If you need a funny/uplifting movie to help dry your tears, I highly recommend "Death Becomes Her" with Bruce Willis, "The Birdcage" with Robin Williams, or "Too Wong Foo, thanks for everything! Julie Newmar" with Patrick Swayze & Wesley Snipes. Any one of those three comedic masterpieces will surely provide much needed laughter & you will NOT be disappointed, I promise! Also, if you want to watch the great Alan Rickman aka Severus Snape aka Hans Gruber in a funny role, check out "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves" (1991) with Kevin Costner & Morgan Freeman. Alan plays the Sheriff of Nottingham & literally steals the show from the main characters. The movie in general is a bit cheesy, but Alan is so over the top & simply hilarious!

Same here. One of the first things that brought me back to this channel, time and time again, was how open these guys are with their emotions. And I can relate to Oak to well because he's so empathetic himself, and he can put himself in these situations and understand where people are coming from. He genuinely connects to it. This was my first time watching a reaction to such an emotional and tragic movie, but it felt like the emotions were so much heavier because I was feeling all of their emotions too.

Oak and Quinn always give me a deeper sense of knowing. Like they *get* and understand the emotions in these movies on deeper levels and people who have went through some things in life can kinda identify and it makes us feel not alone.

You know one of the big reasons I like watching you guys? Because you arent afraid to cry. You're willing to cry on camera, at movies that have been deemed as chick flicks, or YA movies. Its refreshing to see grown men open to their feelings like this.

Hazel Grace was inspired by Esther Earl, a girl John Green met at a Harry Potter convention. She died in 2010 at 16. He dedicated the book to her.

Just wanted to add for anyone that doesn't know about her, she also published a book called "This Star Won't Go Out", which is also the name of the childhood cancer charity her parents started in her name. And Esther Day is celebrated every year on August 3rd by John and Hank Green over on their RU-vid channel vlogbrothers. It was her birthday, and at her request, it's a day to celebrate the love you have for your family and friends by making sure you tell them.

This movie never fails to make me cry, no matter how many times I rewatch it. The pre-funeral speech by Hazel, her finding out that he died, and then his eulogy for her at the end with that song are the parts that destroy me. This movie was so well made, so heartbreaking, the whole time you're worried about her dying and then for it to be him really takes you by surprise. They were so lucky to have found each other and to have loved each other. How he said "You don't get to choose if you get hurt by this world, but you do have a say in who hurts you", perfectly embodies them. One of my favorite movies.

I disagree. Manic pixie dream girls don't have depth of character, but with Augustus, we definitely explored his character quite a bit. He was not a one dimensional character whose sole purpose is to benefit the female protagonist.

🥺 I just wanna give Answer and Oak the biggest hugs. 🥺This was a hard movie to watch but an even harder book to read, even as a teenager who wasn't exposed to cancer or anybody with cancer. this movie's book's author, john green has just gotten another book made into a movie, and his brother, hank green, has a stand up show about his own experience with cancer (he had cancer last year). they are also the guys who made vidcon, crash course, complexly, sci show, etc

I've read three of Green's books (Fault in Our Stars, Looking for Alaska, and Paper Towns) and I don't think I'll read any more, because they're basically all the same; but have only seen the adaptation for Fault. 'Looking for Alaska' is my favorite of the books (also, the first one of his that I read), but I never got around to watch the miniseries. Is it worth the watch?

This movie BROKE me! I had cancer when I was 17 and it literally feels like you're seeing people from the view as if you died. People I knew at school who had never spoken to me came up to me and said things I didn't expect them to say. Humour is definitely a BIG crutch to lean on when you or someone you know is going through cancer 🙌🏻

I had cancer at 2 years old and then relapsed at 12 years old. It’s so awkward. People are super curious, but they’re also afraid to be insensitive and ask about it. I liked it when people asked, instead of assuming and just feeling sorry for me. It’s awesome to just have a regular conversation. I liked to joke all of the time. Humor and laughing is really important in hard times. 😊

