floor wrote this song herself for her mom who has rheumatism. Emma could relate, cause her mom is a cancer survivor. So she felt the emotion about her mother also
Thank you for the shout-out! I'm so glad my translations help people getting to know our wonderful artists & their stories, there is however 1 other season I really enjoyed watching, and that's the season where o'g3ne participated in Beste Zangers, they are a group of 3 Dutch sisters and they are incredibly talented, their harmonies will absolutely blow you away so I can really recommend you checking them out or even reacting to them, it will be worth it! :D Their version of 'Clown" on beste zangers back in 2016 will probably be the best introduction. ☺
@@VocalSplendorStudios So do I! I of course like Floor her genre the most, but I can't help but melt over O'g3ne their voices whenever I hear them, and if you decide to make a video for it: you pronounce it as o-gene, they all have blood group O & the 3 stands for the 3 sisters, just a little cute detail. :)
Just want to say thank you Denise for doing the translation of the show for us. Your episode 1 translation appeared in my recommended list and I watched it as soon as I saw it. Watching Floor's show seemed like a must see and I loved it. So, once again, thank you x
Og3ne were indeed fantastic during that season, but I think their most spine-tingling performance was of a Dutch language song called ‘Het is over,’ which might be a slight hurdle for non-Dutchies, but I consider it one of the best *ever* Beste Zangers performances of all time, together with e.g. Glennis Grace’s ‘Afscheid’ which catapulted her out of national - and so undeserved! - obscurity overnight (even though international recognition would have to wait for some more years 🙂.)
Floor wrote this song to her mother. Because her mom has terrible pain and aches from rheuma and other health problems. The original arrangement of the song is similar to this performance. Yep, Denise Hofs is the channel to watch the show with english translation.
No, the original arrangement sounds very different. The original version has a much more rock feel due to the use of keyboards and the drums and guitar kicking in halfway in the song. She did acoustic versions too however. There is a piano version which is similar to Emma’s rendition. Floor has also sung it with the Red Limo string quartet.
Emma is the artist that surprise me the most. I knew Henk already so I am not surprised at all. But Emma... in the first show I was like meh... barbie sing cheap stuff. WOW I'VE BEEN TOTALLY WRONG. (serves me well for pre-judging people :P)
I watched the entire show which was subtitled in English (Denise) and it was quite a wonderful experience. There must be something in the water in the Netherlands!
In a reaction Floor talked about the fear she had before the show started about what if they sing something very personal from me and do it in a way I would think: oh no not this way! But she said that fear was gone immediately after I met all of you. About Emma she mentioned she had doubts before the show about what they would have in common, looking at the age difference and totally different background, but after Emma had sung Strong she said: well it did not matter at all, we have so much in common: she has a mom she loves so much and she is a singer. To Emma herself right after the performance she said: the way you did this so beautifully is a gift!❤
Emma did a great job on such a very personal song to Floor. The whole episode is worth watching (if anyone hasn't) - The other singers & host spent time discussing why Floor (who they all are clearly impressed with) isn't more popular in her home country ... and it's basically said that her projects all have the "stigma" of being "metal," and many dismiss the whole genre as "noise" and don't bother listening to it. And that's just sad, IMHO. I had a great piece of Frank Zappa audio (that I lost) where he said, "You may not like it all, but if you don't know that it even exists, how are you going to make up your mind?" And because of that, I just say, "There are good and bad songs in every genre of music. I like good songs." (which this one is.)
The band Floor was fronting at the time was called After Forever (not Always Forever). And Floor wrote this very personal song herself entirely both lyrics and music. She wrote it for her mother who has been suffering from artritis and is in pain often. Yet she has always been there for her children (Floor and her sister) and often pretending she was not in pain just so her children could have a happy childhood without worries about their mom not feeling well. Floor stil is basically unable to sing this song herself without tearing up. She actually sang it on her solo tour with her parents in the audience this year. She couldn't make it to the end without crying while singing this song in front of her mother. Floor is an incedibly gifted, harworking and also very emotional woman full of empathy.
