Thanks for the great video! Two comments though, placing the ES-DE application data directory on an SD card leads to performance issues on some devices, so if ES-DE starts or runs very slowly it's a good idea to move this folder to internal storage instead. And launching native Android apps and games has actually been supported in ES-DE as of the 3.0.2-21 release, meaning ES Applauncher is only needed for importing your apps and games and not for launching them. I anyway plan to add a built-in import tool in a future version, hopefully for the 3.2.0 release.
@@satyampaswan3995ye you can. You can also individually scrap as well between the 2 scrapers I managed to get a decent amount of artwork scraped and even a couple of videos. Anything missing you can add yourself. Just imitate the file structure as it is for all the other systems
@@nezuminora9528Originally, it did. Now it's ES-DE as its full name, as it's so far departed from Emulation Station on a code level that it's entirely its own thing
As mentioned in the FAQ, it's in a transition period so the full legacy title is still in use. I think at this point more people would be confused without hearing the full title. No harm, no foul.
@@nezuminora9528you are not wrong. OP is just saying that the official preferred name of the project is ES-DE or ES-DE Frontend, not fully spelled out (i.e. ES-DE vs EmulationStation Desktop Edition). It's not a big deal since the developer has said that it's acceptable to use the full name for the time being.
Daijisho: Yuzu has been shutdown, but people still can use it and get it, so ill keep it as an option because its really no trouble. ES-DE: Yuzu has been shutdown, so im going to wipe all traces of it from the frontend and make you have to do a workaround to select it. Ive never understood this logic.
@@eurosoe Sure, but having Yuzu be selectable out of the box isnt breaking any kind of taboo. I shouldnt be having to do work arounds like that for a PAID frontend.
Es-de is a much more well known frontend. They just don't want to deal with any possible headaches. Would you rather they do this or they get shutdown?
Yessss, this launcher breathed new life into my RP2S after using Daijisho for so long. Im a big fan of it, I used an old video guide of yours to set that up and it works amazing.
Daijisho is able to filter games by genre though. Downloaded game metadata already includes the genres. Hopefully in a future ES-DE update that can be used to quickly create collections per genre.
@@peejae082004 True, but if I want pinball games, I don't want ALL pinball games, I only want the ones I want. One of the reasons why I chose ES-DE over Daijisho.
I just the es is generally better in almost every way. Looks nicer and is much more customisable. Easier to navigate. Dajisho may be a bit easier to set up id say that's all it has over es
Thanks Russ for your continued fantastic efforts! You sold me on an RG351P way back. I recently built an RG556 with Daijishō and loved that. Now you've got me wanting ES-DE on my new Odin 2. This retro hobby is so addictive! I've got the RG35XX SP, RG40XX H and R36S still to build too. I'm running out of space for these handhelds...but don't worry, I'll make more! If only there was more time! I'd spend some playing...like on the RG552 that I still love too! Argh!!! Just keep them videos rolling! Big thanks!
Wow! Actually learned something new. Didn't know you could re-scrape individual games, and refine the search while doing so. I have a couple games in my collection that I have never been able to properly scrape. Every time I wanted to try again, I'd have to shut down my RP4P, pop out the SD card, try changing the filename to something that would hopefully search properly, put the SD card back in, reboot my RP4P, and then try scraping again. Which was a major pain, so I eventually gave up. Just now I tried re-scraping one of those problem games, and after a couple of rounds of refining the search by tweaking the name a bit, was finally able to get it matched. Super convenient!
Have you made a video on installing the most popular emulators on Android with the most recommended settings? If not, I think it would be an incredibly useful guide for people (like me) wanting to set up ES-DE on their phones but not knowing how to start.
Awesome job with this video, and thank you so much for all of the work you put in to create it! I just recently picked up a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro, and while I love it, I haven’t been impressed with the main front ends (Daijisho and RetroidLauncher) for it and missed the ES front ends on my other handhelds. This is exactly what I was hoping for, and I love the customization options and the ease at swapping out themes. ❤
Minimized scraper option on all versions of ES-DE would be amazing... it's nice to configure or browse your library while it scrapes. Plus, it would up scraping speed.
Great timing, I just bought ES-DE for Android last night, then today you post this! I'm going to use ES-DE for my Logitech G Cloud that I bought recently; I haven't set up any emulation on it yet, and I'm brand new to emulation, so I'm hoping this guide will help.
Just found about ES-DE last week, very happy with the performance on my phone. Would have liked some touchscreen features, I always forget it's controller only.
Such an amazing job man. Thank you for another amazing guide. I would add (if i may) after you have all your rom folder that you actually have games in them. It is recommended to delete all other folders that are empty. It makes es-de scan folders faster. 😁
The setup process is the same on an android box such as the shield as it is here. If you're on a pc it's not that different either tbh apart from you need to set where your emulators are
I've been able to set up a few devices for gaming in the living room. I'm more curious what shades and or filters are widely used for big screen gaming.
This is amazing! Thank you for being so detailed in your walkthrough. It's extremely helpful. I'm going to try this out on my Android Shield, since right now I'm just using Retroarch directly, and it's not nearly as nice of a UI as ES-DE.
