Emu Emax 2 | Sometimes the sequel is the best one

Emu Emax 2 from 1989. Often underrated next to the original Emax, but in this case I think the 2 triumphs the first one in every way. First and foremost in the sound and how to achieve that. Sometimes the sum is greater than the part, and this is the case here.

Growing up I listened to so much synth-pop and it's only natural that my own music takes inspiration from many of the acts I loved back then. I still love them and listen to them!
Howard Jones, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Erasure, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, The Human League, Propaganda. FGTH, Ultravox, OMD, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, Giorgio Moroder, Jean Michel Jarre, Jan Hammer, Alphaville, A-ha as well as loads of artists doing what is now called Italo Disco. And many more great acts like Nik Kershaw, Spandau Ballet, Wham, Dire Straits ++

The Emax II was a HUGE solution back in the day for playing live. That was its main purpose, on the right side of the panel you see the huge and long midi routing and implementation. You had even all those extra audio outputs. It was a sampler not to do things in the studio like the Ensoniq ASR-10, but to take on the road and be able to run everything reliably from it, the sequence, the drums, and enough memory for the sounds as well as a reliable internal hard drive. I bought my Emax II Turbo and the internal drive still working 30 years later, it was a military-grade drive. Sound quality... amazing, a very wide stereo image, no dithering, punchy, very clean and sounded expensive. Very good AD converters. It was made to last and deliver. A professional machine.

Always preferred the Emax 1 sound personally. But then when I’m after a vintage sampler I like to exploit the rough edges of the digital side (and the glue of the analog filter side). The emax 2 though has that early NIN, Depeche Mode sound which is also great. Different strokes for different folks. Great video

Emax I had an equivalent bit depth of 12 bit after the compression /expansion thing they used on their discs. But its all analog signal path (filter) from the oscillator on which is rather nice. Emax II was 16 bit, higher sample rate and stereo. So quite a different sound. Pristine more so. Plus its all digital as well. The filters in the Emax II were quite a leap at the time and impressed people. I ran both Emax I and II for quite a long time and it was a formidable combination. Currently I have an EMU E5000 ultra now and they managed to get all those sounds working on machines that came later. Great forwards compatibility..

I had some “Ambient” samples in my Emax II Turbo that vibrated the entire 1500 sq ft space we practiced in. Amazing stuff. We used it a lot to sample our own songs and save note space in our sequencers. Kind of a track bouncing hack, but it worked and gave it a heavy layered sound.

What a wonderful trip down memory lane. I've owned the EIII, Emax SE and the last Emu I sold which I had for 5 years was my favorite, the Emulator EII+HD. The EIII was a money pit and was constantly in the shop getting fixed, but theEmulator EII was strong and never had any issues. The Emax II sounds wonderful, what reverb are you using? I think I read once before you use the Vahalla stuff, which I have a couple of, and they are great. Thanks for these great videos showcasing these vintage pieces of gear.

If I recall, these went for about $3000 new -- compared to the Emulators, it was arguably "affordable." Never saw either a new or used Emax in a brick and mortar music store either. They were, at the time, permanently out of reach for a lot of us, but not nearly so much as a Fairlight which almost nobody could ever hope to afford. We knew the Emax II existed from reading Keyboard and Electronic Musician magazines. Ensoniq samplers were much cheaper for us plebs -- the lo-fi 8-bit Mirage and then the EPS a short time later -- about the same price as a Korg M1 perhaps. Yet it was the Akai S900 that everyone seemed to want and raved about, and the sampling craze of the 80s meant that everyone was dumping their analog gear for anything digital with sample=playback. But what an era though! :)

Was the Emax II played on my favorite Depeche Mode song, “Enjoy the Silence”? If so, did it have anything to do with the measure-length envelope filter sounds on the 3rd and 4th choruses and the fade-out section, or was that triggered using an analog VCF? Regarding the way you played those piano sounds, you didn’t do half bad, Espen. Subjectively, I think we musicians are too dependent on sustain pedals/switches. I spent six years playing a Roland VR-09 in the New York City underground, and when the sustain pedal broke on me, I didn’t bother replacing it. I sought to concoct a hybrid piano/organ technique.
@EspenKraft
@EspenKraft Год назад
I have no idea whatsoever what went down on the DM track. Not sure they used Emaxes at all in the studio, but they used them extensively live, for practical reasons. I usually don't use sustain pedals at all for anything but piano sounds. More often than not I just adjust the release times of sounds to play them without it. I know exactly what you mean though. I've played the church organ so you get to train your fingers in playing legato as much as possible.