Same here. I watch the show with English sub titles. I can only imagine how the rest of the cast's minds were blown when the metal singer blew the doors off with the first song of the show.
Emma did a wonderful impression of this song. She moved Floor and others to tears. This song was written by Floor for her Mom and performed by her band After Forever. And yes, I find Emma adorable also. Her other songs on this show were also wonderful.
*When, where & who* : recorded on a rainy April evening 2019, outdoors at resort Atzaró on Ibiza Island. BesteZangers season #12 hosted by Jan Smit. Not only Emma Heesters (and the other 6) sang live, also the MF band displayed their musical skills live! So, also credits to the *MF Band* with: Marcel Fisser (bandleader & lead guitar) - Marijn van den Berg (drums) - Serge Bredewold ( bass guitar) - Edwin de Groot (guitar / backing vocals) - Gregor Hamilton (synthesizer / keyboards) - Martijn de Laat (trumpet) - Arno Slijper (piano / keyboards) - Lesley van der Aa (backing vocals) and multi-instrumentalist Hubert Heeringa (the headscarfed violinist, saxofonist, etc). A FTV Production.
After Forever is like musical theater+metal. One of the reasons I listen to them. Most bands I listen nowadays have members of After Forever in them : D
Others have already pointed the reason Floor had for writing this song. She was so emotionally connected to the song that live performances became mentally draining - to even just keep it together on the stage. She stopped singing it and even listening to it later on. That is why I was quite surprised that it would be performed by somebody there. If you want to hear Floor singing it live, I am including a link with a performance from 2007 in which she is accompanied only by a piano - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rGCoiSWZjM4.html As far as her previous bands are concerned, Floor was writing the vast majority of lyrics for them and occasionally some music, as well (this song would be the prime example of that). If you want to hear how her first band sounded, here is a link to a live performance of a song that showcases Floor´s singing abilities in 2007 in the best way possible: After Forever - Dreamflight (live at ProgPower 2007) - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GBLke4zeZuI.html Her second band ReVamp was much heavier in terms of instrumentation and compositions and Floor started to use much more distortion in her singing - experimenting with it. Here are three examples: ReVamp - Disdain (live at Graspop 2010) - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tIqzPXzhEuw.html ReVamp - The Trial of Monsters (live at Graspop 2010) - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qLEcnFBOa_E.html ReVamp - Wild Card (live at Bloodstock 2014) - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IBgVEhODf1c.html
You should add this one to the list imo :) ReVamp - The Trial of Monsters Live at Graspop (2010) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qLEcnFBOa_E.html
Wonderful reaction to this lovely song. I‘ve listened to it 4-5 times and still tear up each time knowing the back story. I totally agree with you about American pop singers. There’s an honesty and purity to this show and singers that’s speaks to me. Hanks cover of Sound of Silence was awesome also.
Ya... This song is very touching... And Emma blew my mind. She made an emotional performance. From the moment I listened to her I started crying... I knew the song because I'm a Floor fan since After Forever and I loved the way Emma sang it... Thanks for your reaction!
Emma sings kind of like Christina Aguilera. Very beautiful voice. Floor feels it. It is about her mother and dealing with a difficult health situation.
@@rikderks5099 If you watch the whole Beste Zangers show, Floor talks about the song and why she wrote it. The episode has been translated with subtitle to English.
Floor can't perform this song without crying. She chose to sing it anyway on her solo tour through The Netherlands after this show ended. There's a video of her performing this song on youtube. Her mom was in the audience that night and you guessed, she cried at the end. Awww. And when Floor cries, we cry.
i have seen various ignorant comments about the "hot babe/blonde in the couch" as i have watched over theese videos from this show. And it kind of warms me deeply,to see that once Emma stepped up to grab the mic,she was the one that did A) The right song choice! B) Managed to bring Floor to tears! That tells you something..... Now granted,Floor is a woman full of emotions on a daily basis, but she also doesnt turn into tears if she doesnt feel what you are bringing,or appreciate the talent that you bring. To the comments i choose to react as "oh yeah,Emma is one strikingly beautiful lady!",but i love even more the fact that she (for me personally,as an outsider,im not Dutch i mean) was the shows biggest surprise! This might be the strongest performance for me (no puns intended lol) Closely followed by Floors "Winner" and the amazing Phantom Of The Opera duet!