A few important points about John Green! John Green is one of the OG RU-vidrs, sharing his channel with his brother, Hank Green. Their fans/community are called “Nerdfighters”. The story was inspired by his time working as a chaplain at a children’s hospital. Though he has said she isn’t Hazel Grace, John was friends with a Nerdfighter at the time he was publishing the Fault in Our Stars, a girl named Esther. Esther was a young woman with cancer. Before she passed, John asked her what they could do for her. She wanted everyone to tell the people they love “I love you” on her birthday, every year. Her parents later started This Star Won’t Go Out, a charity that helps with the financial struggles that come with childhood cancer. Esther Day is August 3rd, and everyone is invited to join in.

First of all, I apologize for my English. I had never heard of the book before. But I remember when the movie was released. At that time, my mother was receiving chemotherapy treatment. When I read the plot of the movie, all my suppressed emotions exploded and I cried for hours. I didn't have the courage to watch the movie. My mother's treatment was successful. She is very healthy now. After a while, I had the chance to watch the movie. And I was thankful once again.

Im so happy your mother is all healthy and doing well!. My experience reading this book is divided in before and after knowing how cancer affects. I read the book when I was 15, it hit as expected. when I was 19 my grandma got cancer, I can't imagine how terrifying it was for her, when I was already paralysed by fear, but she made it after a couple of years of really strong treatment. a year later, a v good friend passed away due to the same cancer Gus had, he didn't want any of our friends to know about it, and we got to know when it was too late. He left us messages and good wishes passed through his dad. when I dared to read the book again (it's been 4 years) it was similar to what you said, it was cathartic, especially for someone who tends to retain her emotions. Im thankful for the time I still have w my grandma, and I'm thankful for the time I had with my friend even if it was not that long, but it was worth it, every minute it lasted.

I highly recommend reacting to five feet apart kind of the same concept except it’s based around cystic fibrosis starring Haley Richardson and Cole spouse, and Justin Baldoni directed the movie some may know him as “Rafael” From Jane the virgin.

I was a sobbing MESS in the theaters, I went with my ex, and my best friend. To this day my best friend can’t help but cry laugh at the memory, because she said she was so sucked into the movie, but upon hearing my keening next to her snapped her out of it. She said I sounded like a dying cow 😭😂 I can’t help that I have big feelings 😂

John Green wrote this book in honor of his young friend Esther Grace Earl, who unfortunately passed from cancer in 2010 at age 16. She was an incredibly bright, kind, and loving soul who never let her illness dull her light! Her parents released a book around the time the movie came out that is a collection of her writing, diary entries etc and has a foreword written by John Green as well. It’s called “This Star Won’t Go Out (We Won’t Let it)” and Lori & Wayne have a non-profit with the same name that helps families of children with cancer. They’re lovely people 💜 Highly recommend reading Esther’s book although it will bring you to tears just as often as TFioS book and movie does it’s a really beautiful testament to love and resilience. August 3rd is Esther Day, where we honor her memory by reminding those we love that we love them 💜

You are not alone. I’m sending you a hug right now. I was 18 when my father passed away from stage four pancreatic cancer. Within 3 months of being diagnosed, he was gone. It will be 10 years in June. Spend as much time with him and cherish each day. Even when it’s painful. Even when it’s frustrating. Even when it feels unjust. Spend time with him because when he’s gone, regardless of how or when he goes, all you’ll have are memories. So make as many as possible.

I think what was so jarring about my experience with this story, is that it was so easy to be concerned for Hazel and her prognosis, that I was so completely shattered when it ends up being Gus who declines in the end. You aren't focused on him, even with knowing how cancer can work sometimes and how unpredictable remission can be, you just never expect it to be him. It just hits you like a train.

