The Rt Honorable Grand Chief Sir Micheal Somare spent his early years of childhood in Rabaul, East New Britain Province.
He was born in Rabaul in 1936, while his father was serving as a policeman during the colonial administration.
The people of Rabaul although deeply saddened by Sir Michael's passing, are grateful for this piece of history connecting them to the child who thirty-nine years later would become PNG's first Prime Minister.
