This week, by popular demand, we are revisiting the Folger Theatre production of "Sense and Sensibility," adapted by Kate Hamill from the novel by Jane Austen. The ensemble production was directed by Eric Tucker and won that year’s Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Production.
Cast member Erin Weaver introduces this excerpt in which her character, Marianne Dashwood, is quite literally swept off her feet by the charming John Willoughby (Jacob Fishel), despite wise advice from her down-to-earth sister Elinor (Maggie McDowell). With choreography by Alexandra Beller, this scene is a shining example of the humor and heart at the center of Austen's novel.
"Sense and Sensibility" ran in collaboration with the Folger exhibition, "Will & Jane: Shakespeare, Austen, and the Cult of Celebrity," which explored the parallel legacies of arguably the two most popular writers of English literature -William Shakespeare and Jane Austen.
