As an avid Stars fan who lived this....a very well-done, even-handed and comprehensive video. I had never seen the video before, of Stars players reacting to the Edmonton goal. One thing I would add. The March 1999 memo clarifying the crease rule was due to an embarrassing play that had been ruled illegal. On the play a player skates in on a breakaway at a sharp angle. He skates directly through the crease with the puck entirely in his control, a fabulous moving pulling the goalie away, opening up a giant yawning open net and slotting it upstairs for a spectacular goal. But....his skate was in the crease when he shot it. The puck was outside. It was absurd to not count this goal, but the rule was clear and offered no interpretation. That's why the league sent the memo out. It was rare to change a rule in the middle of the season but this goal made it's absurdity obvious. Had that goal not occurred Hull's goal is probably disallowed.

Except it is wrong. Kicking the puck does not transfer possession. Written rule in the NHL. Hull never had possession of the puck until we shot it in the net. So he was in the crease twice while not having active possession by NHL rules. His foot was in the crease twice before he had possession and finally shot the puck in. The video is great, but the explanation of the rule at the end is inherently false based on the rules at the time. Kicking a puck does not count as possession.

If I may add some of the story… I was a reporter at the (infamous) 1999 Draft in Boston. On the day of the draft, I found Scotty Bowman (then coach of my Red Wings) just standing alone, so I approached him - and we had about a 20 min one-on-one. He told me that the GMs had a conference call earlier that morning (which I believe was just a few days after ‘the goal’) where it was explained to him and the others on the call that a worker at the Aud opened the gates for the media to come on the ice just 8 seconds after the goal was scored, and that played a big part in why the refs refused to do a review of the goal, and that the league did apologize to the Sabres. Also, evidently Lindy Ruff practically kicked in the refs dressing room door trying to get them to review the goal. One more interesting point: it was widely reported - and is still lore - that Derian Hatcher of that 1999 Stars team was the first American-born captain to lead his team to the Cup. This is only partially true. While in the NHL era, starting in 1917, Hatcher is indeed the first. However, in 1915, the Vancouver Millionaires won the Cup (still the city’s only Cup win) and the team was led by Si Griffis, their Captain who was raised in Rat Portage, Ontario… but he was actually born in Onaga, Kansas, making him the first US-born Captain of a Cup winning team. (FWIW, I wrote to the HHOF about this several times with no response)

I watched this game live on TV when I was in high school. I wanted the Stars to win largely because of Modano and Hull, but always though that while "conceptually" the Hull goal was OK, it was still outside of the letter of the law and thus shouldn't have stood. I'm pretty sure I never heard about the NHL memo from earlier that season, even in subsequent years, but after reading it, the league's "halfass" justification doesn't look so bad, anymore. In fact, that little skate-kick to his own stick by Hull does justify "possession" of the puck, and according to the NHL memo, it's a good goal. I know that isn't going to matter to Sabres fans, but I feel like there is finally some clarity about that series now that I've seen the actual wording of the pre-playoffs memo.

I relate it more to the "distinct kicking motions" that seem to go 50/50 either way, as they're both more directly related to a goal. @joshuaneal7552
@joshuaneal7552 21 день назад
@@tomblade If you're in ahead of the play, you're in ahead of the play. How do you _actually_ measure offside? How many inches (how many millimeters) is no longer "close enough"? A rule like offside SHOULD not and CANNOT be subjective. The crease rule WAS dumb. Offside is NOT. Are you for getting rid of offside? If so, then your argument is understandable. But if you agree with keeping offside a rule, then you can't be all "close enough" about it. It's no different than "everyone's a winner." A rule is a rule. While the crease rule was dumb, at the time, it should have been enforced as is. However, I've heard the explanation that Hull had control, then stepped out, kept possesion, then stepped back in, and that the league had already sent a memo clarifying that that was within the rules, so it looks like a good goal to me. I've defended Hull on this for a quarter century. If the league was being dishonest to protect itself, then that sucks. If they were being accurate and truthful, then that's good. I just want to see a fair game. In my opinion, winning unfairly is a far worse feeling than losing fairly, as the game itself is bigger than anyone else.

It's so wild that the league didn't make that memo tweaking the rule public... What is the possible rationale to not letting the fans know when any rule has been tweaked, let alone the most controversial rule? As someone who lives in Buffalo, it's not just the skate in the crease, its the fact that to this day, the only professional sports team to win a championship for our city is our Buffalo Bandits. A lacrosse team. We had an NBA team, the Buffalo Braves that left the city in 1978. We also never had a MLB team. Therefore, the only sports teams that could win a major championship are the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres. We don't have the luxury of other big cities having 4 different teams competing for that glorious victory in sports. That's the major reason this day in Sabres history haunts us to this day. We were this close, and the dreams of a championship parade stick with us to this day.

I don't religiously watch hockey videos but this was really good! My next paragraph has some loosely actual things related to the video. The rest is just me talking personal thoughts of a couple of teams. I just dumped all that crap below. So be warned, you might strain your eyes and brains. I get as far as the Blackhawks with it.. Those Stars and Sabres jerseys, man.. In the arguably most fun period of hockey, with the most entertaining goalies. I'm not native to NA so I always picked a team I like based on the players I liked in the NHL. On that period, it was the Sabres because of Hasek. Then after a few-year break of watching the NHL, I started to like the Blackhawks. It was around the time when Kane and Toews started playing. I still root for the Blackhawks, but I enjoy watching the Sabres and Stars. Another big one for me in the '90s was the Avalanche. I love them nowadays as well, they have Rantanen from my home country and has the same last name as I do. And he is gooood. Obviously not the only reason though. Another off topic remark: I hope the Blackhawks dig their way out of the mudpuddle they soaked and stirred, to grow to be a stronger team. There are pieces of a puzzle with lots of unfitting shapes and sizes. I hope they get one sharp boxcutter, which would even out the whole picture and the spaces between. They have the big piece on the center, which they can move around a bit, but the corners, sides and spaces between all that need some serious thought as well as trying, failing and getting better. The failing part preferably being the less frequent repetition of the aforementioned ones for the upcoming years. Lots of rambling about different teams and players, but that concludes my personal experience as an enjoyer of the sport.

As a Sabres fan this still hurts but being somehow honest and realistic with not only focussing on the skate in the crease: , and believe me that it takes a lot of effort, high blood pressure and getting back my subscrbtion on suicide watch….. This goal also shows how smart, strong and sneaky Hull was as a player. He evades , i think it was Holzingers check perfectly, gets himself back in position, shoves the puck with his skate to his stick and slides it in. I think a well executed bodycheck would got Hull down on the ice or out of balance enough to clear the puck out. But besides that: Skate in the crease: check Advantage of skate in the crease: check No goal: 300% check * taking my valium again now

Honestly i love that they took it away. Its more skill. Sometimes teams miss smokes in pro play too and you see good players like donk take advantage of those situations (i just recall a miss smoke donk clip as an example). We need more skill gap in the game and better anti cheat. Knowing that you just set up a keybind and youll never miss a smoke was stupid especially for the complicated ones. Like you said jump throws are not hard and there is no skybox. Somebody will cook up some smoke that is easier at some point, the whole beauty of the game is how the meta evolves.

Played Junior A level hockey and triple A before that. 20 years i played. At the end of the day its the officials decision. Yes his foot was in the crease but Hasek had all the room in the world and fumbled the puck while it was still in view of an official. If the puck isnt dead and an official can see it even if no one else can its still live.
