Here we take a look at setting up multiple tab rows in Firefox using some advanced features hidden within the browser.

From firefox 107, if u have a problem with it that it takes a lot of unnecessary rows, just turn layout.css.moz-box-flexbox-emulation.enabled to true in about:config thanks to MrOtherGuy (he posted that solution in github but I'm just giving it here for those who are looking for the quick fix)

you are the best! i was looking for this tweak for years! thank you very much. i also edited the css file (via text edit) and changed 3 rows to 2 rows and 150 to 100, looks much better. thank you very much again.

Excellent. Finally I can have my many pinned tabs spanning multiple rows. Too many pinned tabs was causing my unpinned tabs to be almost inaccessible when in a single row. This completely solves it and as a bonus I don't have to have multiple Firefox windows open. Totally cool, thank you.

Thank you, man. Just a little note for Linux users - the file must be named as userChrome.css, not UserChrome.css

nice...is there a way to group separate firefox browser tabs with some type of label on a multi monitor set up so things stay organized? or perhaps a control panel that opens up so you can see all the separate windows with tabs and label them there?

I used opera for years and this feature was included then when opera died, never got a browser that can do this :D. Is great to get this in firefox thanks!.

I'm using FF 87.0. This worked for me but it DOES show the X for tab closure on all tabs. On the other hand, I lose the "New Tab" button (+ sign) and can't find it anywhere unless I go to "customize". It appears there but once I close customize, it disappears again. Any ideas?

Hmmm strange. As a work around you can try control-t on windows and command+t on Mac to open a new tab

Old question but the answer might help others. The "New Tab" (+ sign) is on the last row, next to your last TAB (yes it appears on the right handside of the tab rows when you go to the "Customize Toolbar" menu but it does not stay there. You have to scroll to the end of your tab rows to find it. At least it's what I've got with FF 101.0.1 on my Pop!_OS (Ubuntu like)

This would be useful for me if the extra rows only appear on hovering. Having them active all the time would take too much vertical space from pages.

Odd, doesn't want to work in Firefox 80 in Ubuntu...folder is definitely in the right spot and legacy option is set to true, rebooted several times just in case. Any other tricks you think?

@@69MaxPower69 For Linux you have to rename the file in camelCase like this: userChrome.css (and not UserChrome.css as in the ZIP file)

I use Win11 and for me it worked when I pasted script without .css. So only with the name UserChrome. And as someone previously mentioned in comments, it is possible to make 2 rows by modifying the script, instead of 3 which are by default.

You breezed through the actual file. How do I download the file? The Github link takes you to an entire list of different Firefox hack files, multi-row_tabs.css is one of them but how do I actually download it? What do I do with it? I have the chrome folder. I don't want to use the direct download and give 3rd party access to my info. Now what?

I guess you need to adjust number in line " --multirow-tab-min-width: 100px; " in userChrome.css

@@a2phathe add-on was called TabsMixPlus, it was bounced off the Firefox repository, I think the dev maintained it independently for a while but even that seems to be defunct now RIP :-(
