Steelworkers, deeply affected by the decision to cut numerous jobs at Port Talbot, have expressed concerns that such massive layoffs could lead to an economic catastrophe, transforming the once prosperous region into a ghost town.
Unions are pointing fingers at the Conservatives, accusing them of providing substantial financial support to Tata Steel, the owners of the site, only to witness the elimination of nearly 3,000 positions despite extensive efforts to preserve the jobs. The government is contributing to the £1.25 billion expense of constructing a more environmentally friendly electric arc furnace at Port Talbot in South Wales.
