I remember hearing this on the radio while riding along with my mom in an open top Willys Jeep (not the military model but very similar). Early 60's, and the song is still a Classic.
Already 50 years ago when I was in middle school It was a pop song playing through the school speakers during lunchtime. At the time, I didn't know what it meant and I only listened to music. Now, at the point where I know the meaning and can memorize it and sing along I found out that this song sang the sorrow of losing precious people I fell in love with this song even more I would like to express my gratitude to the singer who sang such a great song already a long time ago
The morning after I learned my best friend was no longer in this world, I looked out the window at the sky. Looking from side to side, I realized I couldn't ever find her in this world again . For she shared my soul. She was my Guardian Angel. No one can have the Special place in my heart that belongs to Angel ❤
I’d love to say it will stop hurting, but that’s not quite true. Over time you just become more adept at dealing with it, so in that respect it gets easier. However, I have no doubt she is watching over you. And in a hundred different ways, she is letting you know this. Just look for them. Maybe a song you both loved comes on the radio the same time you are thinking of her. Or a butterfly comes flitting by unexpectedly, etc. God knows your pain and I believe offers these little happenings to strengthen you both and to ease bereavement.
My goodness......how I cried to this song when a breakup happened in HS. mom kept saying it's not the end of the world. Than! I would hear this song.. isn't it precious ..innocent times ? 💕.
I worked with Skeeter's husband, on the railroad, on the road out of covington Ky. in the early 70's. I just couldn't grasp that she was a world famous singer and I was talking to her husband about the train trip we had ahead of us. I just found it wild that he was not in nashville enjoying the high life!!
I just had to jump in here Terry Adams. That story is 100% FACT! My wife is from Covington Kentucky and Through her marriage to her first husband, Skeeter Davis ended up being my wife's cousin-in-law(if there is such a thing)! She knew Miss Davis very well and even got to hear Miss Davis sing this song at a family function. When I saw Covington Ky in your comment, I just had to chime in! Miss Davis' will ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED for that song! Such a BEAUTIFUL young lady who sang a BEAUTIFUL SONG. RIP SKEETER DAVIS.
@@russ5024, that sounds like a typical biography. I think that we both agree that regardless of who is telling the truth, Skeeter Davis had a very good voice. It reminds me of Liberace's biography. He NEVER admitted that he was gay or had HIV. He went as far as to deny both statements. It's always fun to read a Biography of someone and then the other party involved comes out with "THEIR VERSION" of the story. Somewhere in the middle is the truth. That old saying still holds true today. "It takes two people to make a marriage but only one to break it".
Great song! How many people have had this emotion? Heartbreak in love is so devastating, but there is forever a great hope in Christ, who will wipe away every tear.
Wow. Was watching the flight attendant and this came on. I remember this song as a very young child. What a beautiful song. Timeless. For all that lost a loved one, please remember that they have passed on to a whole other world. That's the promise we have in Jesus. There are no tears in heaven. Till we all meet again.
Why does the sun go on shining Why does the sea rush to shore Don't they know it's the end of the world 'Cause You don't love me anymore, Yes Why do the birds go on singing Why do the stars glow above Don't they know it's the end of the world It ended when I lost your love I wake up in the mornin' and I wonder Why everythings the same as it was I can't understand, No I can't understand How life goes on the way it does Why does my heart go on beating Why do these eyes of mine cry Don't they know it's the end of the world It ended when you said goodbye Don't they know it's the end of the world It ended when you said goodbye Goodbye
Recorded: June 8, 1962. Skeeter Davis (1931-2004) became incapacitated by her breast cancer, which had metastasized. The following year, she made her final performance at the Grand Ole Opry, performing "The End of the World." She died of breast cancer in a Nashville, Tennessee, hospice on September 19, 2004, aged 72.
Covid made me stop thinking of this as a love song, and more of a warning! It's now June 2021, I can go back to hearing a love song! Welcome back! Be safe!
Still a warning. The world is sick in more ways than one. COVID, climate change, guns and insanity. Hopefully the darkest hour before the dawn- still gotta have hope, right?....
HEY, BABE, THEY WILL NEVER NEVER BE, ANOTHER ONE, LIKE U. NOOOO, I'LL NEVER LOVE, NO ONE, LIKE U. THIS IS MY FINIAL WORDS. HEY, BABE, KNOW MATTER, HOW MANY TRIES, REMEMBER, I WILL GO ON, BUT KNOW ONE WILL HAVE THAT SPECIAL SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART, BUT U, AND ONLY U.
Such a beautiful song and voice, It is also worth listening to Emily Linge who was 14 when she sang this(,she has just celebrated her 15 th birthday, beautiful piano playing too.
My Rainy left me to go to Heaven 6 years ago. The end of my world as I knew it. 39 years together was not enough. Someday we'll be back together again.

Clearly a country song, but it is so powerful that it cannot be contained by a genre. Sylvia Dee wrote the lyrics. She was deeply affected by the death of her father and I think that although on the surface the song is about a romantic break up, it communicates that deeper sorrow that comes with loosing a loved one through death. I once read the widow exclaimed in the middle of her grief, that the loss of her husband meant “the end of the world.”
@scottweisel3640 : I remember listening to this song as a young teen when it first came out. And I have been listening to it in my memory often all the years since. It's one of my favorites because of its lovely melody, innocence and sweetness and then there's that name - Skeeter. I did not know the story behind the song. Thank you so much for sharing that. Did you grow up about the same time or do you just have good taste as a younger man?
Russian soldiers with human hearts, please return to Russia. Stop fighting in Ukraine. Myanmar's army, don't crack down on the people by military force. Please stop all attacks. Do not use military force. No more. Are you not children of humans? The moment I heard this song, tears flowed and I bewailed. Thank you for uploading a wonderful song. All people who lost loving men in wars, please live.
The End of the World Skeeter Davis Why does the sun go on shining? Why does the sea rush to shore? Don't they know it's the end of the world? 'Cause you don't love me any more Why do the birds go on singing? Why do the stars glow above? Don't they know it's the end of the world? It ended when I lost your love I wake-up in the morning, and I wonder Why everything's the same as it was I can't understand, no, I can't understand How life goes on the way it does Why does my heart go on beating? Why do these eyes of mine cry? Don't they know it's the end of the world? It ended when you said, "Good-bye" Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm (Why do these eyes of mine cry?) Mmm, mmm, mmm Don't they know it's the end of the world? It ended when you said, "Good-bye"
Why pretend to love someone when they're only an after thought and never a priority? Bring it on, its already the end of the world for people in this position........
