Making an end-grain cutting board is fun and fairly simple. It takes an eye for detail and a little bit of planning, but it's a fundamental woodworking project that anyone with a table saw can make. In this video, I'll take you step-by-step through the entire process of designing and building a cutting board. The online software I used is a free site called Cutting Board Designer JS: ofb.net/~uranium/cbdjs/cb.html
There are three types of wooden cutting boards:
The cheapest and most basic is a face grain cutting board. It’s simply a board, or maybe a couple boards edge joined together to make them wider. The thickness of a face grain cutting board is limited to the thickness of the lumber used to make it.
A step up is an edge grain cutting board. To make this, you glue the faces of a bunch of boards together and their edges become the cutting surface. From a durability standpoint, an edge grain board is about the same as a face grain board. The advantage though, is that you can easily make a much thicker cutting board. Of course, this will require more lumber.
But the most prized cutting board is the end grain cutting board. These are made up of lots of small boards with their faces and edges joined together, using the end grain of the boards as the cutting surface. These can sell for several hundred dollars or even several thousand dollars each, depending on the size. Like with the edge grain cutting board, you can make these as thick as you want. 1” to 2” thick boards are common, but you could even make a free standing butcher’s block. These are the most time consuming boards to make and require the most lumber.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Steve glues up a face-grain board in the frist glue-up, however, your diagram is titled "Edge-grain board." Based on the calcuation from the line "End- or edge-grain board width: " I think the diagram should be titled "Face-grain board", yes? The width of the "edge-grain board" would be calculated based on the thickness of the source wood, but your software is calculating the width of the first board based on the width column in the table (the width that each piece is cut to), making the diagram a face-grain glue-up. Am I missing something here? Steve's turned out fine because his source width and cut-width were the same. When I tried it, however, I had a source width of 1 inch but cut each piece to 1.5 inches and the first diagram width was incorrect when I went glue it up in an "edge-grain" orientation.

@@TeaLoveandCare I don't use the term "face grain", only edge or end, to be clear. What I'm calling edge, I think you're calling face. That's probably more accurate, but that's not how I wrote the software, so I'm going to stick to my way for this answer. What I'm calling width is actually the vertical dimension in the diagram; I call the horizontal dimension length, as it's longer in the sample board and in the boards I've made. Since the slices are cut vertically, that means that end and edge grain boards have the same width; it's only their length that differs, by a factor of the slice thickness divided by the edge-grain board thickness, and accounting for kerf. Does that clear things up?

Don't forget to raise the grain! Sand, then mist the board with water before resanding; you'll notice a huge difference once you put on the mineral oil finish.

Mineral Oil can be found in the Over The Counter section of the Pharmacy with the Laxatives. A large bottle is only a couple Dollars at Wal-Mart. The challenge is finding it in stock. Most economical purchase option I've found for it anyway.

Right‽ Every other video I've seen has been like "this is a super easy project that your SO will love! [... 10 minutes later ...] ok, now just take all this over to the industrial planer I got on craigslist 20 years ago for a steal! You can do this with hand tools, if you want, but it'll add a lot of time!" Well, thanks for the video that you claimed was super easy and only required some basic tools at the top! What I got out of Steve's video is that this IS an accessible project, provided you have enough clamps ... oh that note, I need a LOT more clamps because this project looks great!

Seriously Steve, thank you so much! I finished my first end grain cutting board last week. It's 8" x 11" and perfect for cutting fruit for our morning smoothie. I used the software with maple, cherry and walnut wood and I love it! I also used my new push block (with a cleat) and my new 'simple' cross-cut sled. Keep them coming, we're paying attention! Also, this project was especially fun because I was working with smaller pieces of wood so it didn't feel like a construction project!

Steve, This is definitely the best end grain cutting board I have seen. Thanks for sharing all your insight and methods. I have been wanting to make one for a long time. I am glad to see that you did not drill holes and attach those rubber feet. An old trick we used to use when I was a line cook is to place a damp kitchen towel between the cutting board and the counter top. It will keep the board in place and soak up quite a bit of juice if any happens to escape over the sides of the board.

This is the most understandable cutting board video of the zillions that are on YT! Until I watched this I was not inspired to make my own, nor to spend vast sums on an end grain board. I like this design and this video so much that I decided to make one myself. I had some maple and walnut scraps I wanted to use up. There were many imperfections in my scrap pieces (which is why they became scrap in the first place). I could tell they would not adapt well to end-grain, so I decided to go with face-grain. The result is a beautiful board that I am extremely happy with. It may not be as durable as an end-grain board, but it wasn't serving any purpose as scrap on my basement floor. In the process, I realized how Steve's approach is so easily adaptable to face, edge and end-grain depending on what you have to work with. I think Steve's video is worthy of a Golden Globe award in the woodworker's category.

Great video!!! I'm really excited to try making one! I checked out your online course and I think it's going to be my birthday present to myself! I can't think of a better way to begin my 40's than having the knowledge of wood working! Best part is my Dad has tons of tools, he's just not much of a teacher, so I'm super excited to finally learn how to put them all to use! The ideas for projects keep growing by the second! Lol, if lumber wasn't 100 dollars a 2×4 it would be even more incredible, ha! ;) But that's not going to stop me, there's always a way to find lumber someone doesn't want anymore, I'll make it work!

I just finished my first one! Really love the look of it. Run into some issues so only one side of the board is the nice usable side, so ill put the little feet on it. I'll make more in future but will wait until I have planner; one of the boards I bought was different thickness and I had hard time getting them same size. Pros like you would have no problem doing this without planner, but I'm not quite at that skill level.

This video, and the great software developed by JS, provided me with the confidence to go for it. I will probably use the same design as yours as it seems quite do-able. I’m 41 grew up with very little positive male roll models and spent my teens and twenty’s doing stupid things. Love this channel!! If I can add anything -- skip the feet, just throw a damp paper towel (or regular kitchen towel) underneath your cutting boards when you use them. will keep them from sliding around. Thanks Steve for giving me fuel for my new passion.

Great information. I’m new to woodworking and have been watching lots of your shows. I’ve found them easy to follow and understand. Thanks for your knowledge. One step that I heard would help on cutting boards is to use a paint scraper to scrape off the glue before it’s completely dry or before you sand to remove the squeeze out and make it easier to sand. Another trick I learned is to spray your board with water after it is all sanded and ready to apply mineral oil. Before you apply the mineral oil, spray with water and let dry and any fibers that didn’t get sander will rise and you can now sand that smoother and remove those fibers so they done show up later during use. What do you think ?🤔

Lovely cutting board, and it looks like a fun afternoon project. Was just talking to my husband about getting a jump on holiday gifts...everyone would love these. Here's a ckeaning tip, for really stubborn smells, rinse with cold water and try rubbing the flat of a stainless steel blade against the wood. (This also works for your hands) for things stuck on your cutting board, don't use green scratchy pads! Instead, liberally spread some coarse (kosher) salt on your board, cut a lemon in half to use as your scrub brush. If that doesn't work, use the rest of the lemon and make a Whiskey sour.
