Scorpions are incredibly cool. The emperor scorpion (Pandinus imperator) is not only one of the largest scorpions, but also one of the most common pet scorpions. But is it a good pet scorpion? And is it the best pet invertebrate for you?

True story! I’ve always heard, “The bigger the claws, the smaller the sting...”. I didn’t think much of it until I lived in AZ. I was stung by a bark scorpion on two separate occasions. The first wasn’t bad, like a minor bee sting. The second...I thought I was dying. I don’t know why it happened that way, though...

My first scorpion was an emperor named Risk. He was my first exotic and the reason I became obsessed with scorpions. I loved him, he had such a personality. He died last year, sadly, but he is still with me. I casted him in resin and now he is a reminded of what started it all with my love and hobby with scorpions and others like reptiles.

As a former owner of an emperor scorpion, I concur. I used my scorpion for educational purposes at a children's program and she was such a patient animal to sit for hours as little fingers touched her under supervision. At home I let her free roam occasionally and she'd run to me and lean into me and chill for hours as we watched TV.

@Rokaize 3 года назад
Which ones? Most have like 8 eyes. The two big ones on the top are for looking upward. They have (usually) 3 on each side of their “face”. Which is what they use to see in front of them. Even with all these eyes, their eyesight sucks. They can only really disguising between shadows and light. They rely on their sensitive hairs to feel what’s around them.

Hey Clint, I love these guides. They're very informative and your energy is infectious. But if I can make one suggestion could I recommend that when you talk about temperatures inside the home could you please give a range of approximate temperatures? When you say "if the house gets extremely cold" I don't really know what that means. I live in a northern climate and so during the winter it really isn't uncommon for my house to be in the low sixties to even the mid fifties of degrees, (fahrenheit). To someone like me "extremely cold" means literally freezing or just a little above, now logically I know that temperatures like those are way too cold for most animals but it would be nice to have a more solid idea of what "hot" and "cold" are.

I can also say from years of scorpion collecting that heat is more dangerous for scorps than coldness! I hate to see them in pet shops with heat lamps over their cages. I always buy them to save them and try to educate the pet shop. Important life lesson: wives generally don't like when you own over 50 live scorpion specimens!!!!!!

Everywhere I read everyone puts the heat pad under the enclosure. But it makes more sense to install the heat mat on the side. Or a heat emitter (not heat bulb!) on top.

What's with all the hate of cats? My family currently has 2 dogs, 2 cats and coming soon a Hognose and Bullsnake (Our 15yr old daughter and I are the snake fans, there is no way my wife or other daughter would allow Arachnids in the house. Although they do follow the house rule that no spider is to die when found, call me or the other daughter and we catch it and release it outside.)

It seems that the Asian Forrest Scorpions are getting more popular. I haven’t seen any Emperor Scorpions for sale lately, so I bought a Asian. You’re right about their little attitude!!! I’ve held mine a few times without incident. You just have to be careful!!! It’s pretty calm when I’m handling it. It just walks around from hand, to hand. Coaxing onto your hand is the biggest challenge, as it want to turn around and attack the paintbrush I use to coax it!!! Great alternative to an Emperor, if you can’t find one.

I'll have to further research it but here in Florida we have a "relatively harmless" scorpion called the Leatherback scorpion. They are large and black, and wide. They are not that aggressive and their venom is not that bad unless you are allergic to bee, wasps, and spiders. I think due to their nature that it lead to them being over harvested and sold, severely diminishing their numbers resulting in regulation of the species and I believe it is no longer legal to sell them or keep them as pets. I have seen them in the wild around my house and they can get to be about the size of a small rat. Again, I am going off information that I got about 25 years ago when I was still in school so things may have changed since then. I do know that the Florida Green Tree frog is now protected for the same reasons as above.

I had these guys as pets for most of my teenage years and they are awesome pets. Very laid back and inoffensive. Even with imports becoming available again, I would still encourage those interested in this species to go captive bred. The wild populations in their native range have been pretty badly impacted in years past by over-collection, and the REALLY big specimens that pop up in pet stores may actually be close to the end of their life spans, as I found out the hard way. Captive breeding of this species may be a bit more expensive, but it is an infinitely more sustainable way to make sure the demands for this species is being met, and that you’re getting an animal that isn’t riddled with parasites, stressed to the point of death from transit, near the end of its natural lifespan, or all of the above.

I have been keeping scorps for many years. I love them! Someone has to love them, eh? I can attest that their claws hurt more than their sting, generally speaking. Many don't realize but scorpions can sting, pinch, or bite. Beautiful creatures. Just another example of Mother Nature's perfection.

Lol, Clint is totally flexing that variegated monstera deliciosa he picked up. 😂 I have wanted an Emperor for like 25 years. I did once have a desert scorpion, and he was a really easy, low maintenance pet. On feeding day, I would wait until after dark, turn on the blacklight, and watch him hunt down his crickets. So cool to observe. Considering how entertaining it was to see him hunting, I might actually like a Forest Scorpion better with their more aggressive feeding response, since I consider scorpions a "looking" pet, not a "touching" pet.

You should do Arizona Bark Scorpions. I've cared for them before and they are pretty rad little boogers to keep around if your enclosure is secure. If you want the hardiest little invert available, enjoy keeping a social creature, and like the idea of keeping North America's most dangerous scorpion, they might be the best pet invertebrate for you...

I love your invertebrates video. I grew up keeping different bugs and stuff I found as pets. Everything from beetle to black widows. One of my favorites was the velvet ant, which I would love to see a video on. They are like the black widow in that most people would be scared to keep them because of their venom but the are rather docile unless you crush it and come in all kinds of pattern and colors.

Slowly getting the equipment together to get mine, Wanted one for years. Great video! Thank you for the info differentiating the Asian Forest Scorpion and the Emperor. This distinction has been an issue in the pet trade, particularly trade shows in my area lately. I can feel more confident when I make my purchase now.
