I really like the fact the darned thing works like they say and also they tell you exactly what "type" of end fed it is. I don't much care for the overly thick wire for a 30 watt antenna of course that's easily remedied issue :-)

These antennas do best as a sloper... with the feed end on the ground. Also a counterpoise alligator-clipped to the ground screw makes a real nice setup. An inverted L would be a real lossey setup. It would require a tuner for 30m because it’s cut for 80,40,20 & 10. 30 isn’t a proper wavelength multiple.

I believe the coil is to adapt the resonant frequency for a few of the bands, mainly 10M, not to prevent RF from "going back to your radio" as you stated. Otherwise, nice video! I am a big fan of EFHW antennas!

I have the 300 watt version, have it up about 35' and so far on 100 watts I've talked with South America, Europe, and all over the USA and Canada with ease on several bands. I use a tuner just to be safe but based on results it must be tuning up easy on several bands.

I ordered the 300watt on Thursday for HRO/ I put a pulley in a tree with 5 old window weights so when the wind blows it won't pull and the antenna. Vid to come soon.

Hey Aaron, I have a 69 foot tree next to my house. I couldnt throw the end of the cable that high and over the 69 foot tree so I attached the cable wire to my drone. I then I flew the drone up in the air on the right side of the tree, then while in 69ft of mid air I then flew the drone over the 69 foot tree to the left side and then I landed the drone down to the ground. This allowed the cable to go from the right side of the ground all the way up (69ft) and over the top of the 69 foot tree and back down on the left side of the tree. The drone pretty much layed the cable out perfectly over the tree instead of me having to try and through it 69ft in the air over the tree. You should try it.

I use this technique also, what I do is suspend a 1oz fishing sinker weight with a 12 foot peace of masonry cord under my drone. (Bebop 2).Then I fasten masonry cord to the weight so it keeps the cord away from my props, by holding it 12 feet down under the drone, this way it well not get tangled up in the props. Lower It down to the 12 foot level on the back side of the tree, and cut loose the masonry cord and pull my cord with the rope and antenna over the tree. It works done It many times. Kd4jrx

After getting into ham for the first time earlier this year, and now have my extra, I finally got an hf rig. 😁 Been RXing on an SDR for a couple months. Running an ft-991 with a Chameleon Emcomm III. First HF contact CA, and second contact NY....lol...go figure. Both 40m. Have checking into a couple 40m nets. Its tough on the emcomm though. Thinking of installing a nice 40m and a 20m dipole. Its a lot easier for me to install an endfed though due to shack location. So would it be worth getting the longer emcomm III....the 130’ version as opposed to the portable version that I have now....or is it best to just set up a dipole?

Yes you can. But as always, the ground quality and local interferences may play a part in performance. Many retirees in small homes use a setup as you describe with good success.

Great video Eric. I have this same antenna but have it set up to use with my new IC-7300. I trim the output to 30 watts. How far pat 30w can I push this and what happens if I put 100w through it?

I have the 10M - 80M version and have had it to the field on 8 occasions in the year that I've other it. It receives well on all bands. I have been pretty unsuccessful on over 10 hours of operating on any more with this antenna. I have less than 5 contacts on CW and phone using NVIS, inverted Vee with apex > 25 feet and end points about 5 feet high, and flat top about 15-20 feet. I have made a number of contacts with FT-8 but I'm pretty disappointed overall with results from this antenna. I've tried daytime and night time operation with virtually no change. I haven't given up but I don't use this as a primary antenna until I "crack the code" and figure out why I don't get the results that others have raved about.

Try a more flat antenna. I have the MP version of the 80-10m Worked 80,40,20,15, and 10 meters in about an hour, hour and a half on SSB phone. New York to Hawaii Canada to Texas and everything in between .(was not looking for any DX) and about 40 contacts. Every report was as good or better than what I gave. Running about 70w in a park. 20’ up running flat.

I have the MFJ-1984MP 40-10 version which I have tested in the field. The antenna works w/o a tuner on 40,20,15, and 10 as advertised. I do nee to use the rig tuner on 30, 17, and 12 but the antenna in an inverted vee using a push up pole 25 feet at the center and the ends at 4 feet above the ground works well in a scenario where you are in a field with no trees. That could be important if you're in a scenario where you have no trees available in a disaster. de N1MHV

I found these to be crap right out of the box. I got the 80-10m 800 watt version. would work on 1 or 2 bands and that was it. After having up for a while and tuning the nuts off of it in several configurations. I opened up the matching unit and found it had underrated capacitors and they test as bad. And the unun looked like a 3 yr old waded up some wire and shoved it in there. I re wound the unun with one of my own types of windings and what do you know, I got low swr matches on several bands including 10m which never came near down below a 10:1 swr on old unun. it matched on 80m 40m 20m 15m and 12m and 10 without a tuner and hit all the other bands less 160m and 6m easily on the auto tuner. And did it with original wire length. MFJ anything is hit and miss if it is going to work at all, they have no quality control anymore.

Aahhh… So it doesnt need to be a taut wire. An easy little sag in the loop seems ok.

Despicable how MFJ copies products unashamedly. The EFHW, particularly with the compensation coil (which improves SWR on the high bands - it does NOT reduce Rf coming back as stated in this video LOL) was built and popularised by Danny at Myantennas in 2014.
