End Of UK Steel Industry? TATA Steel Axes 3000 Jobs In Port Talbot

Steelworkers, deeply affected by the decision to cut numerous jobs at Port Talbot, have expressed concerns that such massive layoffs could lead to an economic catastrophe, transforming the once prosperous region into a ghost town.
Unions are pointing fingers at the Conservatives, accusing them of providing substantial financial support to Tata Steel, the owners of the site, only to witness the elimination of nearly 3,000 positions despite extensive efforts to preserve the jobs. The government is contributing to the £1.25 billion expense of constructing a more environmentally friendly electric arc furnace at Port Talbot in South Wales.
Nick De Bois speaks with editor at Manufacturing TV, Nick Peters.

Well here's a brief one-liner summary. TATA Steel (world's one of the biggest and the best steel manufacturers) was forced to spend $3.5 bn. (to achieve net zero carbon emissions target of EU/uk, by shutting down all the blast furnaces and bringing in Electric furnace) at a loss making plant in Britain (obviously Tata refused and demanded "at least" half of the burden to be bear by the govt., cuz it was their aspirations/target not company's) but Britain is crumbling nowadays they offered only $500mn. TATA with a heavy disappointment accepted as both UK and Indian authorities were begging them not to sell the plant (china might buy). So to achieve UK/EU target 🎯 they did this. As electrical furnaces require very few people.

Sad as it is Word has it that Tata was Haemorrhageing one million quid a day,no company can continue operating with costs like that,that's it british industry is Foreign owned they are not under any obligation to keep making steel in the UK and can pull out any time they wish, its a decision. made, rightly or wrongly on cost.

I see everyone saying "our own steel plant" when Tata steel is an Indian company, UK's steel industry is not self reliant it already depends on foreign countries, Countries like India, USA, China & Japan are called self reliant in steel manufacturing

You will amazed how inter-dependent India and the UK are on each other. Any technology introduced in the UK gets mass produced in India while most of the UK commodities come from India. It's one of the best examples of how two countries working together while leaving their colonial past behind. Indians love their right hand driving layland buses and Britishers love their chicken tikka masala with basmati rice

The same thing is happening in Scunthorpe. The plan is to shut down the blast furnaces and build an electric arc furnace. Similar job losses. Chasing the WEF net zero carbon goals.

British heavy industry doesn't exist anymore. We have lost it to China.....Oh, and just to remind everyone, China are in the process of building a chain of coal fired power stations. This is devastating for the town of Port Talbot, for South Wales and the UK. Britain's net zero policy is already one of the lowest in the western World. Sunak and his his Indian pals are trying to have their way... but it won't end well.

We all know we are in this situation because the EU never took action on cheap Chinese steel dumping. Then after Brexit the expectation was that the UK will be able to stop China and revive the industry but it didn't! Tata clearly didn't want to have to axe any jobs. It is not their general policy to have people lose their jobs. Tata is run by a large moral compass with over 66% of their group shares being given to their charitable organisations and is considered the most trustworthy/reliable employer by many.

Why is the factory. Not making a profit ? Is it due to high energy costs and carbon taxes etc. How much high quality steel dowe buy in. Perhaps we could make Tata profitable . Retain the cheaper coal. Furnaces and make it all work as a business by supporting it. 3000 people on the dole will not be cheap. Has this been taken into account. Steel is in demand. We could make it work if you or get useless net zero.which this proves is potty and impossible.

Why are they going from gas & coal fired furnaces to electric? If you look into it, the energy requirements for both are not hugely different. Co2 emissions not much different. The UK government must put Net Zero pledge to a vote. People know nothing about the science ..in the case of Talbot maybe it just means fewer staff to pay. Also, many have said the quality of the steel is poorer ..

It's unbelievable, iron ore makes steel, these new electric furnaces you just feed it with scrapped steel, but with iron ore your making steel from scratch, it's always been like that, china use 633 billion tonnes of coal per year in their blast furnaces I just cannot see the point in closing blast furnaces when the likes of china just carry on as normal, I'm saying carbon emissions from making steel has to be put back for at least another 10,years, as we are going to be caught off guard if someone like china or Russia deem fit to start a war over Ukraine and same thing with China wanting Taiwan, so yes probably a up and coming world war not very far away, by the look of things, can't this government see that.

@iansmith788
@iansmith788 5 месяцев назад
What is your logic that this is in some way related to Brexit? Most of Port Talbots customers are in the U.K. this situation is complex but it is mainly caused by the Government imposing net zero changes too quickly without considering the impact on the workforce and their families, and the blast furnaces are aging equipment one of which needs rebuilding or replacement. There is also a problem of steel oversupply and dumping of Chinese and Indian steel affecting prices. However steel has many advantages in the automotive, aerospace and defence industries so strategically we should save an industry which we invented with the Bessemer converter.
