The built in chunky pixel mode on the falcon really helps, the amiga version is truly hampered by not having a chunky mode. If AGA had featured this the Amiga version would have been much faster than the ST version as it also had a full 32-bit data bus. Provided it also had some fast ram of course.

If my information is correct, Atari Falon screen is also converted to chunky pixel. For Atari Falcon, conversion to chunky pixel is easier and takes fewer resources. The CT60/63 card is a very fast card due to its very fast memory. Only the newer designs of turbo cards for the Amiga compete well with the Atari Falcon in terms of speed. The Amiga CD32 is an interesting design, it has hardware conversion to a chunky pixel (Akiko chip). Regards

BadMood uses the Falcon's chunky 16-bit mode. It's lucky that this mode exists; every other mode on the Falcon is planar and I imagine that would have made it significantly more expensive to implement Doom.

the atari falcon version is far superior; i like the upgraded textures and more colour support. running at 16mhz, its running the same as the amiga, well a little faster. run the clock on the falcon at 50mhz and play this again, head to head; the falcon will crush the amiga. try playing it with the mouse next time instead of the keys, youll find it to be a much nicer experience. the amiga is vanilla, however the amiga sucks :) yet in retro spect, it took atari how long to build something that actually kicks ass? someone needs to reverse engineer the falcons board and let people build new ones, inexpensive enough. im sure the dsp can be put on an fpga or something, or even use a pi in its place to that extent. well, atari won this one.

Atari released great equipment with DSP. I have an Atari TT connected to a Yamaha CBX-D3. My Atari TT and Cubase also have DSP (with Yamaha). I love recording music on the Atari, that's what this equipment was made for.

Doom on the Amiga loads up super quick if you add buffers to the hard drive you are loading it from. I think the command is something like this. Addbuffers hd0: 1000

I specifically loaded Amiga and Atari games in the same way. HDDs were connected to the motherboards. The landing time is very similar.

The Atari version's textures look weirdly altered, and there are effects programmed into it that aren't original doom. That's some kind of improved version. The Amiga version acts vanilla.

I agree with your opinion. I just had such versions at the time of recording the material.

If I understand it correctly, BadMood makes use of the Falcon's 16-bit colour mode and implements some lighting tricks that weren't in the original Doom.

the 68030 has a hard time with Doom. even the slowest 68040 is a huge improvement. Adoom on the Amiga plays background music and its freely available on Aminet. Doom runs with less than 6mb ram, MSDOS is 4mb i think...Nice to see the Atari falcon version, it's a pitty the horrible ST didn't have some of its features

Doom on 68030 and 386DX processors works very similarly. Playing in full screen requires a lot of patience :)

horrible ST? Amiga was not much better, for many tasks the Amiga was "horrible" when compared to ST, much slower. And at the end STE was much better then A500, pity it was poorly supported by software makers...
@nowy80Retro

@@madigorfkgoogle9349 Amiga and STE do well in specific applications. I believe that Atari's big mistake was to keep selling STs when STEs were available. STE has not become a standard in Atari.

@@nowy80Retro I agree, the thing was that Atari had its own software house Atari Games and failed to do the same thing as Commodore did in 1987, and didnt financially support independent software producers. So they cared less that Atari surpassed Amiga A500 in 1989...

I prefer the Amiga! The Falcon game looks like if it was faster, but the Amiga screen is bigger, and the Falcon graphics are darker (a small cheat, but it also brings something in speed). Also the Amiga graphics are closer (actually the same) to the original. The Amiga experience is kind of the PC Doom, on a 486 DX-2 66 MHz configuration (I played on that too)

The Falcon screen size and color match the VGA output. Native RGB looks a bit different. Please take this into consideration. Regards

not really, on my 486dx2 50 mhz I played doom PROPERLY, not like this
@madigorfkgoogle9349
@madigorfkgoogle9349 Год назад
you kidding right? Amiga version has totally washed out colours. The blue and red has to glow like on Falcon. The slightly darker tone doesnt bring any speed advantage... 50MHz clock with Fast RAM should be much faster over 16MHz + Chip RAM, but still the Falcon version is more fluid while playing back the background track, and this is not the recent version optimized by DML. /flame_mode=true/ *Amiga is junk* 😈 :/flame_mode=false/

Maybe the Amiga port needs to optimizes, cause P4P the Falcon kills it.

Both computers have processors that Doom was not prepared for. Both the Amiga and Atari Falcon handle this title well with the 060 processor.

Hi, It is about the same. I recall trying MS DOS version of Doom on small Compaq Aero laptop with 486/33MHz CPU, 4 MB RAM, back in the days, and gameplay was a slideshow, not really playable experience... To me it seems that Atari Falcon is winner here obviously. Cheers!

@@nowy80Retro the PCs depended on VGA card as well, so maybe he had very slow VGA card in the 486. Normally a faster 386DX with ET-4000 or faster card could handle Doom OK.

@@madigorfkgoogle9349 I agree that the dependency between the computer and the graphics card is large. Looking back over the years, I have much more fondness for Amiga or Atari than PC. Regards
