Oda has this weird thing where people in flahsbacks go trough the most horrific stuff and die while in the present they all miraculously survive. At least in the early Episodes. it will get better later on

i always figured that cos luffy is rubber, getting run through like that isnt nearly as damaging for him as for other people, as his skin would mostly stretch instead of tear. he'd still obviously have a hole in him and thats terrible, but itd be much smaller than the full size hole most other people would get from it. but thats just a guess in an anime where people survive all kinds of ludicrous shit.

When it comes to pervy characters / Fan Service, etc., like it or not it IS a prevalent trope in shonen manga (And Anime a lot of times likes to dial it up to 11) and usually they are meant to be just fun visuals and nothing more. Remember Shonen is for early teenage boys just like American Comic books have girls in skin tight outfits with big boobs and curves, and guys who are jacked beyond reason. However One Piece does two things different! One that is subtle at first. The other, the other is just not at all subtle. But still commendable in my opinion 1. Oda likes to take the trope and send it to some ridiculous (yet still logical conclusion) where the actual fan service or pervy characters actions have a tangible affect on the plot in varying degrees 2. Oda just REALLY appreciates boobs, and butts (He said in a very recent SBS* that "I researched how to draw sexy buttocks, and I became able to draw the buttocks well. After that, it became fun to draw the buttocks, and the number of butt angles increased! Drawing is fun!" ) You can't say the man isn't honest about what he likes. *SBS for volume 106 TL/DR Oda cooks different

Yeah the strawhats needing two different methods of fast travel to get back to the plot is very silly, but I imagine "the crew ride a giant crab" and "Karoo is part of a unit actually, so the crew can be a chocobo calvary for a bit" were two good visuals Oda couldn't give up on so he just used both. Crocodile is only one of many Big Bads in the series, but he looms large in the mind even for uptodate audience, if for no other reason than piercing through Luffy's sense of invincibility effortlessly. It's curious that you audibly question why Ms. All Sunday would be so helpful at times going back to before Little Garden, say but she killed Igaram, and then the story reveals he is fact alive, despite seemingly being blown up. I say curious, because most reactors just call BS straight up on his survival without even noticing Nico Robin's two faced nature, so you got further than most! To complete the logical chain, in ep 67, before the big explosion you see hands popping up very briefly-- at the time you have no context for the visual, but you've seen her powers at work. So at the initial devil fruit reveal, the audience might say "oh that's how she blew up the ship remotely" while with Igaram's survival the reveal becomes "oh she rescued him from the explosion"

Very, very few people die in One Piece, partly because it's still a kid's show, but also because... there's just this thing in Japanese story-telling, death is just not really that common. The threat of death is always around, but not death itself.
