EMOTIONAL REASONING - how to stop confusing feelings with facts - cognitive distortions psychology

WHAT IS EMOTIONAL REASONING? Sometimes we believe something false to be true, simply because it FEELS so true. Psychology calls this "emotional reasoning". Emotional reasoning is a cognitive process by which an individual concludes that their emotional reaction proves something is true, despite contrary evidence. Emotional reasoning can create an "emotional truth'" which may be in direct conflict with reality, causing us to experience the same negative feelings as if it really were true. This can contribute to stress, anxiety, and fear, and allow fact to start to blend with fiction. Today we will discuss this cognitive distortion, and look at how we can learn to question these irrational ideas, thoughts, and beliefs. I truly hope you find it healing and helpful!

I stumbled across your channel because I’ve been struggling with cognitive distortions that almost make me feel like my emotions are controlling me instead of the opposite. I can’t wait to delve into the rest of your videos and ideas on how to mitigate these mental health issues so many of us have. Your energy is great.. thank you! This is so good to remember! It is easy to fall into letting emotional reasoning take control. We need checks against it. The times when I usually struggle with it is when I'm spread thin or have too much going on in life. Yes! Asking questions of myself is what helps me too! Taking a moment to stop and tell myself to take some breaths and assess what is true in the moment can go a long way in helping! Thank you for your tips on dealing with emotional reasoning! It is where all of our blind spots show up! hehe

Yes, so true! It IS hard much of the time. But yes, taking deep breaths and remembering that emotions aren't always facts can help us learn to question these thoughts, especially when they are negative. I hope you are doing great!

Can I say how helpful this is. I have been diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder and I constantly look for worries and one has come to mind and I have distorted it and I have become overwhelmed with anxiety in the last few days

Interesting subject. This often sets off chainreactions in groups. If you work with people with cognitive disabilities, it is even harder to handle. Since its hard to explain and you have to meet the emotions and calm the situation down.

this makes sense to me. even if is just 2 ppl? its like anxiety hotcakes u keep passing back & forth. or; when we don’t know the answer we tell stories that we think are true. we feel something then look for every bit of “evidence” to support that untruth. we often create our own suffering. also doesn’t help if ppl around us say to trust your gut and intuition when its not that! it’s anxiety and fear, symptomatic of a problem not to be confused with intuition .

i saw a post that said @some of y’all thinking you’re empaths when really you’re traumatized” ppl got really angry at the post but there’s some truth to that. not every message is truth! we have to heal and be able to rationally check our own thinking

Become more Zen about life. Acknowledge your feelings but never stop questioning your perception. It took me decades to unravel my emotional pain growing up in a disfunctional family. The problems your parents have are not your problems. Stop the cycle with how you live your life and you can find happiness.
