And yet, in Poland (one of EU countries), fish is incredibly expensive and thus rarely end up in citizens diet. So we throw subsidiaries because of fishing limits no one observes, causing fish to be expensive commodity and to decrease citizens health in the process. In the end only fishing companies win, no one else. Or rather their shareholders, when fish is gone so are the companies. That's typical for money influenced political policies and has to be stopped.

This is a pertinent message. The issue of overfishing and overexploitation of our marine environment (and others) is massive. Something needs to be done, otherwise we'll shortly run out of fish entirely. I heard a relevant quote whilst I was studying marine biology. "So how then can we ensure stocks recover and fish sustainably? Don't."
@JoshJett
@JoshJett 11 лет назад
We talk a lot about this in my environmental science classes. Personally, when I fish recreationaly I only keep fish if we'll eat them that same day.
@MarkFletcher
@MarkFletcher 11 лет назад
Good practice! Mind you, sport fishing has a minuscule impact next to industrial scale extraction. By far the biggest issue is bycatch and quotas. You get the odd situations where a vessel has met its quota and has to chuck back good fish to avoid being fined. Or disposing of non-target fish because quotas have been exceeded or they just don't want it. Fish thrown back is usually dead, and the populations are getting hammered for nothing. We don't have a way of fishing selectively enough, and even if we did, how would we stop the older breeding populations being completely removed?
@JoshJett
@JoshJett 11 лет назад
Totally agree. I know recreational fishing is a drop in the bucket, and many recreational fish are not commercially harvested, but I feel so guilty if fish sits in the freezer unused. That being said, fish fried tge same day they are caught are sooo delicious. On a side note, have you ever seen Disney's "Oceans" (narrated by Pierce Brosnan)? It's one of our favorites; very well done documentary with a segment on bycatch.
@RoyMulder
@RoyMulder 11 лет назад
Mark Fletcher You highly underestimate just how many sports fishermen there are. Here in British Columbia they are finishing off the last of our rockfish stocks. These are fish with lifespans that can go up to 200 years. After spending the big bucks to go out salmon fishing, when they don't catch anything, they go fish out the local rockfish hole. It doesn't take long to wipe out a fish population when they can't reproduce fast enough to recover.
@MarkFletcher
@MarkFletcher 11 лет назад
Roy Mulder I take your point! There are obviously fish species that are more prone to this kind of pressure - I'm uk based so I must confess the majority of my fishing and marine knowledge is based on this side of the pond! Are there protections in place for the rockfish? I may be wrong, but I think the Americans take their sport fishing more seriously than us - so please forgive my ignorance of the pressures (not sarcastically, literally). I would guess that the sports fishermen are taking the larger, more interesting species, too... the ones with little to no commercial value? It reminds me of the plight of the orange roughy - cursed with being both delicious and easy to catch en-masse, it was nearly wiped out because in the early days of exploiting the fishery they didn't appreciate how long lived they are. I forget exactly, but I think they don't start breeding until they're at least 20 years old, so it's remarkably easy to be left with a severely impacted population. Thankfully they realised just in time and strong controls have allowed recovery whilst fishing more sustainably. There is hope in that regard! (So long as everyone is on board... It's all very well (for example) the UK having decent and strong fishing policy and controls if other European boats aren't playing by the same rules)

Just one more reason to take up vegetarianism. Take action, stop supporting the industry - stop consuming fish! At the very least the commercially 'produced' fish. And that's a crock of shit at the end, politicians aren't gonna do nothing - individuals have to wake up and take personal responsibility for planet earth - Stop acting as powerless idiots! We are responsible!!!

To anyone asking what the solution is - yes pressuring our politicians is very important but it also starts with us. The simplest thing to do is realise that we all need to limit our consumption of animal products (fish and meat included). Limiting yourself to 3 or 4 times a week is actually a much healthier diet, and this would dramatically help reducing the demand for these animal products. The reality at the moment is that many people think it is normal to have meat or fish 2 or 3 times a day, whereas this is historically fairly new in the history of our species.

