Empathy Through Film | The Master Video Essay

you like The Master (2012)? i think I failed to convey one point. While Lancaster Dodd is an abuser there is still a palpable connection between Freddie and Lancaster that needs to be addressed. Dodd is a sympathetic character and throughout the film one can't help but hope him and Freddie can work it out. When Freddie realizes he needs to "break up" with Lancaster it is a very touching and moving scene for that reason (the first and second time). To paint Lancaster solely as a terrible person would be a disservice to the film. I think its important to recognize the value this relationship had to both Freddie and Lancaster despite the points I discuss in this video.
i misused the word subtext and I apologize.
Paul Thomas Anderson with the help of Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams created one of my favorite films in 2012. This video essay talks The Master (2012). How does it deal with community, power and most importantly Freddie.

I finished watching this and went to, I assumed, add to a mountain of likes. That this only has 395 views is absurd to me. I'll comfortably call this video essay wildly intelligent and beautiful. Thanks for helping me with my understanding of the film and for taking your time to share your knowledge! Great stuff

That's a great undersranding of what "The Master" is about. Of course, like you said, "The Master" has many themes in it, but by the end of the film it is about Freddy Kuell. That was definitely missed on me the first, and only time I saw the film. I had a cynical look on the film. I thought it was trying to say how all people are messed up and can't change for the better. That take on it was probably more a reflection of my own perspective on my own life at the time than an accurate understanding of "The Master." Glad to get another perspective on the film. Thanks.

This was so so beautiful man. At the end of the video, I literally said ‘wow’. Its such a great feeling when you find someone who felt the same way as I felt about, understood the same way as I understood and loved the same way as I loved this often misunderstood, polarising, underrated masterpiece. I think thats what a sense of community and belonging is.

Fantastic essay, can't wait to watch more of your vids! I did have a thought though, you say at one point that Freddie accidentally kills his co worker. I don't think it's a mishap, right after he gives him the drink he says "You remind me of my father", later on when Dodd's processing him, we find out his dad died from alcohol poisoning, and when asked if the drink kills he says "Not if you drink it responsibly", but when he gives it to the guy he tells him "all in one gulp". I think he was trying to kill him or at least hurt him, maybe stemming from his trauma as a child, who knows.

Has anyone noticed the part where he is singing A Roving and then people are suddenly naked like Amy Adams is sitting there and then she is suddenly naked sitting the same way, I feel like it’s just apart of Freddie’s imagination also the part where Freddie is sleeping in the movie theater and then gets a phone call delivered to him and it’s like it is a dream. I think Freddie is a little delusional and a lost cause. There is so much to take from this film it’s amazing. It’s one of my favorite movies and stories ever. Freddie Quell is one of the most striking characters I’ve ever known and Phoenix plays him so incredibly well it’s what made me absolutely love Joaquin Phoenix, it’s a performance of a lifetime to me. I think that Dodd loves Freddie so much because this man believes in him so much, it is a bit of a love story but no a homosexual one, not for me

@@K4tsur4giYou know what is terrible? 😅 To react with a simplistic wannabe judgment to a comment that at least pinpoints one other major topic that should be discussed in the video, since it's an important part of the Freddie personality: looking for a father figure that is "giant" enough to be able to help us better understand the world, which will be only as successful as we knowing ourselves... You could just leave your comment as an original post and proby nobody would react. 😊

@@K4tsur4gi but if anything, judging others based on ONE of their favourite films (plus a few lines of commentary) is more troubling than you would think. Sadly much of the Homo sapiens forms their worldviews based on such "firm grounds".

A lot of people seem to miss that Dodd is portrayed purposefully as a fool most of the time, to the audience. In fact, he is so self-deluded that he comes off as the 'animal' moreso than Freddy, who just is. Freddy fulfills a need in Dodd's life that is otherwise absent. The scene with Freddy and Winn in bed is important. It shows how Freddy has taken something from Dodd's teachings, but left behind all the bullshit. He appropriates Dodd's mindgame and uses (subconsciously) it as a way to find a deeper connection to Winn. Freddy doesn't need to "return his mind to perfection", he just needs love and connection, and he takes what he learned from Dodd (NOT what Dodd was teaching him) and applies it in order to get what he needs. I hate to say this but it's almost as if Freddy has become his own Master. ugh. sorry.

Joaquin's best performance in my opinion. And one of PS Hoffman's best. This movie is so much more than the Joker. And yet the Joker has really high ratings, while the Master is underrated. Everything from sub-text to film-making wise is far superior to the Joker. I really believe that the Joker will not date well. But The Master will be more appreciated as the years pass.

Damn Brother! Rather fortuitously, I happen to be reading 'No One Cares About Crazy People', by Ron Powers, and the theme of your very solid and insightful review of this modern classic goes well with much of what the Pulitzer Prize winning author had to say in his book. I can't recommend it any higher. There is also a mention of the movie the US gov outlawed that you mention in this piece. Just subscribed, you saw a lot of stuff in this movie that I missed. RIP PSH.

@marcogianesello6083
@marcogianesello6083 11 месяцев назад
how did it make no sense? It's not even abstract or surreal, it's pretty much all linear. Essentially you can't pin it down to some two sentence slogan that explains what it's supposed to mean or be about and that means it make no sense? And so clearly whoever gets something out of it is just lying? Maybe if that wasn't your attitude you'd get more out of complex films like this

Why all the senseless female nudity? It felt so exploitive. Are movies made with female fans being considered at all?

the film is from Freddie’s perspective in a way. and he’s a sex addict
@maxwellcouturefilms
@maxwellcouturefilms Год назад
While I respect your opinion and reaction to the film I’d like to explain what I think the film was trying to accomplish. The film is about Freddie who is a weird pervert. Notice the tracking shot of the Martha the salesgirl. We are following Freddie’s eyes and what he desires. The scene where everyone is dancing nude is clearly from Freddie’s perspective as well. The naked sand lady clearly establishes Freddie’s animalistic sexual drive from the beginning. In a film largely about quelling and giving into baser instincts I think it would be worse to have no nudity. But I respect your reaction despite the fact that I don’t think the nudity is “senseless”
@leafyishereisdumbnameakath4259
@bethg.5611 It's meant to show hes a weird pervert but if you still don't like it, I understand. If you want a movie that only has male nudity but no female nudity then watch Creep 2. I definitely get where you're coming from. I thought it was weird too as a man
