Such a tribute to Nancy and James. Emmy is legendary in putting together simple but brilliant arrangements with anyone. Such powerful voices that Nancy would be moved. This is peerless.
"She walked through springtime when I was home, the days were sweet and the nights were warm," for me, this line encapsulates any true romantic love that I have experienced in my life..this is a great song..thank you so much for posting..
Emmylou has an in with God. As she ages she gets more beautiful and her voice does too. And she started off beautiful with a great voice. Possibly the greatest duet singer in the business. Don't mess with Emmylou unless you are prepared to go toe to toe with the Maker.
Geez God, I love this song! I'm sitting here on a cold, snowy pre-Halloween (!) night in CT, singing along with Emmylou and Dave, my Guild 12 string on my knee. Cudos to the extraordinary Nanci Griffitth (and James Hooker and Danny Flowers) for one of the most evocative, tender lyrics and melodies I've ever heard. For once, I wish I was a Texan. Just this once.
You lucky person. I'm sure it lifted your spirits. So happy to see this beautiful song is sung and appreciated so recently. Cheers from Oz. It's always a happy replay for me.
Please list everyone who was in that round. I saw it on ACL in the 90s. I recorded it but alas, it's gone after all these years. It was the first time I heard "Bartender". I cried through the whole thing.
Lyrics: Gulf Coast Highway He worked the rails He worked the rice fields With their cold dark wells... And when he dies he says he'll catch some blackbird's wing And he will fly away to heaven come some sweet blue bonnet spring she walked through springtime when I was home the days were sweet and our nights were warm the seasons change, and work will come the flowers fade and this old house felt so alone when the work took me away... This is the only place that bluebonnets grow Once a year they...
Nancy Griffith wrote this in collaboration with James Hooker and Danny Flowers. Her versions are absolutely incredible. Nanci and Emmylou are good friends. Emmylou was having a bad voice day. Wow.

I know that Dave Matthews became bigger than Emmylou ever dreamed of becoming, but I am sure that he's sitting there thinking, "I can't believe I'm doing a duet with Emmylou Harris."
@felixstoweblue , Yeah...wish somebody would post it. It's actually brilliant and my favorite version of a great song. Emmy, long a hero of mine reaching back to Gram Parsons, is losing her range with age. That's fine. Life happens.
It's that stupid Dave Matthews. Ugh. Well, I dunno. I do gotta hand it to him a bit. I tried playing Nanci's original with Mac MacAnally and couldn't stand it.
