This is the best interview with Luke Steele I've seen. He's a very committed and complex artist who at times"checks out" on camera to reflect introspectively. He thinks of music as a visible structure and this sometimes makes him seem not connected to his interviewer. Actually, he's just trying to organize his thoughts in ways we will understand his approach to his creative processes. Thanks for your interview. Luke obviously connected with you and felt he could open up about many aspects of his status as a performing artist. I feel for him being stretched between work and family, but that's life! Sending good thoughts to his wife to have patience and trust.
FANTASTIC interview!! Luke dropping truth-bombs, showing just how much is "behind the curtain" or the image...which is SUBSTANCE! The drive to always elevate your art. Just toss out some angsty or angry lyrics, use a woman dressed in as little as possible, and you're making art you can suffer to and buy yourself a hit...without having to worry about...oh yeah...SUBSTANCE & BEING AN ARTIST! I'V always thought his being such a devoted, passionate surfer-not to mention family man-is what keeps his head open, but grounded.
Things are about to get even more hectic. It's great to see them headlining Coachella and hope that their music reaches a whole new group of people. I first came across Empire of The Sun when all they had was one song and a band page on MySpace with a couple of hundred friends. As I had liked the MGMT page, Empire Of The Sun came up as a suggestion due to the similar genre. As soon as I heard 'Waling On A Dream' I could tell these guys were onto a winning formula. I've been lucky enough to see them live 3 times now without a doubt they set the bar high for what an artist is/should be. I hope he can manage the stresses and continue to make good music!
Luke's music is transcendental, full stop. He is an artist, a vehicle for art, not a money making machine. What's not to love about him? Plus as a woman, I wouldn't say he's really good looking but he has undefinable charisma, star quality I guess, so many truths coming out of his beautiful lips
Good Stuff. I appreciate the nod to the songs going deeper as they progress. That is not an accident and a testament to the labor of song production. Going deeper from the reef is appreciated and noted in many of these travel stories. The subtle nuances of just a few notes, moments before the precipice of the verse signifies that you belong in the group of artists you admire, and most certainly admire you in reciprocity.
