India had been the world's center of steel production for more than 2000 years even uptil years after Britain arrived in India. And now once again, India is the world's 2nd largest steel maker making more steel than entire EU, and increasing capacity by 2030 to produce more steel than entire EU+USA combined. India will regain its spot as the world's center of steel once more. PLI scheme for specialty steels is already out. Fun fact: Professor Bhadesia, UK's foremost steel researcher, is also Indian origin and is funded by Tata. As for energy providers, Russia was EU's energy provider until they decided to engage in virtue signalling and started imported Russian oil refined in India instead of direct Russian oil refined in Russia. As a result, we may see India climb from spot 4 to 3 and replace Russia in terms of Total Oil Refinery Capacity. Good job EU lol. And even in the future, with India's massive push towards Green Hydrogen being led by Indian oil and gas giants like Reliance Industries, India might just be the EU's source of Green Hydrogen and Electrolyzers.

As an exiled Welshman for the past 57 years who once was very familiar with Steel Company of Wales/ British Steel/Corus/Tata I wish that were economically feasible. The situation is however that the Port Talbot plant is losing circa one million pounds per day and it would take a brave or foolish government to take on that. Ever since the 1970's I've watched sadly the decline of America's own steel industry to the point where it is a shadow of its former self. And that's without Brexit, and with the advantage of a large internal demand. There is a very large world over-capacity in the steel industry and Port Talbot has some severe disadvantages. All consumables, including coking coal and iron ore have to be imported. It's two remaining blast furnaces are dated. To give you an idea, the current modern Thyssen blast furnaces have hearth diameters of about 38 feet and the economics of iron and steel production begin there. I think there may be a strategic argument to be made, but sadly the economics are unavoidable.

The problem is, UK can not finance the same subsidies compared to the EU and global companies do and will prefer the EU market. UK can not compete with the EU. Brexit is a real mess for the British people.

No, you will find it was the uncontrolled unions at that time making our products uncompetitive. Maggie just stopped the rot by destroying the power of the unions, who were asking for more and more money for doing less and less. I was there on strike in 1979 with British Steel and saw it first hand. We were the sick man of Europe at that time.

Tata steel should just focus on getting that Superbaninite production line to India.
