I mean the haka is both a war dance and a ceremonial dance. I remember seeing a translated version of this same video and the actual words the men and women are saying at something to the affect of “don’t carry your burdens alone anymore, share them with us since you are joining our family” Plus the haka runs off of pure energy that humans have held onto since the beginning of our species that we should tap into a little more honestly. If traditions like this can affect us this much, why not conduct them more often and document it for others to see?

The name of the haka is Tika Tonu (translation, "What's right is always right.)" It is not a war or battle haka as so often mentioned in the comments. It usually used to mark a right of passage e.g. boyhood to adulthood, graduation or in this case a wedding. This haka is performed by the groom's side of the family welcoming the bride into their midst and expressing their unconditional support for the couple.

This Haka is called Tika Tonu. It is a Maori haka and was written in the Hawkes Bay, New Zealand in 1914 by a chief named Waimarama Puhara. He wrote it for his son and it is about the transition from boy to man.

Ive watched several Haka videos now, the absolute intensity of their expressions are incredible. After they finish, there must he a recovery period to adjust back to "normal". This takes your breathe away. All the videos have the exact same intensity and displays of emotion, from the young MP to this wedding ceremony. This couple will never forget that day. All their eyes express a "rage" that is scary. Especially the female participants

If I'm not mistaken, the Tika Tonu Haka is seen as a gift, from the family to the groom and the bride. And, basically, since it talks about being ready to face your adult life, when you join the Haka it does not only mean you're showing you're ready to face your life from now on, but youre returning the Haka as well, basically making a gift to your family. It's complicated, I know, but once I saw a video about this particular form of Haka and all this things was explained this way...I just hope I did not say anything wrong or stupid

Haka literally translates to breathing fire, ha = breath or exhaling ka = fire. Haka is to speak with intensity and purpose which can be used in a lot of different ways. It is often emphasised with action as well, sometimes without. While performed before wartime’s being apart of it, it can also be celebratory, supportive (haka tautoko) etc Haka is not one thing with one meaning, think of it more as a genre or conduit of expression. I have seen someone propose with Haka spontaneously composed on the spot. Haka is performed as loved ones are buried, as babies are welcomed into homes and in this case at a wedding. If you are interested in the origins of this specific Haka it is called Tika Tonu. A quick summary of its translation is a father telling his son that he has all the strength and resources within himself to overcome the obstacles he is facing in life now and in the future. If he is worried or concerned to look inside himself for the answers.

I'm sorry but some of these comments are a bit annoying, I'm from New Zealand and part Maori, I was raised in Maori culture to an extent not as much as I would've liked but the disrespectful comments that denounce our culture is pretty insulting, I know it's more lack of understanding but the Haka is tradition and I've grown up both watching the Haka and performing the Haka at celebrations, weddings etc You may not understand it but a little respect for another culture would be appreciated.

In fact, we have laws to protect it, and we spend a ton of white people's tax money to place Aboriginal symbolism all over the town, but the Aboriginals enjoy Subway sandwiches and alcohol too much to care. Turns out modern white man is the only ones trying to protect your own culture from yourselves abandoning it.

Areus White It really makes me sad, especially for the aboriginal people who are trying to spread their culture, when some aboriginals just don't care at all. I'd really like to see the Australian sports teams do the aboriginal war dances before games and for normal Aussies to do it at everyday celebrations like weddings, funerals and birthdays like Kiwis do with the Haka. It would help Australians understand the aboriginal culture and it could intimidate other teams and it would make the start of Australia New Zealand games absolutely mind blowing. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Well the haka was made by Te Rauparaha as a war cry when he fought against those which sought to destroy him, but since its a challenge and in honour of the opponent. Often telling a story such as the common ka mate of how maui slowed the sun. So they also use hakas at games, funerals and weddings.

+Jah Bless yeah I know I was just simplifying it for her...Te Rauparaha was a Maori chief , and he is said to have made the ka mate haka when a ton was destroyed by huge amounts of enemies , he managed to hide from them under dead bodies and when they were about to leave , he did the haka to scare and challenge them , showing he was a true Maui....also pakeha would only really know the ka mate haka , so I was just working on that basis that she didn't know other ones

I think watching videos of indigenous cultures performing their traditional rituals sparks something in all of us, something encoded in our DNA maybe, that calls us to remember our primal roots. For instance, I've never set foot in Scotland, but I'm Scots by ancestry, and every time I hear bagpipe music, it always feels to me like I'm getting homesick.

This is a celebration of a great culture of navigators, mariners and warriors, in many respects very much like the great culture of my ancestors, the Norsemen, they found their way to Greenland and Vinland, like the Maori found their way to almost the exact polar opposite of Scandinavia, New Zealand. The more I think about it the more our ancestral cultures look alike, while at the same time a world apart. Maybe one day a Viking can witness a Haka and celebrate two late Mediaeval cultures that still move their desendants to great pride of their cultural achievements, now I amgoing to watch this video again.

@RzzRBladezofoccham
@RzzRBladezofoccham 8 лет назад
Let me explain myself, I lived for years on a tropical Island in the caribean, and the people there have a hard time living, and you can name a thousand reasons, racist and non-racist alike. In the end there is but one reason, pride, we Europeans have been utterly effective in erasing everything that can bring any nation to feel pride in their ancestry, from the 1500s onwards we Europeans have systematically destroyed every legacy (and legacy should be read as ancestral guidance), from which these people could draw the strength to resist their enslavement. When you now look around the world, where Europeans can live with and are accepted by the native populations, you will discover that all these native cultures were capable of resisting the European cultural forces, but the people in the carribean have after 400 years of enslavement only managed to hold on to their music, they do not know where in Africa they originated, they have lost all connection to their ancestral tribes, some of which created vast kingdoms even before the Europeans came....... Or to say it New Zealand style, we have robbed them from the most basic means to determine their Identity, they can no longer say: "I am Gimli son of Gloin"
@matthewharbour6276
@matthewharbour6276 8 лет назад
+RzzRBladez I am not quite sure why you would feel the need to explain that. I do not want to assume anything o I am just asking why so I can better understand your point.
@RzzRBladezofoccham
@RzzRBladezofoccham 8 лет назад
Matthew Harbour Losing your culture, can only ever make a lesser man, or lesser woman. For years I have lived among people, good people, but with an unnatural inferiority complex, certainly towards Europeans like me, freeing them in 1864 has virtually changed nothing, their behaviour towards white people is as if they are still enslaved. And for some it means always being over-polite, but for others it turns to resentment. There is an unnatural unequality that makes working and living with these people really diificult, I felt like I always had to tip toe my way around. Like I said it is really difficult to explain, black people living in the USA have taken the culture of the USA as part of their culture and you see that they fare much better than most people on the islands, where the black population is often greater than 90%.You must understand that I never understood the importance of culture until I was confronted with a virtual lack of culture. At first, before I let my brain work, I got annoyed with these people, only later when I slowly got absorbed into their way of living I started to see the real damage done by the Europeans, I do not possess the means to describe exactly what I mean, I am a historian, not an anthropologist, but when you start trying to speak their language and when they open up to you you can start connecting the dots and then you can see that freeing the slaves in 1864, though the right thing to do, has been utterly incomplete and we do not have the means to ever make it complete. So when I compare the people I lived with to the Maori, I can both understand the dificulties, though not on a personal level, as that I can really appreciate them holding on to everthing they inherited from the ancestors, since I have seen first hand the abhorrent effects of slavery still affecting people to this day. People often step over culture as if it is meaningless, nothing can be further from the truth.........
