The story starts with a conversation with World Bicycle Relief UK. We’re a fan of the way they manage to empower people in developing countries through cycling and the Buffalo Bike. They told us they have a team for Ride 100, at the end of July, riding to raise money towards World Bicycle Relief. And they asked if Emma would like to be part of the team! Emma was chuffed but wasn’t sure people would sponsor her to just ride her bike 100 miles, not much of a challenge for such an athlete. So she decided to take things to another level, by saying she’d do it on a buffalo bike!

I find myself really liking Emma all of a sudden. She’s not ashamed to possibly look less than awesome in a good cause. In the process, she looks more awesome than ever. I loved your comment at the end about never thinking about carrying capacity. To that I say, welcome to us cycling commuters. It takes an amazing rider to push that bike in that gearing up ANY hill. I would be pushing it all the way up. Keep up the great work at GCN!

Emma, what a fantastic challenge. I am sure that you will get through it with your usual good style and grace. What a great cause to be raising funds for and I hope that your bike has a tonne of oranges on the back, such a great bike which can do a lot of good. I did love how you tried to go through a typical GCN bike review... think that I know which is more of a practical bike.. buffalo wins every time! Great riding Emma and good luck on the ride. Very much look forward to seeing all the riders faces when you go past them riding that!!!

The bicycle equivalent of having a formula 1 driver race a produce truck ( green grocer lorry) in a local event. Glad to see a top tier rider have a bit of humility and be willing to ride at mere mortal speed to prove cycling isn't always about speed, it's about getting to ride. Great video!

It has a coaster brake as well as the caliper. I would not rely on the front wheel caliper brake. The caliper material looks like the standard low end flat press which flexes and is likely to shudder under moderate to heavy application.

Great challenge and a great bike too. I love the simplicity of single speeds. I have one also with a coaster brake. It looks so nice and clean. Perfect for short trips that I’d prefer not to walk.

The gearing looks too high even for its proper use. With larger loads on bumpy dirt roads, does GCN recommend a lower gear for this wonderful bike?

Actually the bent cross-bar ("top tube" to all you kids ) is great for carrying sacks while pushing the bike too. I like the back pedal hub brake. Guaranteed the front brake will be broken within a few weeks so the internal long lasting rear brake is doubly important where even replacing brake blocks is beyond the budget of some. Down side is you can't brake while pushing (or being pulled more like) a heavy load such as those sacks downhill. Good luck on your ride Emma! I hope many lives are improved by access to a good bike through your efforts!

Cyclesteffer so you can adjust the handlebar height for a wide variety of riders. These are ridden by everyone from young children to adults and only come in one size.

You forgot to mention how did you manage to bend that front fender. It is not bent in all of the scenes. I don't like the design, I like the idea, but I think there is room for much improvement. First sensible bike portrayed in GCN, nevertheless :)

I know how it is to climb a serious mountain a heavy bike.. In 2016, I and my mates cycled up the Sognefjell (www.quaeldich.de/paesse/sognefjellsveien/). I was using my Patria Terra (16,9kg) plus complete camping gear and food for multiple days... Luckily this bike has very low gearing...

Great work for a great cause. Why not let your viewers have an opportunity to participate more directly in the fun? I suggest GCN mobilize their legions of followers and sponsor a "Virtual" event similar to the Run For Kenya. In these type events, participants pay a modest fee to participate in a pre-defined distance (on any route of their choosing) on a pre-defined day. Afterward, the times are logged online. In return they get a nice (typically non-technical) tee shirt and with all proceeds going to charity (e.g. Buffalo Bike).With over 1 million followers and a bit of air time, who knows how much money could be raised.

The bicycle sharing needs have been grossly overestimated in China. There are possibly millions of bikes wasting away in their junk yards that could be for Africa. The Guardian states, "Shanghai currently has 1.5 million shared bikes on the streets, and despite its population being three times greater than London, that number far outstrips the 11,000 Santander Cycles peppered throughout the UK capital."