I agree. Emma handles herself professionally in every setting. She has the total package. She's a very skillful performer and singer but what makes her special is that she really inhabits the songs she sings with emotional honesty. This was my favorite performance of her's with her duet with Henk my number two. I'm exited to see where her career goes!
@@VocalSplendorStudios It also struck me with Emma, that if you watch other performances she does, like when she was tributing Henk with "Sex Machine" by James Brown, wich is one of Henks favourite songs, shes a full on entertainer, she has tons of eyecontact with her audience, interacts with them. And i started looking up interviews with her,i was hoping to get to know her more. And something she said just prior to&after this, was that she tried to not look TOO MUCH on Floor, especially after she noticed Floor bursting into tears. Because Emma was afraid to get too emotional herself,so she basically defended herself enough,so she could deliever a worthy tribute to Floor. Just shows how much respect Emma had towards Floors own song, and how much she could relate because of her mom who had suffered too. Took me awhile to gather theese thoughts lol,so thats why i came tripping back.
This is the 12th season of the show, also in the earlier seasons were great performances. Glennis Grace, og3ne, Anita Meijer, Trijntje Oosterhuis, Davina Michelle and many more did fantastic songs over the years. But you are right Emma did also a great performance 👍
Thank you for bringing this into my world. The Netherlands are next door neighbours to Germany, but I don't know any of these artists (except for Floor of course).
Emma reminds me a bit of a young Mariah Carey. I saw Mariah perform live 1997, I was just 11 years old and my sister always reminds me that I cried trought the whole show. Emma's amazing and deserves some more recognition, I hope her upcoming album will do great.
Like many others (I'm guessing), I followed Floor to this show and didn't really know everyone else. Now I've been turned onto Rolf, Emma and the others and I feel pretty damn fortunate. Who knew a show from The Netherlands was going to explode on RU-vid? I'm sure the producers, and a few of the lesser-known singers, are thanking their stars for reaction videos! Cheers.
This Dutch show actually also is an international franchise and they have shows in other European countries (the names are different so you need to check the Wikipedia page for: The Best Singers (series) ) so they could in theory be picked up by an US TV network as well !
Great and honest review, thank you! This show (shown on cable state tv, not commercial) every weeks gets many viewers. And it just proves that high quality and great entertainment is possible even without a big budget!
Hé. "De Beste Zangers van Nederland" is now in season 12. this concept started in 5 juli 2009 (some times a double season in one year.) this is about celebrating one of the seven artist on the sofa.
Aww, this gorgeous young lady is amazing. The song is just beautiful and she sings it with a lot of emotion an vulnerability. Tugs on the heartstrings in a major way, like music, and art in general is supposed to. A bit more popy than what I usually go for, but wonderful none the less.
Really need to listen to Henk Poort's Sound of Silence. He was really worried about using distortion in his voice, but he killed! Floor posted that it went to number one on the Dutch charts the next day. I was hoping he would have attempted one of Floor's more operatic songs, but this was great.
Great reaction again, and also what you said about TV. So sad all these idols, got talent and the voice shows seek new talent, make it a contest. A focus on having fun and improving yourself would already be so much better. But this format, where they sing songs for someone else, something to connect with some new version and challenging to step out of one's comfort zone really makes good music. No egocentric judges, not ok new artists that can be caught with prisonlike contracts (cough 5H cough), polished into something generic or just dumped after the show is over. There is a lot of talent out there that just needs the opportunity to be seen. Ironically, Floor was almost unknown in the Netherlands! Mainstream radio plays the same few pop songs over and over and with only a few exceptions metal just doesn't get played.
Besides being a fantastically talented singer, Emma's also a very beautiful young woman sporting here a very tight, very short and very low cut black dress and manages to pull it off without looking tacky, which is not easy. I find dress sense an often overlooked part of being a performer , but in this series Emma consistently was dressed impeccable with each performance.