Thank you Answer and Oak for sharing your personal stories! I know it's not mandatory to do so, especially to a large public; so, thank you for letting us in, and I'm sorry for your losses❤ I lost my aunt in 2016 to sudden stage 4 cancer when I was 24. She had lived with us for 10 yrs from the time I was 10 to 20, so she was like a 2nd mom to me with no children of her own. Towards the end, she couldn't say much, but she would light up every time I walked in the room. She only wanted to see my mom and myself at that point, which was difficult seeing her like that, but I just put on a brave face for her sake and made her chuckle whenever I could. I was determined to read a eulogy at her funeral, and I got about halfway before I lost it but powered through. I wanted everyone to know what a kind, special person she was and how grateful I was/am for the impact she had on my life.

I remember my 16 years-old self reading this book in one sitting back in 2012 and just bawling my eyes out for hours during and after it so I totally understand Oak's reaction through the movie🤧🤧 Also during Tumblr-being-popular times, there was this rumor about her dying after the book ended and as a teenager, I totally believed it and it hurt even more 🤧🤧

John Green wrote this book and not all that long ago his brother (Hank Green) had a cancer diagnosis, but thankfully is in remission 3 months after he found out. This happened late in 2023 and he announced he was in remission around August. When all that happened, I couldn't imagine what was going through John's head after writing this book.

The chokehold this book had on my middle could not be understated. 12 year old me, of course, also read it and the line that really stuck with me was when Augustus tells Hazel that he lit up like a Christmas tree, the visual of that as I read it in the dark of my room was just so clear it gutted me. And it wasn't any better that after the movie was released my mother was diagnosed with an aggressive variant of breast cancer. That she didn't tell my siblings or I about how serious the diagnosis was and that she was actually partaking in an experimental procedure until we were in our twenties. Which caused another flood of emotions, i knew my mom was suffering but i didn't know just how uncertain her survival was. I think as a child i accepted " My mom survived because of course she would" but now being twenty with this new information and now it was "My mom survived but she easily couldn't have" and maybe that is a thought i always had but only now did i allow that thought to really sit in my head and it was chilling.

I have a story about this movie. When I saw it, I was with a friend in a summer house, and it just hit me really hard. I felt this emptiness inside. I left my friend back in the house and rode my motorcycle until I found a street bench surrounded with absolute silence and darkness and I sat there. Only the stars lit up the sky. I felt this intense desire to scream. To break the deafening silence, the emptiness. And I did multiple times. There was an pain in my gut that I wanted to let out. I actually lost my voice for two days after this and my friend didn't understand how that happened. I think the subject is such a difficult one to watch. The fact that the universe is indifferent to us. That we and everything we stood for in our lives eventually will disappear and everyone will forget about us. All we have is our time here, and even that is not on our terms. It's a lucky draw. The existential dread of that realization is the hardest part to swallow. Especially, when portrayed by kids who have so much potential and it just dies with them. I thought I was alone thinking that this romantic movie just hit me personally for some reason I can't explain, but seeing your guys' reaction made me reevaluate how strong this movie and its message are.

I have not stumbled upon any other reactions to this film. I read the book and was moved. Watched the movie and seeing the story come to life floored me and I am not ashamed to say reduced me to tears. It happened watching you watch it. Thank you for sharing your experiences about the film and with the illness. Over the ten year period between 2009 and 2019 every member of my family of origin died. Father and brother to cancer, one sister to a sudden illness, one sister from heart failure and my mother to dementia. I am the last man standing, as my brother told me from his hospice bed. Humor was absolutely sanity saving for me and them as well. The weight was crushing. I took my father to the local cancer research center for his treatments. One day we were sitting at the intake desk and we started bantering back and forth. She asked him if he had a health care proxy to make decisions for him. He told her I could be it. I said "Are you sure? We have a history. I might tell them to unplug you for a runny nose." The attending nurse started laughing and thanked us, saying she rarely got to laugh there. Imagine how it must be for those who work with those with catastrophic illness. My father and my brother kept their senses of humor about the absolute absurdity of everything and we ribbed each other right up until the end. I am grateful for those memories.

