Thank you for sharing. Our spaces, where we spend the most hours per day, are rather important for our well being. When space is at a minimum, placement of the bed in front of a window, can act as a cornice. My favourite repeating bedroom pattern will always be toile. Thank you.

I have an almost full wrought iron bed which I had to make myself a custom box springs. I paint the bed every few years. The best part is it is up against a window and at night I can see the stars. I have beautiful linens…all muslin from the closed cotton mills of New England.

Haha this was lovely! That valance monologue is epic! Only there's styles of framed beds that would look rediculous with a valance, so I'd have to assumr she means unframed box beds, high "continental" style beds without a baseboard etc. It really depends on the bed and the style of furnishings, but I agree box beds look really unfinished without a valance of some sort. It's funny, bc the idea of covering a bedroom in a single tiny print on absokutely everything is about as old school English as tradidions get. To the point where it look malplaced in other parts of the world. Marvelous video, thank you!

My biggest mistake was buying a bed with drawers, two either side. Once in situ it looked perfect until I realised I couldn’t open the two drawers nearest the headboard because the bedside tables on which stood huge lamps, blocked the way. On the other side of the coin, my brother lived in a city centre apartment and bought a double bed where the whole bed opened up on one side, hinged the length of the other. The storage was phenomenal and very easy to access - assuming the pillows were firmly placed on top!

She's so right about the bed valance. We took our bed skirt off recently to wash it and the room is totally ruined as the base of the bed is not upholstered and it just looks awful. Your bed may not need a bed valance, but our bed definitely needs it.

Personally living alone with a dog I've always had a 3/4 bed = 120 cms which corresponds with most Antique French beds and I live in France. I use two thin single duvets in winter and one in summer and tons of pillows to prop me up. I cannot imagine a king size bed in my home and most of my guest rooms have the same 3/4 beds as people usually stay for short hols. A friend of mine bought a king size for his bedroom and it took up all the room, made zero sense. Bigs rooms, lots of kids and labradors ok I get it !

I have an old iron bedstead over 100 years old. I think it's an exception to having a bed skirt covering the pretty ornate legs.

I would gather that the bed base valance would depend on the bed type? My bed base is modern with a bit of a sunken mattress and the legs and base are exposed… no way to get a valance on there ..but in thinking about it, that would completely change the look and feel of the bed… so maybe when I get tired of it, a good way to change for a different look?
@regisnyder

My question is how does one get a bed skirt (how we say it here in America) to fit neatly when there are wooden beams supporting the bed? The beams would cause a tragic draping mess!
@dutcheyeliner
@dutcheyeliner 2 года назад
They cut out the fabric to miss the spots where the beams would go, so you can fit it neatly so it would drape on all four sides and there wouldn’t be fabric on the beam areas

I have a new but old looking metal bed with headboard and footboard - my bedroom look is vintage, which I love but I did not realize that having a footboard was going to "limit" my choice of spread types. The only type of spread that really works is the Pintuck Ruffle Skirt Bedspread because otherwise the metal frame shows beneath. I like the feminine look, but the colors of this design are so limited. I regret having bought this kind of bed frame.

I have struggled with the two key elements discussed here. I've resisted having a headboard or anything hanging over my bed here in California ever since I woke up one morning to the house rocking like a boat--earthquake! I really need to explore the idea of something connected to the frame but soft and padded above with little hard material. Also, having a bed valance can be an issue if you have a cat who likes going beneath the bed, as mine does. Right now, I have an extra large duvet that hangs over, but I'd love to find a valance she won't ruin too quickly. I adore the bedroom in the video! Slowly working towards that look with mine.

I have never been in CA during an earthquake, but people have told me of their terror during large ones. My head and footboards are attached to the bedframe, as many are, so it would not be an issue. It could be a viable option for you. I hope you find something to suit you.
@patriciasalem3606
@patriciasalem3606 2 года назад
@@leighsutherland6222 Thank you! During the one in question, I at first thought my dog had jumped up on the bed with me and was bounding around. It was indeed terrifying. You'd be surprised what can break free during a large seismic event. I think something small that wouldn't topple over on my head if it came loose from the frame would work, though.
@SaLiDeLune
@SaLiDeLune 2 года назад
If painting or wallpapering is an option you might be able to create a "headboard" directly on the wall. You could even make a patchwork from different wallpapering swatches. Or, you could hang a long (tuffed?) cushion directly on the wall. If it does come down, at least it won't hurt you. Hope you find a solution that keeps you safe.

Craziest bed I’ve ever seen is at my brother’s house! I guess the previous owners had a water bed. They actually REMOVED the floor and built something underneath the house AND a surround for the bed that you have to CRAWL over to reach the mattress! To remove the apparatus he will have to put in an entire new floor! Dumb! Dumb! Dumb!

hmm, I disagree about the valence (aka bed skirt). my bed is a beautiful French inspired king (sorry, Emma) with soft gray vintage velvet upholstery in the headboard, as well as all around the bottom edges (sides and front of the bed) with upholsterers tacks and pretty feet I do not want to cover! that said, I find valences charming otherwise. agree we need more visual examples :-)

Nope. Nope. Nope. I am blessed with a 26 foot long bedroom, with 10-12 foot width (shape is not perfectly squared). Yet, even if I were in a tiny room, I’d still have a king or California king sized bed. My mattress is a double pillow top, so it is quite high. There is no going back! If I had to turn sideways and give up my nightstands to fit the bed in the allotted space, I would! I’d even give up the head and footboards to have my king-sized bed. It is all based on personal preference. The rooms you showed are pretty, but I love my big bed so much I would give up design for for it. It seems that many American homes are larger than those in Europe, but most people here are happy with queen beds. Some are even happy with double beds. I think people should get what they can afford, and what they like.