Amazing performance of that song, Floor wrote this one. Please can you react to Devin Townsend Project - The Death of Music ( live from royal albert hall)
Do some After Forever reactions. Some recommendations: "Pledge of Allegiance #1", "Monolith of Doubt", "Emphasis". But if you want something to "ease" you in i would recommend "Energize me". After Forever was among the pioneers of Symphonic Metal, it is generaly heavier than Nightwish. Epica is only second in popularity to nightwish in this genre and it is basically an offshoot of After Forever. With Floor ultimately joining Nightwish, After Forever can be considered a seminal band in the genre.
The band name is after forever i was see t 4 time fal in love in her voice and folow floor til now, maby becource im dutch I love to folow your comments 👌
You've been enjoying the singers from the Netherlands so much that I'll show a jewel from another little european country, Portugal. Look up the band Madredeus (madre as in spanish, deus as in latin) and start with the song ao longe o mar (far away, the sea). The singer's name is Teresa Salgueiro (the u is silent and ei is a diphtong that sounds like hey). It's something very different, fado/classical fusion. Have fun.
In After Forever Floor ages are 16 -24. She is not the shape is in now but you can still see some muscles in her biceps. She did the same thing then and now same kind of music. Henk killed the sound of silence he is very talented.
The concept of the show Beate zangers (Best singers): It acually is a bit confusing name, because there are a lot good singers. Artists in this show are not particurly or perse high selling artists. But in this edition Floor is the high selling artist, though because of the metal genre not an artist with lots of airplay. Hardly people know her in the Netherlands outside the metal (and Folk) scene. The idea is that the singers dont sing for an audience but for each other. They study each others life and sing songs from each other or related to each other. Every week all sing for one of them. There is no contest, no winner. They all are winners. All go beyond their own repertoire. Often the arrangements are done with another view. And that makes it all very interesting. Special note for Samantha Steenwijk who translated one After Forever track into Dutch and sang it for Floor. Amazing as is very difficult to capture the feel and spirit of a song once translated. (Not even her core thing as singer)
I agree with you about the American music scene these days. I believe the new golden age of music is in Europe these days, in particular the northern countries. There are the odd USA, or Canadian bands that shine through, however when looking closer they are usually independent, or signed/produced under a European Label... lol. thanks for these reaction vids :)
I personally think that the biggest difference is because of the size of the country (17 million People) and the few people speaking Dutch as first or 2nd language (28 million). Dutch songs never get very popular around the world and Dutch singers never really become huge celebrities. Like Ruben on the show still works as a waiter also. And the ones that do sing English and even become famous "abroad" (songs like little green bag, radar love, Venus etc) those singers are not treated as stars, and they never will be because behaving as one is not really accepted here. Most do well on their kindness and accessibility. There is a Dutch saying, a credo/motto almost: " just be normal, that's crazy enough". This show started out as a competition and it still is sorta, with a daily winner picked by the main guest, but it's not ...well.. Dutch?.. to be so competitive or better than others when it comes to things like music and art. But the same goes for Belgium and many other, mostly smaller countries. Singers and TV celebrities in countries like Germany and France do have a bigger status.
After her performance, Emma told the group she closed her eyes, becouse she was afraid that looking at Floor would maybe make her too emotional to sing. : )
Floor's former band's name was "After Forever", not "Always Forever"! :-] And they are usually classified as Gothic metal rather than symphonic metal, although they featured elements of both styles. I still enjoyed your video, like always. :-) Yes, Beste Zangers is fun to watch and all the participants are great this year.
Emma's last name is pronounced as "Hay stirs" (to use English words), not "Heaters" LOL... great reaction and analysis, btw Also love to see your reaction of Emma's duet with Henk Poort from the last episode.
There are so many great dutch singers, particularly some colleagues of Floor in Symphonic metal: Simone Simons (Epica) Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation) Anneke van Giersbergen (the gathering) Might be good to react to them sometime, too, while you're on a Dutch streak ^_-
Another great reaction :) This song was something else, especially with the surrounding context in the show that got missed from the clip. Psss; you have a typo in Emma Heesters on the thumbnail.
