Empathy Vs. Compassion & The End Of Burnout (w/Simon Brown) 

I’m feeling this right now. Our hospital is a mess. The poor people to you if they’ve never worked before and now we have an assigned patient in the emergency department who don’t actually have an MRP. These patients gets all pissy because they’re not being seen by a doctor and the nurses are overloaded and working in a unit that they’ve never been before. Had a whole way patient I was trying to help get cleaned up because he had peed his pants and he was complaining at me the whole time and making demands and just being overall miserable. Normally I can handle this. I understand these people are having the worst days of their life and the situation is terrible right now, but I just lost it. I looked right at him and said” if you would quit bitching at me, it would be easier for me to help you”. It was not my proudest moment, but I’ve just had it. I’ve had it with management that keeps putting us in dangerous situation’s. I’ve had it with patients who take out their frustrations on front line workers who are just trying to help. I’ve had it.

Here is a wonderful definition of compassion I learned for myself from The Anand Mehrotra. He translates it in a way I embraced. Simply said...Coming with passion. People often misuse the word compassion by feeling sorry for others and situations which can often seem demeaning to those being served perhaps. Just another way to look at it. I will try to find the video of an interview he did with a photo journalist doing a mini documentary.
