I love the control of shooting in the studio. It’s my creative lighting playground where I have ultimate control. That being said, sometimes I love the look and feel of natural light. There are tools/techniques to help you emulate the feel of natural light, but with the control of studio lighting.
In this video, I want to show you how I used two lights and a specialty modifier to emulate the feel of evening sunlight coming in through a window.
Lighting recipe card:
lindsayadler.p...
Light 1: Westcott Optical Spot
The first light on the scene is the ‘magical modifier’ that will allow you to create the look of sunlight through a window. The Westcott Optical Spot is a category of modifiers that involves a lens (to focus light) and a gobo (‘go between’) to allow you to select any shape you want to project onto your subject.
The Westcott Optical Spot allows you to choose whatever mount you need for your particular brand of lighting. In other words, this modifier will work for you whether you shoot Profoto, Broncolor, Bowens, Elinchrom, Godox, and more. Plus, you can swap out mounts in case you can different brands of lights or you change your mind in the future. I used the Profoto D2 and mount.
The Westcott Optical Spot comes with a lens that is fantastic for tight areas of light (for example just lighting the center of the face). The lens, however, can be swapped out for any EF-mount lens (Canon, Sigma, Tamron, etc)! In this shot we switched to an EF 24-70mm lens because it gave a great spread to the light, illuminating the subject from head to toe even over a short distance.
A gobo (in this instance) is a disk that you can put inside the modifier using the gobo holder. The shape you choose can then be sharpened or defocused (using the lens) when projected on the scene. In this shot, I slightly softened the edges of the shadow to give a slightly more realistic quality to the effect. The Westcott Optical Spot comes with several gobos, and there are expansion packs available.
Light 2: Large Umbrella with Diffusion
Next, I decided to add a fill light. If there really were natural light coming in through a window it is likely that it would bounce around the room and fill in the shadows. Furthermore, not having pure dark shadows would add a bit more visual interest and depth to the scene.
For that reason, I added a Profoto Large Umbrella with Diffusion straight onto the frame to lift the shadows.
If you really want to sell the look of sunset light, you may want to push the idea even more in post-processing or with white balance.
Try a different white balance rather than just shooting on a flash or daylight presets. Consider shade or cloudy white balance to warm up the shot and give a more convincing evening light.
You can also try adjusting colors and white balance in post-processing. In this shot, I was shooting tethered into CaptureOne, and I adjusted the warmth of the scene (white balance) as well as added yellow to the highlights of the subject and a bit of red/magenta to the shadows.
Last but not least, I recommend shooting at a slightly wider aperture. Having the background out of focus a bit and a tiny bit narrow depth of field will help ‘trick’ the viewer into believing you are shooting natural light. In this image, I chose to shoot at F4 because I was shooting with the Canon R5 and Canon RF 24-105 (F4 is its widest aperture). Shooting with a different lens at F2.8 or wider may have created even more believable/pleasing results.

I don't use my studio that much anymore, but I wish i could have bought that Optical Spot back then. I have been a professional photographer since 1981, and in those days, we made our own gobos from high contrast plastic used for offset printing. This gave me the flexibility of drawing anything i could imagine and project it onto the background or the subject. It is invigorating to watch your videos, keep them coming, and have a very good year, Lindsay!

Really enjoyed this one, need a new snoot as mine has a fixed 85mm lens so no good for larger projections.

Thanks for yet another great video. Since you ate shooting tethered to Capture One with the R5, have you tried the new wireless tethering function in Capture One 22 ?

Why don't you try it and see if you like it instead of asking someone else? Generally, commercial pros like Lindsay don't like the unreliability and slowness of wireless connectivity. The R5 raw files are enormous, and even with a Tether Tools USB-C cable, transfer speed still creates a bottleneck. Photographers often shoot fast and need those files to push as fast as possible, and wireless connections generally aren't known for speed.

Not yet, did you try it? Is to worth it? On my to do list for 2022!

I just received the Optical Spot and am enjoying using it. I use the R5 and have sold almost all my EF lenses. I noticed you tend to use the 24-70 and was wondering if the 2.8 lens is needed or is the 4 good enough? I will get a used one but am also considering a 35mm rather than the zoom. Any suggestions or comments would be welcome.

Would a nikon to Canon EF lens adapter work on this?

Just checked this out on Adorama. Kinda disappointed that there isn't a nikon lens option.

And even as a Canon user, the only EF lenses I own are the nifty fifty and 180mm macro, since I have mostly RF lenses… But that's just too bad… We're lucky to have a product where you can use more than the kit lens at all…

@@lindsayadlerphoto so as a Nikon user, we couldn't do this particular set up?
@Cansamchin
@Cansamchin 6 месяцев назад
@@alyssaduncan4143 So she mentions that you could get a lens adapter and I did find one that goes from nikon to canon EF but I'm not sure if this is the case for DSLR or mirrorless lenses or both. I am hesitant to invest without knowing for sure but there is a side of me that wants to be impulsive and buy it to try it out.

@longliveclassicmusic
@longliveclassicmusic 2 года назад
You WOULDN'T do the same. That's what you would do if you're not willing to order an optical snoot - you WOULDN'T do any of this.
@lindsayadlerphoto
@lindsayadlerphoto 2 года назад
You would have to use hard light through a gobo/cut out. You'd move the hard/direct light source really really really far away to make it nice and hard!

One of the best youtuber photographers, still you use probably the crappiest L lens: the 24/105. Why?

Hmm, you answered your own question: the best photographer proves that lighting + skills >> lens.🤔😁
@longliveclassicmusic
@longliveclassicmusic 2 года назад
Because she's someone who actually works on high pressure commercial assignments where when she needs something she needs it then, not after a 30 second lens change every 2 minutes. Have you ever even opened an issue of Vogue? You won't find a single spread that's absolutely pin sharp. It's entirely about the CONTENT. And even though Lindsay owns literally the sharpest lens on the entire full frame camera market - the RF 85 1.2 - it doesn't make her job easier to create the content she needs like the 24-105.