@@EspenKraft There is also the internal SCSI2SD hard drive emulator option. Many are not aware that the EMAX II had an internal SCSI hard drive option on the higher priced models. These SCSI2SD HD emulators work just like a real hard drive. Just remove the back panel on the EMAX, connect the emulator HD into a 50 pin ribbon cable and plug into the open 50 pin connector on PCB Board next to the floppy ribbon connector. It formats the same way you would format an external SCSI drive and will record the OS onto the SD card, allowing you to boot up directly from the card, without any wear and tear on the original floppy drive. Price is around $100 online.

:O the filter slider only updates at NoteOn???!!!!! :O :O :O i used to have an 8 bit mirage, i was always jealous of the emax because i thought it was more capable, the mirage filter could be updated continuously but with buttons, i thought the emax II had filter cutoff from mod wheel. it is a bad demonstration, to demo an old sampler, sample and show the bit depth degradation options for that skinny puppy vocal sample aesthetic! and the filter! :x !!

Just to avoid confusion for people unfamiliar to the Emax line; you cannot upgrade the Emax to a Emax 2, they're two completely different machines.

@@anderslarsson6149 Not much information. A friend of mine bought the SCSI kit from US and he's waiting for me to install it into his Emax. As I remember it's a PCBA with bunch of wires that must be soldered to EMAX mainboard. Search the web little bit, I think there is no many options...

It's funny how time and nostalgia changes your feelings towards certain gear. Today propably most people like the cheasy sounds of these retro machines just for the gritty sounds. I remember how I disliked just about every american produced samplers and romplers up thru the 80'ies. I remember hating the Proteus with a vengeance compared to the roland U series. Propably also depends how you use the sounds. Most of those iconic american produced machines was not really about producing the ultimate realistic samples. Only thing that kinda got branded in my brain was first time I heard and played the Ensoniq Mirage Sampler playing with the first ever sax sample I felt sounded cool, and even it was only 8bit and kinda cheap for a sampler, it was still way over my budget at that time for its limited use on stage. Should say at that time we were flooded with music on the Radio from Sweeden by "Vikingarna" oi oi .. and there by the idea of getting a decent sax sound 😅 For those not familiar with the music it was kinda Country inspired music with a sax section and lovely crooner lead vocal, all swamped in reverb.

@@EspenKraft appreciate your reply. But are those not specific sounds made for the E-max 2? Specifically the chorus that you played first..
@EspenKraft
@EspenKraft 2 года назад
There's no such thing as sounds (patches) especially made for the Emax 2. Just start by sampling sounds you like and it will soon have that Emax flavor as you start to edit and manipulate them inside the Emax 2.

Where did you get the Saxophone sample from? Did you have a sax player record it?
@EspenKraft
@EspenKraft 2 года назад
I think I went over this in the "Those Days pt.2" video breakdown, but it's actually from a sample CD of sax riffs. I sampled a part of a riff and turned it into this.

espen both emax1 and 2 are gr8 samplers but they are different worlds . in the 12 bit samplers the emu shines but for me in 16 bit world samplers akais and rolands are boss and yes yes i know the emax2 is an early 16bit sampler

I consider ALIEN and ALIENS as different genres. ALIEN was a sci-fi horror/thriller movie while sequels were sci-fi action movies. Like the Ensoniq Mirage was a bit of an enjoyable horror compared to their later 'action' samplers! :-)

Respectfully: someone thinking the Emax 2 triumphs the first one "in every way" cannot distinguish the analog warmthness of those SSM filter and VCA on the one version. Looks like a clickbait movement to grab more viewers. In music, sounding cleaner is not always sounding better.