Fourq Nouw yeah, because just stopping people from overeating is that easy. Besides, it won't work. Even if it were possible to stop people overeating it would only delay the problem. If we did that the population would just grow even more until we hit the limit again, but with more poverty. Scientifically speaking, if we can't control our own population there is no way out of this. But putting limits on fishing is a good start.

yet, the issue still lies with the populous. Support doesn't come from public opinion, support comes for lobbying, and monetary gain. We can scream all we want at those in power, but the world will never change until money is put on the back burner...
@laughingachilles
@laughingachilles 8 лет назад
No one wants to face the real problem, overpopulation. On a planet with limited resources you can't have infinite population growth. Either we sort this out humanely (limiting births, I'm not on about killing people) or nature will do it for us (famine, terrible diseases etc).
@Snakebloke
@Snakebloke 8 лет назад
Precisely what I've been saying for goodness knows how long...the population has more than tripled since the 1950s...hence, the increased consumption etc. If there were only 2 billion people on the planet, overfishing would be a non issue.
@laughingachilles
@laughingachilles 8 лет назад
Snakebloke In fairness the modernization of farming since the 1950s has allowed us to support more people. I think you could support 3 and maybe even 4 billion people without seriously damaging the environment when you consider the new clean technologies coming online and a focus on effective recycling. But I'm only arguing over the exact number with you, the important point as you say is the problems that overpopulation is causing. The sad thing is that when you raise this issue people will throw labels like "Nazi" at you, even though there is no mention of race, no mention of killing anyone etc.
@Snakebloke
@Snakebloke 8 лет назад
Laughing Achilles I've never been accused of being a 'Nazi' per se, but I have been attacked by devoutly religious people, who insist that 'God' intended for the planet to be in the state it is now...which is a theory that I cannot, and will not ever, comprehend...
@laughingachilles
@laughingachilles 8 лет назад
Snakebloke It depends which religion you're dealing with of course and even sects within individual religions. Christians will fall into two major groups on this issue, those who think that humans are the shepherds of the Earth and so we should look after it and the other group who are awaiting the end of the world and so think that it doesn't matter what we do. I'm an atheist so it's all bullshit in my eyes but within their belief system it's a logical position.

Overpopulation is not a problem by itself. Our stupid wasteful lifestyle is a problem. The example of shrimp fishing is a good example: to put the stupid shrimp somebodies posh table we kill 9 kg. of marine life. The same applies to other resources: water waste in agriculture, veggie waste in supermarket distribution, soil degradation by extensive agriculture. And many other ways we waste resources, just for the sake generating money. Money is generated by more attractive, good looking, exotic food that consumer craves. Global food production is not a belly problem after all, its the fancy taste problem. Limiting population will not help if people want to live american, wasteful lifestyle. We all have to become happy with local foods, smaller variety, all sourced sustainable. It is possible, if only governments cared about good laws and executing them.

The fact on shrimp trawling is incorrect... while other sea creatures are caught, the ratio is way off... prawns/shrimp are bottom feeders and very few fish are. If they really were catching so much 'waste' creatures, then it would not be economical. Oh, and most of the creatures they throw back actually survive! I agree over fishing is bad, but I dislike sensationalism of incorrect facts to drive a point.
@TheFalconfanatic
@TheFalconfanatic 11 лет назад
Andrew, I think you'd best double check your facts here. I can't speak to the ratio of prawns to bycatch, but the idea that the majority of bycatch tend to survive is definitely mistaken.
@AndrewClelland
@AndrewClelland 11 лет назад
James Edwards okay... not 'most', but 'many'... bycatch is very subjective if you read the reports... while there is a chance of catching fish in shrimp nets, it is very rare and accounts for a tiny portion of total catch (can be as low as 0.2%). It is true that fish may not survive being on deck, however approx 50% of unwanted crustaceans survive. You have to remember, these mortalities don't go to waste as the video suggests... they are consumed by other predators within a natural habitat. So a fish dies and this gives the opportunity for a bird or another fish to survive, and that is bad?

This sucks hard. This is what happens when money rules the world. As long as a country can make good profits from it, they don't care what the consequence is. There's a Japanese show I like that a couple of episodes had them say, "This fish is super rare! There's only 1% of this fish left. Let's go get some!" That's humanity for you, do things now, worry later. Fishers and hunters complain about lack of animals, but that doesn't stop them from depleting the population. Also people are lazy, time is money, they don't want to take the time to fish responsibly and catch only what they need.
@cbarker88

Man, this is a tough issue. The tipping point to reverse this on a global scale is huge. Its positive and great that some nations are trying to curb the supply, but business and profiteering literally do not allow a full reverse. As the middle class grows in developing countries, so will demand for fish (and meats), and we simply can't control the economies of nations outside of the EU. I was also shocked to learn that farmed fish uses so much of their non-farmed counterparts in production. Think I might pass on the smoked salmon for Christmas nibbles from now on.

