Rewatching these older vlogs, and so funny how you talk about the weird lady watering cardboard in a raised bed, and in your most recent video, you had tuned into the lady laying cardboard on your raised beds and then watering it 😂💚

Just rediscovered this video and laughing at your confusion over the watering cardboard! It was you who taught me to do that and I’m about to try it for the first time this autumn! Love seeing your progress! 😍

Fighting with long weeds, Daves protein bites [or should I say mince bites😆] and the interrupting crows really cheered me up, just the tonic I needed, loved it xx

Haha! Those weeds were evil. And those cake things... my god they were just awful! Haha! I'm always yelling and talking to animals, Dave always takes the mick out of me for it, but I honestly dont notice I'm doing it half the time! xx

Just found your vlog Emma. Enjoyed watching it and laughed along with you! Just for interest, the cheapie polytunnels are called “blow-always” in the trade, so make sure you anchor it well! Like the toilet roll idea - I think ladies on an allotment should invest in a Shewee! I put a shed on my plot last summer and put a frontier stove in it - keep the stove burning whilst on the plot, kettle on the stove - perfect for a winter warm up! Liked and subbed! All the best, Martin.

Great advice Martin, thanks so much. Oh god, I haven’t been back to the plot this week because my daughters been unwell, I hope it’s still there!!! And with the storm coming this weekend I better get down there and properly anchor it down! Haha!

she is using to prevent weed growth and watering them make carboard box heavy so they don't fly and decompose quicker

Emma Bailey 😂 you should use them too on your plot to prevent weed growth and they also feed worms and you can add in your compost bin too.
@SmallGardenQuest
@SmallGardenQuest 4 года назад
Cardboard blocks light. No light no weeds. Water makes cardboard heavy. Heavy cardboard wont fly away when the wind blows. Also cardboard will feed the worms overtime :)
@oarfrost
@oarfrost 4 года назад
Plus, if you put the cardboard over the bramble stumps they will exhaust their roots and be a lot easier to dig up when our Emma gets time to actually clear the patch. But in the nicest possible way she is a bit of a know it all so we won't tell her that. We will wait until she is crippled with backache before we tell her how to make her life easier. She will thank us later

Hahaha! I am completely stubborn and no matter how many times someone tells me something, i always have to find out the hard way myself. I'm working on it Fred. I think I'll give it a whirl for the back of the plot as I'm only going to use the front half of the plot for growing this year. Any advice as to what to do with the enormous pile of dug up blackberry bushes and roots would be appreciated. Not sure if it will actually compost or not, there's so much of it! x
@oarfrost
@oarfrost 4 года назад
@@emmasallotmentdiaries Are you not allowed bonfires in the winter? If not, blackberry canes will eventually compost although they take their own sweet time about doing so. Anyway, keep the videos coming.

Yes thats what u do it stop weeds and eventually breaks down into compost. Its best to put leaves weeds branches broken / cut up also straw that's about a year old if u can get it at the bottom of raised beds ontop of the wet cardboard then top soil and compost

Hi Emma, I have just found your channel. I am really enjoying it. I am also a novice when it comes to gardening. We got our allotment last April and we did give it a go last growing season but we a 1yo it wasn't easy or possible to get there on regular basis..nevertheless it is a great experience. Google no dig method. The cardboard is to clear a growing area of weeds and she is watering it to keep the cardboard in place. I'm trying it in our plot this growing season. :)

Thank you, so glad you are enjoying my channel. I will be doing the no dig method on the bottom half of the plot I think, lots of people have recommended it. Good luck with this year at your plot! Let me know if you manage to get more planted. We can motivate each other! Hehe! x

We goo on a allotment last August still in the process of getting it ready for planting this spring. We're trying the no dig method you should look it up .see Charles Dowding on you tube. Well Worth a visit. Looks like you're allotment is partly geared up already all the best X Mandy x

I've had a little look at it, but I think it would make my plot unusable for a year and I was desperate to get growing on it asap. Think I'll try it for the back of the plot x

Watch “what vivi does next “ she does cardboard. It helps to cover and insulate the soil. It’s a type of mulch that can help with weed suppression.

Some people use no dig method ….., this often involved putting down cardboard , then wetting it . Then the growing medium is put on top , ..say , compost/manure / soil ,or combination . It reduces amount of weeding needed in future , and means soil ecosystem is nt disturbed , like it is with digging.
