This is great content. Some recruitment and interview prep 'experts' have managed to convince their 'followers' of various myths that you are debunking. Keep it coming :)
It is a very challenging calling let me tell you LOL I find it very hard to not call people out ;) I'm glad you're finding value! I hate the snake oil salesmen trying to convince people that recruiting is more complicated than it really is. :) thanks so much for watching!
This is great! I get so many messages where people ask me to refer them to a job. I mean... a little conversation, introduction, maybe mention app that you’ve worked on would be nice. A message, yo I can’t find a job can you help me, won’t get you anywhere! Thank you for the video
The issue is with internal recruitment. I think some of the positions advertised get priority consideration if you are an internal worker. They may be considered before an outsider.I have seen that several times.
Couple of thoughts on that - most companies do NOT have their recruiters working on internal transfers. Those (in a lot of places) are handled directly by the HM and prospective transfer, with someone from HR or an employee relations team handling the paperwork. Secondly, if we do NOT have an internal transfer process / give internal candidates opportunities, they'll leave. So it's a retention play as well as providing an opportunity for growth for our employees. I can honestly say for the roles I recruit for, internal transfers are a very small percentage of our incoming hires.
Hi Amy, my situation is a bit different...I was referred by an employee that was fired recently. We were both to get 1000 each after I work there for 90 days. Now they won't give me this incentive. This does not seem fare. I was counting on this. They didn't even say anything until I asked
Ok, so if I don't have any friends in my favourite company, and I want someone to refer me. So, what should I do ? I might find someone on LinkedIn, but then what ? Should I send them my qualifications or projects or something ? You said that the employee who is referring should've worked with you at some point. But, not having any work partner in that company means no one can refer me. So, what are we supposed to do to get a referral ? Does this mean, no friends = no referral ?
hi Sarthak - lots to discuss here - maybe I should write a follow up blog post :) So the first question - what does a referral DO for you? As I mention in the video, it CAN help you get noticed faster, but you still need to be qualified for the role. No getting around those pesky Basic Qualifications. The referring employee doesn't necessarily have to be a former co-worker - could be someone you went to school with, a friend or neighbor, someone you've connected with on LinkedIn and spoken to once or twice... the actual relationship isn't really the point - the idea is the referring employee is able to speak on your behalf. This could be as simple as "I don't know Sarthak but we attended the same college so I believe he's smart" OR "I worked with Sarthak every day for 3 yrs". Or anything in between. I do believe in the value of NETWORKING - if you haven't already get my networking templates (send an email to amy@recruitinginyogapants.com with "networking" in the subject line)
@@AmyMiller I get what you're saying. I'll make sure that I have the basic qualifications. But, does a recruiter call a referral candidate for an interview before the others ? I mean, are referral candidates given higher priority than non- referral candidates ?
Not necessarily - I try to call people in the order I review/determine their fit. Now - if someone is INTERESTED (they've applied directly or the referring employee is vouching for them / confirms their interest) then yes I'll call them first. I would rather talk to people I know want to hear from me.
Great Video but there's still nepotism in the recruitment process that takes place. One occasion, when I was in charge of a laboratory , I was told by the G.M to take on this 17 year old girl. I voiced my concerns that the work for a lab tech would include working weekends and Nights on a solo shift, from which anyone under the age of 18 cannot work on their own for legal reason. I was informed that the girl was the Senior Production Manager daughter. I found out that she didn't pass her 16 plus exams which covered basic sciences but I had no say on the matter. This developed a bad morale in the team since they want to circumvent the recruitment process.
Do not mess up typing do not use a tiny cellphone scree use a Computer! My daughter worked there for almost 4 years I the mom filled out the application on a laptop that this application made me keep getting a code from cell phone. I finished process I filled in my daughter’s information which is the same last name as mine for the REFERRAL program of $500 during January of 2022 then the have changed the dollar amount to $125. I get hired 6 months later we get nothing. Talk to HR they claim it was filled out wrong but the HR employee said in her concern they sent a email back but never sent a Snapshot to her of the application I filled out . How did it not get filled out right ! No answer. Why because I am just a Teir 1 throw boxes .
Im in a situation where people think that just I work for a company and there's a referral section that they think they don't have to stress and they automatically got the job its annoying and dealing with the unrealistic dream of people is so annoying. I will defiantly share and send the video to them. It not my problem if there job interviewing skills are not up to par and I can't do anything about that.
not sure if this is exactly the same scenario as you presented in the beginning.....i worked as a contractor one of the top 5 banks in the US as a contractor....they decided to hire me, but said I had to apply for the full time position on their website that was public to cover themselves. I didn't have to interview and I was given the position. stayed on the same team and made more money.
I'm sure they had to formally enter your application and probably record some sort of feedback even if it wasn't a formal interview. But yes, you had to apply. In the ATS. Nothing about this surprises me 😁
it really doesn’t matter - the submittal through the internal career page (usually the process for most companies) is what tags someone as being referred. :)
How do I get help with interviewing I need help! I get so nervous and haven’t interviewed in over 11 years. (I’ve been employed with the same company) but I just received a referral from a friend and I’m really interested in the position he referred me to. I hope to receive a call. But how do I give a great impression! I want that job so bad ! Thank You!
Well Said !! But I would love to add something As a fresher where there is tons of people applying for some role referrals do help one, becoming a medium for your resume and your work being looked at. P.S. I hate automated rejection mail(donotreply) dropping after 2 months.
That’s different than being referred by a company employee which is what this video is about. You may be thinking of REFERENCES which are typically not required at the application stage
@@AmyMiller but you’re contradicting yourself by saying at the end of the video the questions that’s gonna be asked or what we’re looking for into the person you referred is if they know you. You’re saying many referrals make this mistake by referring to us people they don’t know but again they didn’t refer them to you for no reason but till they saw they have the skills you demand or what you demand from them in general being in the team and part of the group... Let me tell you something, many referrals don’t discus with us for so long and build a friendship relation or some kind... they smile they be nice at the beginning then they don’t respond to any question we ask them to get to know about themselves... and many people apply for jobs without knowing someone in the industry or the company, if a referral is so much important for someone who’s looking a job and plus this one needs to be a referral who knows them well in life how can they have a chance to land their job then?... I’m confused!
@@buuzy252 no I don’t contradict myself. Don’t refer people you don’t know / haven’t worked with. It’s not hard. If you want to be the person who calls strangers, asks them lots of questions about their background, reviews their resumes and tries to determine through initial screening that someone may be a fit for the job, everyone is hiring recruiters. It’s quite lucrative if you’re good at it. 🤷🏼♀️
Hey Amy thanks for wonderful information, I am referred by my Manager in Amazon Italy 🇮🇹. I completed my application last week and today I received an email which says its incomplete, as I click on the "Complete your application" it shows the Candidate application status but not going to the Form I filled. Would you kindly guide what am I suppose to do it will be a pleasure if I get your response. Peace and have a nice time Thanks
Not necessary. If the person had referred you through the company careers page, we already have that info (they're an employee). Besides many people don't even read or want cover letters. 🤷🏼♀️
Very well said! So what would be the best way to find a mentor (in a technical area you desire to work in, but are not currently working in) if you don't know or work with anyone in that technical area?
Hello, I have applied for a business intern position and got invited for online challenge. Does getting referral help me at this point to get an interview or does it help only at the beginning of application for the profile to be viewed? Love your content btw :)
This is a tough one - you don't need someone to formally refer you to a role, because you're already under consideration :) so no referral is not a problem - BUT - If you know someone that can say nice things about you to the prospective hiring manager, that doesn't hurt.
