Emperor Norton - America’s Only Emperor 

When Norton was in the asylum, his doctor asked him why he believed he was Emperor of the US and Protector of Mexico. Norton replied with ease, "Because God told me I was." A voice from the next cell said: "No I Didn't!"

Hail Norton. He was the first to plan a bridge from San Francisco through treasure island to Oakland. And they thought he was crazy.. and today a group of people are trying the bay bridge renamed after Norton. O Molly's bar next visit it a short distance from the cemetery for some great history.

Paris removed those locks because it was weighting down and threatening to collapse the bridge they were on! It's in a Justin Scarred vid.

Author Christopher Moore has a series of of vampire books set in San Francisco and one of the characters is a homeless man called the emperor who has two dogs, Bummer and Lazarus. The books are hilarious. The titles are You Suck, Bite Me, Bloodsucking Fiends, A Dirty Job and Secondhand Souls.

should add "so far" to that title, as always, neat content! Atlanta had some of those self cleaning public privies for a while, dunno what happened, but all gone now. In all fairness to the French, the weight of the locks there was compromising the bridge...locks removed to save the bridge. Sad but true. A fence on a wharf is a better choice. Still can remove the locks of love with the bolt cutters of break up...

In the Redwood Park segment, you're standing directly across Clay Street from the former site of the editorial offices of the Daily Evening Bulletin, where Joshua Norton hand-delivered his Proclamation declaring himself Emperor on 17 September 1859. The Lord's Prayer story probably is one of the many apocryphal tales about the Emperor - there doesn't appear to be any documentation for it. But, the Emperor did issue many Proclamations insisting on fair treatment, expanded legal rights and an end to violence against the Chinese. And, in April 1878, multiple newspapers reported that the Emperor stood up at a large sand-lot meeting led by the anti-Chinese demagogue Denis Kearney and directly challenged Kearny's authority. Seriously, I do. 👍 In Star Trek, Starfleet Headquarters is supposed to be in San Francisco; we've seen The Golden Gate Bridge in scenes that took place there in the classic Star Trek films.

There is an author named Christopher Moore who has a number of books set in and around San Francisco and a fictionalized version of the emperor bummer and Lazarus all future as minor characters throughout the books they're very good. Once I saw you were doing videos in San Francisco I was hoping you'd mentioned them as more people need to know about them and how cool they were
