Brethren not to brag, but have them all. Back in the mid 2000s I went on a scavenger hunt to build a complete P2K set. Doing so put me in a bit of gear debt, but was worth it. As I likely wouldn’t be able to do it in ‘23. It truly is amazing the current prices these pieces go for now. But the versatility afforded by having them makes for endless creativity. My E-MU collection has affectionately been named the “EMUSEUM”. These days, I find myself exploring the depths of the Morpheus and Ultra Proteus. From memory, the hardest rom to get was the “Holy Grail”, as there are lots of fakes out there. For those looking to embark on this journey. Happy Hunting ✌🏾👍🏾✊🏾

The cheapest way to get into that E-mu hardware sound is to buy a sampler in the ESI range, you can still pick them up really cheaply. I retrofitted my old ESI 32 that I bought back in the day with a Gotek drive, and it came free with a USB pen crammed full of factory disks/ROM stuff. It's best to pick up a unit with maxxed out RAM and the Turbo Kit, as the board has a bunch of additional I/Os, FX, and 17 filters from their Morpheus Z-plane synthesizer.

I've almost bought SO many ESI-32 or E6400s ive seen on craigslist. They're not as cheap as I was hoping (but $150 can get you a ESI32) especially for the max-ed out or upper models but when I think about getting a sampling solution to last for a while (I can't stand using the Logic Pro sampler mostly because with all the version switching and OS upgrades its not guaranteed that sample programs will be playable and unchanged over the years), though, I do want the EMU sampler because in my opinion they have the best method for pitch-shifting across the keyboard; I wonder if that's still true with all the improvements over time w time-streching and the like? My Roland MC-909 uses their Variphrase technology and its better than others but not as good as the EMU sounded when I had the Proteus /1

I bought an emu e5000 sampler that had an 80g hard drive fitted with all the ROM presets from all the EMU range from the start (early emulator synths/samplers) up to the various sound modules and well as a shedload of other Roland/Akai/Yamaha other synth ROM sets and sounds. The E5000 has thousands of banks of sounds. I can guarantee you’d never get bored of sounds to use!

I lucked out when I bought my PX-7 that was also stocked with MP-7, XL-7 and the Vintage Keys ROMS. My next move is to get an E-mu sampler and find the even more rare blank ROMs.

I used to have a E-MU MP-7 back in 2008. A year later, I added the X-Rom XL-7 rom to it, so it had both Pure Phatt and X-Rom chips in it. So, by 2010, I had a ball with it as a sound source while sequencing it with the MPC1000 I had at the time. I sold it in March 2011 to help fund upgrading my TR808 and buying a vintage analog synth that I got a good deal on, then later sold and made a huge profit on. I still miss that bad boy (MP-7). However, I still have my E4XT Ultra rack sampler with an external SCSI hard drive full of soundbanks and presets taken from these old Proteus 2000 series E-MU roms, but not the presets from the MP-7 and XL-7 Command Stations though. I miss those presets.

Those are powerful machines the presets you will get tired of but you can combine your sounds and making new ones along with adding effects to them so those machines get really deep if you spend time with them. The filters are second to none

I own both the Proteus 2000 and the Mo Phatt module that are nearly maxed out with rare ROMs. What I did is just buy the hardware sound modules an just pull the ROM cards out them and move over to my Proteus 2000 and then keep the extra Proteus module for parts. Infact that's what I did with my Mo Phatt that's sitting on my shelf as a parts machine for spare parts for my Proteus 2000 since the hardware is identically the same.

Seems like new modules could be homebrewed with modern flash chips instead of ROMs, so you could load them with your own sounds. I can't imagine there's any encryption or fancy copy protection on the original modules, so the contents could be copied. If whatever's left of E-MU cared, they could build up and release new modules.
@eman0828
@eman0828 10 месяцев назад
What new moduels are you reffering? E-MU stopped making hardware in 2002. I own the Proteus 2000 and the Mo Phatt but I kept the Mo Phatt for parts for the Proteus 2000 as I pulled the Pure Phatt card and moved over to my Proteus. I have the Extreme Lead X1 card in there as well.

@@eman0828 I'm thinking total new hobbiest-built modules that fit into old E-MU gear, like the retrocomputer people make new NES cartridges, soundcards, or SIMMs for their old computers and consoles. The modules would be made from all new parts but you could copy the data from the old modules and get the same sounds. maybe even some bank switching so you could have one module that could have all the old module contents in it.

Noble quest to search for that snare ..Now you got to remember there were only a hand full of drum machines at this time of 1986..Larry Smith produced "Funky Beat" and he used the Linn Drum and the TR 808 alot to a point he even was the first to start layering..He layered a 808 and Linn Drum snare together on "Friends"..In his early 1980s stuff he also used the DMX drum machine..His synths were the Prophet 5, MiniMoog..Sometimes a Fairlight and a Jazz Fender Bass..There were only a hand full of drum machines at that time so you can narrow it down..And the TR 707 came out in 1985..And he made the album with the "Funky Beat" in 1986 and he also used the 707 alot in his production..So I think your real close to getting your answer..All the preset sounds of these drum machines are available to be heard on line so..You'll get your answer...It's like a Hardy Boys mystery Lol!

@DaveDaves
@DaveDaves 11 месяцев назад
Yeah people go more nuts for these EMU ROMs than anything else. The Roland SRX cards are very expensive too, but there seems to be consistently diehard EMU fans who gotta have them all as you say - but also as you say they're just not enough out there bevause there wasn't a hgue install base of them originally. When EMU/Creative got shut down, they sold off the rights to sell the sound library to another company - I bought the Planet Phatt soundset in Soundfont format and its terrible, its nothing like the real thing. I've got the free Proteus VX which is the Proteus 2000 "Composer" soundset - I had the PK-6 back in the day and did not like it. I liked the Protean drum sounds one, in the PX-7, that I regret selling
@eman0828
@eman0828 10 месяцев назад
They did not sell the rights. Infact Creative Labs still owns the E-MU trademarks they are still using the band name for head phones. Digital Sound Factory is paying Creative Labs a license fee to license the sounds of the original wave forms of the Proteus moduels. But at the same time, nothing comes close to the hardware since the raw samples Sounds nothing like the hardware units because of the converters used on those old units hat gives it a more dirtier gritty warmth sound to then like lo-fi.
@eman0828
@eman0828 10 месяцев назад
Dave Rossum tried to buy back his band from Creative Labs but they said nope as they are still using it. Infact E-MU stands for "Electro-Music" hense the name Rossum Electro-Music that Dave came up with for his new company.

That is def one thing I will say about the Emulator X3 VST is I have almost every Proteus 2000 series ROM that I like in exb format,and it's just dead on soundwise. I never liked the sf2 either,like the drum kits were ok,but other patches def didn't behave the same. The DSF Kontakt libraries are kinda wonky too.

E-Mu had good sounds because they had all the libraries from the Emulator 3 that legit musicians worked on. But then Roland had the guys who made the Zero-G sample CDs making sounds for them. There’s a couple people making copies of E-Mu ROMs now. The samplers can burn them. The hard part is getting the blank SIMMs. But it looks like you can just about get anything for $200. It’s kinda sad how Reverb/eBay is just full of E-Mu modules with missing ROMs. A lot of UK composers got a Proteus 2000 then just got ROMs for it because that was the only 128-voice model they could get with all the outputs because they didn’t sell Turbo upgrades overseas. It’s a strange situation with those 64-voice modules. You got the Planet Earth which is hard to find but I think that’s just because they didn’t sell many, because it’s not much different from the Proteus/3, and the Proteus/3 has more outputs.