I remember reading this book while at a co-op placement in high school. I was in the break room sobbing while telling the staff it was a great book 😅. And the movie stuck very closely to the book and i saw it opening night in theatres and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house!

The author of this book has had a few of his other works made into films as well. Paper Towns is another movie, that has the actor who played Isaac as the main character. There is one that just came out on HBO Max exclusively called Turtles All the Way Down that explores the experience of living with OCD. It was phenomenal- and I think is important in terms of representation (John Green has OCD himself). Most of his works tend to be coming of age stories

This film destroys me each time I watch it, and I’m so glad it exists. Hazel’s eulogy she read to Gus for his pre-funeral and Shailene’s performance of it, is such a lesson on how to accept life on life’s terms. Sometimes we have to live moment to moment because we’re aware there may never be another moment for us or someone we love. (“Powder” is another example of a powerful film with life messages.) Thank you for sharing the pain of your past and your fears for an uncertain future. I can’t tell you enough how grateful I am that y’all shared your hearts with us. Mr. The Oak, I know you live in a huge macho world and I’m just an old short gay guy. But I wish I could give you the biggest open-palmed hug. It’s a greatness you have… the size of your heart and how much it is filled with your son and still you leave room for others. ALL of you are amazing men. Please know that we recognize this. First of all: thanks for being so open. I remember reading this book, just being heartbroken about it and also very angry at the ending. I watched the movie in the cinema and everyone was crying. My father got cancer later on, and eventually passed away in 2021. Slowly I'm being able to watch movies (and read books) again about characters with cancer. I really love the balance of seriousness and humor. Even in the last days of my father's life, he was still trying to lighten the mood. It's just how people deal. And I've learned along the way that everyone has different ways of dealing with dying, death and grief and that that's okay. I just have so much respect for John Green for writing this book, and for everyone who worked on this movie. Sometimes adaptions turn out to be disappointing, but this one was really really well done. (also, as a Dutchie I was really proud to see a book/movie be partly set in the Netherlands)

I got my box of tissues ready. This beautiful film came out the same year that Insurgent came out (that’s why she cuts her hair at the beginning of the movie). I have always said that the love relationship in this film and in the book is beyond words. Shailene and Ansel were the perfect people to bring this work to life. There are a LOT of people who do not like this book or the film. Myself, being a Leukemia patient who is now in remission, I will never understand how or why anyone would have negative thoughts towards what is such a raw story of true love.

I wish so badly I could have eulogized my grandfather. My dad broke down in the middle of a story he was telling at his funeral. I was pregnant at the time at the start of my third trimester. I knew the end of the story and wanted so badly to finish it but I knew with all my emotions being so amplified I couldn't bring myself to say a word. It broke my heart because he was such an amazing man and no one else spoke. Someone should have spoken. I wish I could have spoken.

About like two years after i beat cancer i went to the cinema for a first date …..we watched the fault in our stars …..needless to say it was our first date i didn‘t really know them and i cried soooooo bad xD …..after calming down and talk to them it turns out they beat cancer too xD

This is why your channel is my favorite. Can't help but compare, other reactors are like speedrunning through the movie and are just doing it for vires but you're the only channel that really digs deeper into the story, not embarassed to admit a movie moved you, Oak being a Potterhead will always be one of the highlights of this channel for me. I showed this movie in the past year to my now 16yo daughter. Shortly after we watched it, her friend was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma (about 2 weeks after their grade 9 graduation). They had known each other since kindergarten. Though she fought bravely, her friend lost her battle, and we just attended her celebration of life this past weekend. She had actually planned it with her parents- down to the last detail. She wanted a big party for her friends after she was gone, as any teenager would, and boy was it ever beautiful. No parent should lose their child. And their only child at that. No one should die from cancer, especially one so young. But did she ever live her life in the face of her own mortality, more fiercely and beautifully than I could ever imagine. My daughter will remember her friend forever, and this movie will be irrevocably tied to this time in her life now, in a way neither of us could have predicted a year ago.

