The Pink Windmill Kids decide to have a go at rock climbing, while Grotbags hatches a plan to catch them reminiscent of a certain Pied Piper. In fact, she's so confident of success that she packs up all her belongings and is ready to move! The songs in this one are a brilliantly upbeat dance to Joy to the World (originally by Three Dog Night), plus Carol Lee Scott's touching rendition of Nobody Does It Like Me (from the musical Seesaw).
This episode was first aired as part of Children's ITV on Friday, 9th March, 1984, and - hard as it may be to believe - that actually overlaps with The Rod and Emu Show, a Saturday evening variety entertainment programme broadcast on BBC1 at the time. How many other people since then can boast major shows simultaneously on two rival channels? Maybe Ant and Dec achieved something similar, but I can't be certain there. It's difficult to describe just how much of a hot property Rod Hull was at the time.
Anyway, this is a fun episode with some very good jokes, and I love the way the plot backfires on Grotbags and Croc. Look out too for the very funny opening routine which Rod repeated six series later:
• Emu's World S6E9 (1988...
Although, technically, that's the next series of Emu's World, isn't it?
In the interests of full disclosure, a certain amount of jiggery-pokery has been done to the opening titles, and the end credits have been edited on from the final episode of the series, as both were incomplete in this recording.
Many thanks to Jayne for lending me this tape.
