I can’t believe Larian Studios made BG3, changing my brain chemistry forever, then dipped. Kind of iconic. I can understand not making BG4, though I am sad we won’t be getting any expansions or DLC. I’m curious what they’ll make next.
Just a thought but maybe Larian are using a bit of semantics here by saying no more Baldurs Gate...not saying its so but maybe Icewind Dale Waterdeep or Neverwinter?? or even a game about a certain dark elf if the rights can be resolved(unlikely though)
Considering that BG3 was really Divinity: Original Sin 3 with a D&D skin, what Larian proved is that their system can be applied to anything, so I'd figure every company in the RPG space will be knocking at their door. I could see Pathfinder, something in the Critical Role world using Daggerheart, something sci-fi, or even (be still my heart) Call of Cthulhu. Although unfortunately my ultimate dream of them making a Planescape game is now dashed...
Booksandlala has videos where she does first chapter reading vlogs and she ranks them out of intrigue, plot etc. Something similar can be so much fun in fantasy
The Lego D&D thing is actually a really good point. People put so much time, money, glue, sweat, paint, blood, and tears into making these super complex maps and figurines. And sure, some might feel like LEGO is too colourful and cheerful for the game they're running, but those people can stick with the high quality plastic minis and realistic terrain. But as a quick and simple way of setting up, taking apart, transporting, and running combat you'd think it'd be way more popular (most of the time me and my group are using pieces from an old chess set and bits and pieces lying around anyway so have a mini that even remotely resembles the enemy would be a step up). You could even take the monsters and people apart in real-time to simulate damage.
I switched from miniatures to Lego about six months ago. It started with me using plates to represent spaces instead of drawing on and cleaning a map, and then progressed to making kitting out mini-figs for each PC. It's great and I love the customization. ...also it further fuels my Lego habit.
John Gwynne was one of the authors who got me into writing fantasy, so I'm happy as can be to see Bloodsworn completed, but more than anything, I wish him and his family all the best after everything they've gone through.
yessss or alternatively their own thing thats very discworld inspired? i think just heavy inspired wit hwhat the heck else they want to make would be better than a discroeld game,
As a fan of Larian's Divinity series, I'm actually really excited by this announcement. The major benefit of the BG license was the massive resources it allowed them to put towards the game. But outside of that, a lot of the D&D mechanics in the game felt to me like regressions from where Larian was with Divinity:OS2 (in particular the spellcasting system). So I'm hoping that this leaves Larian in a position to make a game as ambitious (or nearly as ambitious) as BG3, but with the creative freedom of their own IP.
Divinity is a ap based system like old fallout games. It is super easy to game much more so than bg3. Im replaying dos2 and it's worse than I remembered. Literally nothing gets a chance to make a move before I kill everyone with my rogue lol. And they really over did it with the ground effects I'm glad it got pulled back for bg3. But yeah idgaf about the bg franchise and its always been about larian and their rpgs. It's great that they learned a bunch of things and made a bunch of money and now they can do a better dos2 with a tighter system over a longer development cycle.
I like the big news at the front because sometimes I don't have time to search the video for the story I'm most interested in. Having it at the front let me get to that and then I just stuck around for the rest of it, so it worked for me
I wasn't surprised that Larian studios isn't planning on BG3 DLC or BG4. Swen Vincke has been saying this very thing since the game officially released on PC months and months ago. I didn't expect the studio would change their stance on that. D&D has a limited rule set, which can be limiting for a video game developer (sorcery points for example, stumped them for a while haha). I don't blame them for wanting to move on to something where they can go wild with their magic systems, etc.
11:52 There was something like this Lego did a couple of years ago called Heroica. It was under their Lego games brand, where they released a number of board games made from Lego. Heroica had a few sets released, which could be connected together to form one giant 'game board'.
I picked up The Shadow of the Gods about a month ago and have been loving it a lot so far. Heart goes out to his family and I will check out the rest of the trilogy
About the new video idea at 00:47: great thinking. To be honest it's something I already do on my own as a reader (and Sanderson also has been doing that for the Secret Projects) and it's brilliant to help readers decide if they buy said book. Plus, helping fellow artists is great, Daniel!
I love the idea of reading the first chapter of a book to see if you want to keep going. It would also help me find some new books/series to read. You have exposed me to a lot of great authors and I'm looking forward to more of your recommendations!
Brandy Sandy always said that he wanted to extend the Cosmere authentically into other mediums. Larian doing something with stormlight archive’s Roshar after stormlight 5 would be incredible.
