Q: What goes up your nose at 200mph?
A: We may never know, as Rod Hull had to hurriedly stop young audience member Tony from telling that one on the telly, leaving us all on tenterhooks. The mind boggles! (No pun intended.) Anyway, that comes from a section featuring a guest appearance by Floella Benjamin. I remember her best for Play School (Reggae Rita!), but here she is to plug her new joke books. Of course, nowadays she's Baroness Benjamin. Who saw that coming?
The main storyline sees Grotbags ordering hundreds of Witches Union pamphlets to be copied by hand, but Redford would much rather write a play. So he does. Meanwhile, Carol Lee Scott makes what I think is her first appearance in Boggle's Kingdom as Daft Ada, a strange woman with an aversion to houses.
The songs sung are What D'You Know, We've Got a Show (from the Cliff Richard film The Young Ones), while long-serving Pink Windmill Kid Joe Greco gets his solo opportunity with Dancing Shoes (from another Cliff film, this time Summer Holiday). The original air date seems to be Friday, 14th March, 1986.
Look out for some Children's ITV continuity at the beginning featuring David "Kid" Jensen (and a trailer for Super Gran). Also, if you went to either Warrender Primary School in Ruislip or James Ruse Agricultural High School in a suburb of Sydney in the mid-80s, then you're going to enjoy the Twin Schools section. Bonus points if you can identify all the LPs on offer in the Spin Quiz's star prize.
Many thanks to Lindsay for lending me this tape.
(Please remember that this is an off-air VHS recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. That said, if you are a copyright holder and object, please don't hesitate to contact me.)