Just installed and calibrated some hall sticks on my my RP3+ and thought I was done messing about with stuff... Might be time to say peace to daijisho.... Thanks for the upload as ever man!
Great timing. I was just about to maybe get my first Android gaming device, and wondering how to set it up. Ballsy move though, to show Nintendo artwork in the same video that you show how to set up Yuzu, play romhacks, etc.
Hey Russ, great video. Thanks also for mentioning how to migrate with ES DE. Is there an option to migrate an entire Android Setup, ie, HD Textures, Saves, Emulators, etc by copying. Indeed I think more guys are now checking out different handhelds so please indicate how we can make moving stuff around as easy as possible. Thanks
Thanks once again for this awesome guide. Its always a joy to watch your videos. Is it possible to change the Icon on the Main Customs Game Folder? That would be super cool. Cheers from Germany 😊🤗
I have bought the Odin 2 because you said it is still the king. And it really was. The problem is the one I bought got an issue (defective right analog stick) when it arrived. The sad thing is that it was their last stock. I only held it for 2 days and 1 night but I still miss it until now. I should have been setting up this new guide. So sad. Anyway, another very helpful guide. Autolike.
Excellent video, as always. Thank you so much! My 5 cents anyway: be sure to download the latest retroarch apk. And, everytime you run a game from ES-DE, you'd better quit retroarch before you start another game. Otherwise, you may be staring a black screen.
As usual, amazing work. Thank you. A question: I know you just did the (also excellent) shaders and overlays guide for the Linux based systems... do you have a set of preferred shaders and overlays (bezels, I guess) for the RP4P? I'd love to know your favorites, since that's clearly a handheld you use a ton and it's my primary device these days.
So, in your original setup video I followed for the RG556 I downloaded AnyHome so that I could point to ES-DE as my home app. Is this no longer necessary? I love having ES as my start up and it makes the 556 just amazing. It works so well. Another great how-to Russ! Thank you. Edit: I answered my own question. ES does not show on the RG556 as a default app. I'm not sure why but I still have it set up with AnyHome and it works great.
I liked emulation station when I had it on the Steamdeck! However when I switched to a 2 tb and card I sort of lost all my set up and I’m too lazy to set it up again. But maybe I should try this for the Odin 2!
Can you store roms for different systems in different locations? E.g older systems on microsd but only ps2 specifically on internal storage? And would you be updating your written guide for Android? Think there plenty of options such as esde, beacon etc not mentioned
You seem like the right guy for me to ask this. About EmuELEC, is the amlogic system any better than idk, Retropie? Like, raspberry pie with emulators? For a definitive solution for retro gaming, each one would you recommend? Does EmuELEC just runs retroarch on amlogic devices? Man I really don’t understand these stuff. Do you think a windows computer with retroarch or a menu with a lot of emulators would be the best way to use the best emulators available for each old console/game?
Are there any major differences between this video and the one you did 7 months ago also on Emulation Station? I was just watching that one like 2 weeks ago, and they seem similar. Just want to know if I'm missing anything! Thank you!
Your videos are extremely helpful . I have one question . I used your guide for setting up Odin 2 which was perfect but if you use this guide now after setting everything up you have to change roms folders now for es-de ? Please let me know thanks
Are there any plans on making a video that goes over how to configure ES-DE to pull from multiple directories? I looked it up and apparently it IS possible even though the app only lets you set a single directory in the settings, but it requires creating a custom XML file or something like that. The ES Applauncher solves one of the big shortcomings that ES-DE had on Android, but I'm still partial to using Daijisho on my Odin 2 Mini since my ROM library is pretty big and is split between the internal storage and an SD card. My only other solution would be to buy a 1tb SD card and call it a day, but that's about $90 which...hurts.
I have set up everything on my device, and it works wonderfully. There’s only one problem: every time I reboot the device, it starts the setup process again. When I click cancel, I am taken to my configured system. Why does the setup start every time I reboot?
Hey man, great video as always, can you test/confirm if subfolders work on this? For example If i have the NES folder for my roms but I also have a subfolders in there for hacks and other for translations etc. This is really important for me, maybe the only reason I'm changing from daijisho. Thanks ins advance
I’m new to retro gaming emulators and have noticed that many of them require quite a bit of tinkering with online downloads and file uploads. For those of us who aren’t tech-savvy or simply prefer a more hassle-free experience, are there any reliable emulators that come fully stocked with games and don’t require constant updates or adjustments? I recently bought the R36S, but it broke after just one day. I watched a few tutorial videos on how to modify it, but I’d rather avoid spending too much time and effort updating or fixing things. Ideally, I’m looking for something I can just turn on and play. Any recommendations?
I really loved this guide but I still don’t see why this is better than Daijinsho. I find that Dai looks better, can scrap easily and manages games automatically especially multi disk games. I do love the themes however.
Themes, video clips built into the game lists, more intuitive menu navigation, easy copy/paste when adding a new device to your collection, you can port your sd card from one device to another. Dainisho was a good temporary solution but there’s no comparison anymore.
In all of these types of videos, no one ever mentions if you can use your own scraped media for people that have downloaded the box art/Logos/videos previously. Like, can I just drag and drop my own media into relevant folders rather than having to scrape/download them all again? Does anyone know the answer to this? I would love it if someone would do a tutorial video on this.