I like that you noticed the swing set being gone, most reactioners don’t 😁 it’s a little cut plot line from the book where they sell the “Lonely, Vaguely Pedophilic Swing Set.” Also I love this adaptation, one of the best and most accurate I’ve ever seen, but I’ll still never forgive them for changing the final line “I do, Augustus. I do” from the book just to play up the “Okay” one more time.

I love this movie so much but it’s a hard, emotional watch. I’m really glad you guys did check it out. John Green is my favourite author. The book The Fault In Our Stars is as beautiful as it is heartbreaking. It took me a while to read it because I couldn’t see the words on the page through my tears. The film adapted the book just perfectly. I cry every time I watch it. I feel like John Green is a genius because it’s like he is Peter Van Houten (but a way nicer guy & better writer) Hazel says no one has ever described what it means to be dying of cancer like the author of her favourite book. Well, for me no one has captured what it means to watch a loved one go through cancer like my favourite author. The hard moments, the scary moments, the funny moments, the every day life, the love, the pain. He captures what I can’t even imagine it feels like to be dying of cancer… but also what it means to be living with cancer. Not just those affected with the disease but their family, friends, support groups etc.

In the book, Hazel and Gus put the swingset on craigslist for free and gave it to a gentleman with two young sons he wanted to get to play outside more. Thats why its missing near the end of the movie.

My mother and sister read the book and I remember my mom barging into my sisters room just sobbing and yelling at her saying “WHY DID YOU MAKE ME READ THIS!?” My sister cried when reading it too and because of them being so loud they spoiled the entire book for me lol. Then we heard there was gonna be a movie and we were highly anticipating it, we somehow managed to get to a early special showing and we were given little brackets and posters. The entire place was packed and the majority were couples and I will never forget that experience for many reasons, it wasn’t en ordinary movie theater trip. Everyone was so quiet even though it was packed, no one spoke or got up to use the bathroom and I curled up on my chair to try and cover my face with my knees because I was ugly crying and I looked around me and so was everyone else. That’s when the silence broke, I no one could stop crying and there was a guy who yelled “BRO COME ON” when she said augustus died and the dudes voice was cracking so much you could tell he was ugly crying too. It was an interesting experience I have never seen so many people crying so hard like that in one place, you could hear people crying and doing the gasping for air and hyperventilating. I’m the master at not crying in front of people, if I watch stuff alone I could cry for the tiniest things but if someone is there no matter how close I am to them I won’t cry, its like the only interesting skill I have. I was confident I wouldn’t cry since I already knew the story and felt it once and cried it out and I thought I had no tears left for this story but apparently I had an entire oceans worth.

I feel like Answer may have been hit by the phrase in the movie where "I wish I could say Augusta kept his humor till the end" We all want our loved ones to look like they fought a fantastic battle with cancer. But we all know they didn't. They couldnt. Death is painful and awful and traumatic. But we all find the humor, and we all find the passion, but we all feel the pain. And that's the beauty of this movie.

I don't know if anyone said that, but unfortunately the book Hazel and Augustus were talking about doesn't exist. It was the first thing I tried to find out because it felt so real to me and I actually believed that this is a book I can read too. I just realized the movie came out when I was 17 and I already read the book before. Both Versions of the story had a certain effect on my heart and my perspective on the world I was living in. Now I'm 27 and all the feelings got threw me again. I cried and laughed at the same scenes like you guys did. Mr. John Green is a great author. His book changed me and in one way he saved my life. This story has a special place in my heart. So thank you for bringing up this memory to me again by reacting to this heartbreaking and beautiful movie!

Why I really love you guys is that not only are you entertaining and funny, you also know when things are meant to be watched earnestly and not just mindlessly and you're willing to be openly vulnerable. Well you guys did not disappoint. This movie is a ride that you never knew you wanted to go on but I knew you would like it. Like I said in my other comment this is my husband’s favorite movie and I think it is partly because his family lost his nephew at 6 to leukemia. They are a family who deals with pain through tears and humor and it is so relatable when you have experienced it.