The chapter 1 idea is pretty cool! I hope it'll be a combo of 2-5 books with you picking a book to finish at the end of the video. That way if we choose we can read it with you
I like the "First Chapter" series idea. Personally, I prefer to read at least the first three chapters before I decide whether to continue or set the book aside, but for the purposes of your channel, doing first chapters sounds like a good idea. You could also do related videos like comparison breakdowns between books where you elaborate on what did or didn't work for you in each, how you might have changed things, etc. Could be useful for aspiring authors to see that sort of analytical video on how to construct opening chapters, but that might be getting too labor intensive. I dunno.
As far as larian go, i am really exited to see them do something original. I think they have so much talent to make something incredible within their niche
As soon as I saw the cover, I went, '....she has no reflection, that's inaccurate marketing!', and then I waited for Daniel to point that out. Didn't notice the bird's lack of reflection, though, good catch! Now I'm not sure whether I'm more excited for this, or The God and The Gumiho.
I like this new video idea, because I too do not have a whole lot of time to look into books I might be into reading so it could actually be helpful getting me to pick up more books again.
I would really enjoy that first chapter series. I often don't watch the full reviews in case I want to read that book later, but I could definitely watch first chapter and not have that problem
I think Chapter 1 videos is an awesome idea! Great way for you and us to get introduced to books without too much of a time commitment or fear of spoilers.
Seconding the "chapter one" series! As an audiobook listener struggling to get back into reading, that sounds like a great thing to have on in the background while I work!
Really surprised we're only now getting a Lego DnD set, 12:04 my reaction was pretty much the same as yours 😂seems like the perfect pairing. Also the chapter one idea sounds like a great series!
I run a campaign for my kids using Lego's as the set and minis. It's a blast! It takes place on the island of Brickanthia and I have endless fun building in preparation for the next session. It's a good way to put all my classic castle sets to use!
I love the TBR chapter one reading idea! It will be especially interesting if you find the chapter compelling but myself or the audience does not and why! Could be really cool.
The making of BG3 has gotten Larian a lot of trust as a studio from the audience (myself included) so I’m definitely eager to see what direction they decide to go for their next project.
I’d actually love to see larian do their own thing. I think there is so much space in gaming to create worlds in such a different way than books or movies can. I’d love to see what they could cook up on their own. Honestly them splitting with dnd to me is probably due to licensing issues so they’ll do something with a new rule set rather than a new world/ip most likely.
With the new video idea I like the idea but maybe extend it to 2 chapters if the book has multiple POVs to get a sense of how the style changes, if at all, with the new characters. Could be a hook you miss in the first POV
I expect Larian to do their own thing next. They've always had a tremendous amount of talent and the only reason there were not lots of eyes on their original games is that people hadn't heard of them. They are a big dog now and I think that they are interested in competing with the other big dogs. I'm really excited to see where they go
Let's not kid ourselves larian and obsidian brought back the arpg for modern gamers. Without Divinity and pathfinder bg3 wouldn't have happened the way it did.
The Chapter One read throughs sounds very interesting! Definitely one I would watch. I respect Larian making the game they wanted to make, told the story they wanted to tell, and not wanting to add anything that might mess that up or bring down the experience. I think they did exactly what they set out to do in a way that is not really seen much anymore in the video game landscape; so deep respect, and can't wait to see what you tackle next! As for new worlds to conquer: Surprise me!
I did D&D scenarios with mini-figs from the original yellow castle set in 1981. The Venn overlap of RPG players and Lego is something close to a circle. It's about time they finally recognized this obvious tie-in.
I'm super into the Chapter 1 idea. I also like the idea of Larina moving onto other things. They did what is arguably a perfect game with BG3. Now let's see what else they can give us
Daniel, you are so based. I'm not a massive Brian Lee Durfee fan but I enjoy his videos a lot and plan to read his books. I saw that post from Mike Books Reviews and immediately prayed for him. I really hope Brian makes a full recovery because he is such a good dude from what I know. Anyways, I really think it's awesome you mentioned it and brought some attention to it. Thank you.
I agree, it’s exciting to think what Larian might do next now that they’re moving away from D&D, but it’s a shame we won’t be seeing any more of BG3’s incredible characters. It’s a powerful move in this age of games as live service, to create an incredible game, release patches to make it the best version of itself it can possibly be, and then just leave it at that - but I still would have liked to go on more adventures with Shadowheart, Karlach, Astarion and all the rest.
Love the chapter 1 series idea. A friend and I will sometimes go through bookstores and read just the first sentence of mystery and horror books and use that as our criteria for which to read, it’s a great time. Doing a full chapter seems still fun and more reasonable
struggling to say strongly enough to the screen, I feel you on that one, not sure if its a dyslexic thing or if we both just have slightly faulty brains, but I'm here for it :)
In regards to the Chapter 1 idea, I thiink would be great. I've been wanting to get into ready some indie published books and i think this would be a great way of getting a lot of focus on these books
somethine I appreciate in this video, you inserting the correct voice recording for word mistakes. its really appreciated coming from someone who usually just listens to news youtube videos