I liked Emma's version more than I expected, it's definitely IMO her best performance on the show so far. Which is understandable given that it's a song she could also find strong emotional attachment with. Don't know if anyone else has posted either of these, but if you were wondering what the original sounded like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vV7SjqwuHhI.html And here is a live cut from a acoustic set After Forever did in 2007: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rGCoiSWZjM4.html
So two little things. This show is from public television. If it would be made commercially I'm sure it would've had some form of viewer voting or competition. Secondly, Floor Jansen is specifically not from Holland but she is from the Netherlands. While Holland is the most populated part of the country and has Amsterdam in it, it's not the entire country. Just a pedantic nitpick.
Thanks for the clarification. That makes sense that this show is public television and that is why there is no viewer voting, competition or drama. That is why I like it so much. And the geography of Europe isn't a strong point for most Americans. I'm guessing that Holland is a province of the Netherlands so thanks for the clarity. Americans learn European history and geography from an American perspective, which is albeit, limited.
@@VocalSplendorStudios The whole Holland thing isn't entirely your fault. It's actually North and South Holland, two provinces. They also historically held a large part of our shipyards. And back in the day the national unity was weaker thus sailors would say they're from Holland instead of the kingdom. Thus the name became quite widely used. But it's a bit akin to say England when you mean the UK. But we're a pragmatic people so we adopted it in our tourist branding ensuring it will forever be misused... Also the Netherlands has quite the extensive public television system but it's come under more and more pressure lately as viewing numbers plummet thanks to the internet destroyer regular TV viewing. That puts pressure on a tax funded enterprise, if only a specific demographic makes use of it. I got to admit I never really watch TV either but I've started to tune in for this show. Because of Floor...
I'm Dutch and I didn't know most of the singers on the show; only Floor Jansen and Henk Poort. In hindsight, I might have heard a Rolf Sanchez song. Mainly because I share your sentiment: pop music and the culture around it is kind of dead. So I don't listen to the radio or watch TV. This show is a discovery for me as well.
Who can help? I an not a music expert, though it seems that there is something special about this song. Is it correct the in the verses there is no chord change, whereas the vocal line there somehow is. Is this correct? It sounds very cool somehow. Thanks
Floor wrote this song. And there is good news. Floor said that the COVID epidemic enabled here to take the time to write her own music again. I am very curious.
Ty for do this song:Floor was never been able to sing this song properly by there self/And Emma close there eyes alot i think also to avoit eye contact otherwise 2 crying women in the show/ Emma mother have survived canser and Floor had written this song for her mother with rheumatism. both Mothers where Strong/So there was a conection between this 2 woman about this song STRONG
You can find two versions of that song with Floor singing it on YT, one is the studio-version from 2005 ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vV7SjqwuHhI.html ), when Floor was 24 years old, the other one is an - so i think - cellphone-made video of an acoustic version ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rGCoiSWZjM4.html ) of the song from 2007, where the acoustic quality is astoundingly good, but the cellphone seems to be damned too heavy to hold still... Both versions are very touching, maybe (to me) the acoustic version a little bit more, because its closer, more intimate, and it hits me like a kiss.
Here's a video of Floor singing Strong. It's recorded from the audience but it's just Floor and a Piano so it still sounds ok. You can see why she finds this song difficult to hear and why she only performed it live a few times. The sadness in her voice and on her face breaks your heart. After Forever Strong ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rGCoiSWZjM4.html
Because you praised that format, are you aware that while "De beste zangers" originates from the Netherlands, they have licenced it to the other countries? Quite a few European countries have their own national versions of the show and they might have produced already ten season worth of similar material, some of it uploaded to RU-vid. It would be a cavern sized rabbit hole to try to check it en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Best_Singers_(series)
Thanks Valerie for the nice reaction, i think you have all ready found the videos of After Forever but here is the original. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vV7SjqwuHhI.html
