such performers are, i'm getting tired of lounge novelty covers. i don't care how many different voicings and inversions you use or how many years you spent at berklee, i'd rather hear something something original as opposed to classic songs rendered as background music. richard cheese included.
What makes the original a hit (and all of Leppard's material) wasn't just the lyrics. In fact the actual lyrics aren't important at all. It was how it sound and fit in the context of the song. I wouldn't even call this a cover. It's a whole different song.
beautiful girl. simply put...u r musical inspiration. and to a fellow up and comming (well, trying to be anyway ) female singer, u give me much inspiration. Any feedback and tips from u would be much appreciated. and if ya know any little birds whose ears i can sing into or pass a demo onto would be of great help. im sure u prob won't ever see my little comment, but hey, a girl can dream cant she. heather102379 my vid.
I think he would appreciate it, she's taking a great song and making it her own. I'm sure he prefers it to be ROCKED out, but he's an artist, so is she, I think there would be some mutal respect...if you don't get it, that's ok, us artists stick together!!
Emm is one of the greatest original Canadian song writers and artist of all time. She does covers like this to end shows a lot of time and her fans absolutely love iit when we hear HER take a rock song like this.
The song was written with the backing instruments in mind, drums, guitar, bass (perhaps a little keyboard) and not to mention a MALE VOCALIST. Rock may have evolved from the Blues, but what you're doing to this song is just disgracing it. A little constructive criticism. Never try to do a cover like this, for a rock band's song. Ever again. Stick to things like I don't know, Alicia Keys? Don't try and fix anything that doesn't need fixing, and don't break what isn't yours. Ta.
It's not a cover! The whole point of Girl Versions is to take hard rocking rock songs in a completely different (like melancholic!) direction. I thought the exact thing you did at first. I am a very big Def Leppard fan and hated this at first but as I listened to it several times it grew on me and now I now love it. I consider it a completely different song, but with the same lyrics. Both versions are great, but very, very different. You can't even really call it a "cover" because she's not "covering" the song. Instead she's taken the lyrics and turned the song from a very energetic song into a ballad. Comparing the two versions is like comparing apples to oranges in a way. Give it a chance and I'll bet you'll start to enjoy it.
J. Christine This is still a cover, please don't get me confused. It's not a "different song", it's a cover. A ballad cover. But if you like it, great! Also, why does a "girl version" has to be in a complete different direction? Just as a male version can be in the same direction as the female original.
and it isn't supposed to be anything like the original, that's the freaking point of Girl Versions - to take masculine energy and feminize it. You either get it or you don't /shrug
How in all hell is that constructive? That's just mindless criticism... "Yes, play something like Alicia Keys, because that has already a piano in it... PERFECT! You can be truly original when you use the same instruments..." A cover is not something to 'fix' a song. It does not need the same instruments, or even the same gender vocalist. This is HER interpretation of the song, and you don't HAVE to listen to it. Go annoy the dance-head idiots who destroyed Irish traditional songs instead...
The reason why music has gone to shit is because of all these cover artists that add their own shine to their songs. Sure, music evolves but is that a good thing? No! The music that was written decades ago was written for that era, a lot of it heartfelt about the things that happened at their time. The influences of the world around them made the songs, the artists worked damned hard to get where they were and not to have them re-written to suit other eras of music. Write your own.
