I agree with your decision to glue everything up at once for edge/face grain glue up. I’ve tried wide panels in two stages and they never feel quite right. After the end grain glue up I use a Veritas LAJ to great effect and cover the entire board. It’s a great feeling seeing the grain come alive during this process. I check flatness of the board on a granite counter in my kitchen-so I’m doing a lot of back and forth. It might take me two or three hours, but it’s a good workout and I’ve got it down so all the follow-up sanding is done is under an hour.

As a cabinet maker and Joiner I actually really enjoyed your explanation in this video and it kept me watching so thank you for this, it was very enjoyable to watch someone else make something in their own way. You never know when you could learn new tricks at 55 years old. Love your clean workshop as well, wish my workshop was a little bigger, can always do with more room lol.

If you keep the pieces running continuously through the thicknesser and use a sacrificial piece at the end you should be able to reduce snipe. Great job on the board.

Another great RU-vid that John love listening to you work would love to be able to see this bit of work. It makes me think might have to get my dad to get is thickness plana what he keeps on about or sending this video. To keep a flat edge you might want to purchase a glass chopping board as it is big enough to glue up been using him quite a bit for wet and dry paper and keeping things flat in my garage. Stay safe hope your family is okay look forward to the next one

Beautiful work john enjoy your videos very much As a carpenter joiner with over 40years experience I'm impressed by your woodworking skills Like some other comments i don't know how you operate without a table saw . The comments are woodworking forum in itself i.e. sources for glue,lumber etc. Finally I'm thinking of upgrading my bandsaw to a sabre 350 or 450 by record the saw you have looks pretty decent Regards Liam

What a fantastic walk-through and presentation style John. I have been making these myself with Oak and my bandsaw / thicknesser. One of the things I did to make it easier was to build a router sled so I can flatten the boards quickly that way. You said that you're an electrician by day and do woodworking as a hobby, but your setup must have cost tens of thousands. How did you decide to invest so much money into your hobby? Do you see it making you some returns in the future?

Another enjoyable video John. Your initial dimensions were set at 450mm x 350mm (14 inches not 16), this is only slightly over the capacity of most hobby thicknessers and so if you made it just slightly narrower it would probably fit through your thicknesser. I think you were just looking for a reason/excuse to use your lovely new hand plane! What happened to the alignment of the walnut stripes as shown near the end, you were very careful to line them up prior to glueing so I'm surprised?

Nice video John, just discovered your channel. I'm in the same position like many UK woodworkers, no table saw. No bandsaw either. Trying to figure out if this can be done with a TS55 tracksaw and a Kapex mitre saw, using a router table with an offset outfeed fence to joint the pieces. I've glued up many guitar body blanks using the router table as a jointer. What could go wrong? ;-)

How did you do the rest of the track saw cuts (around 20:50), once the piece you were cutting became less wide than your track? You cut away before showing that. I also don't use a table saw in my shop, so I'm always looking for tips from others for how they use their track saw instead.
@ThePSMA
@ThePSMA Месяц назад
I thought the same, my guess he used some extra blocks at the end to support the track. I'm just a hobbyist and will try building some end grain cutting boards. don't have a table saw so I'm intending to use this same method, glad to see it works. Also, to plane the end grain (also before 1st cut) I'll use a router with a planing bit (Tornado 35mm) with a sled, I think it will work much easier. Overall a great video with lots of tips, very well explained and with a fantastic result.