@CherryDaviess
@CherryDaviess 7 лет назад
Those that fish for their job should look into other ways to make money. As for the people that rely on food, if it's a necessity, I think they must do what they must. But most people with access to this video are eating fish for the taste and not out of necessity. Without the fish, without the whales, there'll be no phytoplankton. And without the phytoplankton, there will be 50-80% less oxygen on earth. We can make fish tasting food out of plants like algae. With the technology available these days, it's possible to make food taste like an animal product without using nearly as many resources, and without taking lives. Look into Impossible Foods! However, the majority need to see the reason why before there can be a market for it. I recommend watching the film Cowspiracy, and searching for Seaspiracy on youtube.

Insanity I tell you! I wonder what this will eventually do to these animals and ultimately our bodies.

Jason Mackay you dont have to wonder anymore... there has been LOOTS of research in the subject and the result is mainly THAT IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE! as long as you provide the necessary essential fatty acids... to humans its even better in most cases

Perhaps you may want to add a caveat to your comment. "Closed-circuit" aquaculture might make some degree of sense. Viruses are a serious problem in open net cage salmon farming. Take the time to study Canadian scientists Dr. Kristi Miller or Dr. Alexandra Morton if you want to learn more. Other forms of aquaculture like harvesting wild caught tuna and putting them in pens to fatten them up totally remove all the reproductive ability of the fish. No sense in this form of aquaculture either.

Hello, I am a university student and I am doing a Digital Documentary Project. This project is just a homework and I will not upload it to any website, so Can I use your video in my individual project?? Cause I need to get explicit permission from the owner of the video before I use it in my homework. Thank you very much~

Many people in my country started fishing in recent years with the use of spear gun, they post what they catch in Instagram proudly they all do it. And it's a huge over fishing... Fishermen are noticing a decrease in fish and lobsters... Unfortunately there's no law to protect sea life, even if there is implementing it would cause a big problem to the people who over fish. Korean ships come to take everything in our sea. People need to be aware of this phenomenon and tragedy...

it's a supply and demand issue - stop eating so much fish (demand) and overfishing will naturally decrease. DUH! I gave up eating fish fucking ages ago

Aquaculture is the solution. When done correctly it is safe and sustainable. Look for certified, sustainable aquaculture products. And forget the idiots in Brussels. Look what they doing to terrestrial agriculture

90% of fish population is caught by %10 which are the comercial fishermen. We share the remaining 10% and yet some ignorant people blaim the spearfishermen for overfishing :)

Overpopulation and the world economic system are the real problem. Less people can enjoy the fruits of nature and have personal liberties when so many others need/want the same thing. The worst part is, nothing is really being done on any significant scale to rectify this. It would take revolutionary measures on the part of the most powerful countries in the world to fix this; and even some ethically questionable methods may be needed to actually bring us tangible results. This isn't just a problem with Europe's fish stocks either. It's the entire world.

How do we end overfishing? Become vegetarian. Simple solution to a complex problem. There is no reason to eat flesh when all of our protein needs can be successfully met by plants.

What a beautiful animation, you have to admit this. but as always, greenpeace specializes in useless figures: that many planes in a net. This is as if I said that shutting the tap while you brush your teeth is equivalent to 50 round trip to the moon on a train. Whatever, there is still a lot of misinformation: 5kg wildfish to get 1kg salmon in aquaculture?!? Inform yourself before you believe any figures from a well achieved animation... what a shame, Greenpeace's communication is disappointing!

Well, not eating endangered fish such as the blue fin tuna? And making politicians enforce quota's that scientists advise to restore the seas to an healthy amount of fish again.

Seriously extreme problems need seriously strong solutions: give the oceans a global break of as many years as it is necessary. Or the profiteers will simply destroy us.
@PieterKroon

Sure they are, if enough people demand it. Just you not eating fish is not going to make a change. It has to be enforced, because too many people won't stop eating it.
