This week will mark the end of an era for Edmonton's CFL team, which has been community owned throughout its 75-year existence. Larry Thompson will be announced as Elks owner this week. TSN Football Insider Dave Naylor has more.
As a Lions fan, I hope that Edmonton has found an owner half as a good as we now have with Amar Doman. He has absolutely revitalized the game in this town and we know how much work now has to be done in Edmonton. I wish you the best of luck!
In my opinion, the first thing they need to do is restore the original name of the team. I don't know a single indigenous Canadian who disliked or was offended by names like "Braves" or "Blackhawks" or "Redskins" or "Eskimos". These were names chosen _not_ to ridicule, but as tokens of fierceness and respect. Surely there are some who object but no, it seems primarily the white wokesters who demand that everyone else share their sentiment of "guilt" and outrage over manufactured triggers. History is what it is, and the Edmonton football club did not choose the name "Eskimos" to ridicule a people; no they chose it out of respect for the indefatigable spirit of courage and hardiness of that people.
My hometown team died the day they changed the name. I’ll never go to another game and my Father was a season ticket holder for 40 years, and he too was disgusted by the woke change. RIP Eskimos
You care more about the old name than the name of your city? The Edmonton part of the team name should be what you support. So you would rather them leave Edmonton if it meant keeping the old name? I honestly don't understand lol. RIP your team and city loyalty.

Community owned hahah well the Elks had a very hard time listening to the fans. Go woke go broke! Im happy with this new change. I just hope they set this team back to normal again. Change the name back, and listen to the fans for once.
Never change sports names no matter what some woke bureaucrat or politician demands. The eskimos for decades were considered one of the most iconic franchises in the cfl. Since the name change they are now bargain basement retreads with no history. Good luck in trying to revive them. Elks really!

You can name a team after humans and people act offended but I dont think people are worth the trhouble. If you name your team after a animal nobody is offended though. I doubt Eskimos and inuits are really offended by this, this is stupid. They should always be called the Edmonton Eskimos.
Not sure why they didn rename them the " Edskimos" or the "Edskins". Nothing controversial about either of those two names! 😘 Edmonton's team hasn't just been bad the last few years, they've been bad most of the last two or more decades. It's a deep, deep hole they have to climb out of.
If it were symbolic. Than the correct na,e would be Bison. This is the Bison country. Elk island National park, full of plains/woods bison. Or something with Gold from gold rush.
This just in lol the new owner who is a local guy wants to change the name back to Eskimos. Was talked about this morning on radio sport talk with Morley Scott. Hope so.
The community board that ran the Eskimo football club successfully for so many years made some horrendous decisions to bankrupt and ruin this team starting with Tillman,not resigning Ricky Ray, Rhodes,Preston,Chui, covid,Name change ,all disasters. New owner apparently has taken over. Will have to spend some money to reinvent the club on and off the field.l would change the name back to Eskimos myself, screw the woke crowd and the board who buckled unnecessarily to change name from a few non football fans who wanted to stir things up. One woke detracter author and indiinginous woman even wrote a book called 'Eskimo Pie" what hypocricy lol lf the new owner doesn,t change name back to Eskimo, pick a new name because the elk name has not been popular from the start and was supposedly picked by the fans, which it wasn't. Lastly keep Tre Ford as your Qb please, he has proven to be a young exiting leader that should stay here along with alot of other quality players they have on their roster. Do these things and the fans will come back,don,t spend any money to improve and the fans will stay away and 2 maybe 3 years tops we will be looking for another owner, maybe even folding and leaving the city all together, which would be a shame. I started going to Eskimo games in 1969 at Clarke stadium. And was a season ticket holder for about 30 years . Stopped going when covid hit and really hope the new owner makes it work.

The Edmonton Eskimos were winners till they changed there name to Elks cursing themselves THE ESKIMOS WERE WINNERS NOW LOOSERS RETURN TO THE ESKIMOS AND WINNER WILL BE YOUR PATH I CURSED THEM FOR CHANGING THE NAME THEY STOPPED WINNING FROM THAT DAY FORWARD TO CURRENT RETURN NAME CURSE REMOVED THE EDMONTON ESKIMOS WAS A RESPECTFUL NAME HONOURING THE ESKIMO PEOPLE 😢
