Adam Bennetts & Zane Westwood share endless glides in Byron Bay on their surf foil hydrofoils! Footage by Ben Tayler Music by by Ryuichi Sakamoto - Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence (Double Touch Rework)
And that my friend is why I stopped surfing when I started foiling. It’s been nearly 4 years since I haven’t surfed after surfing for 20+ years (10 of those as a professional surfer). It’s really really really fun!
No shit, I'm loving it I need to up my game,I might be old but I'm on the live forever program, I just saw these dudes riding the tidal bore in South America, crazy 2023
I'll bet that jumping up and down can wear you out, I'd just bring a Roo (kangaroo?) .. This is only about the 6th video I've seen of these foils, never heard of this before this month. I initially thought they were motorized lol, absolutely amazing, this comment coming from an ancient kid that grew up surfing. This looks like such an improvement in so many ways, to what we used to do. I can't imagine why anyone is out in the water with a conventional surfboard after discovering these foils, so amazing.
@@misterbennetts That's cool, I guess that on the worst days, you can still get out, workout, and even though nothings breaking, catch some of the swells. That's one aspect that amazes me most, the fact that you can catch so many swells that you couldn't possibly catch on a conventional board, and on an average day, many of those will eventually break and give a fun ride.
Absolutely gorgeous, but let's be clear about the music: what you hear is a reworking of the main theme of Ryuichi Sakamoto's music for the movie, Mr Christmas Mr Lawrence. A sublime piece of music to begin with - all they did was add a beat. 'Double Touch' or whoever chose this needs to acknowledge their debt - it is mostly 'borrowed'.
Yes for sure, it’s a rework/remix, but what Double Touch did is make this beautiful song playable in a DJ set. The percussion and drums make the song ‘danceable’ without taking away from the original. I absolutely love it!
Was lucky enough to score this place during my holiday from NZ 25-29 December, what a run of swell we had, the local foilers were super friendly and absolutely ripped, particularly your goofy foot mate in the red wetsuit top on this vid..witnessed some rides from the lighthouse past the pass all the way to town, foiling heaven..
I ain't no surfer. Ex uk velodrome cyclist, 250 expert mx racer and jet ski racer but.. this foil thing has really grabbed my attention. We reside a lot in fuerteventura, canary Islands and this is all the rage in the North. I love it and fingers crossed I'm gonna have a bash shortly. Love watching this video. Mesmerising for me ❤. Thanks.
Thanks for watching. Man it’s so much fun. It’s a feeling like no other and I’m sure you won’t regret giving it a go. Be prepared for it to consume your entire life. It’s so addictive! 🤙🏼
Sydney bodysurfer here. I feel like my body is now old school! Beautiful location and footage, excellent production and totally inspiring to watch. Presuming you have been a surfer for some time, was it a tough transition? Does it feel like you work harder foiling than surfing? You probably get better heads up on the surf with the extra foot of height I'm guessing. Thanks Adam - I'm blown away. Cheers - Dave
Hi mate! Thanks for the kind words. Yeh I’ve surfed for 25+ years. It was definitely a tough transition; it’s really hard being in such a familiar environment but everything is so foreign. But then one day it all just clicks and then you have a bunch of ‘aha’ moments and you end up progressing through the learning process quite fast. So you get better pretty quickly. Definitely work way harder than in surfing, purely because you get so much ride time and you aren’t just limited to 1 wave per ride, it can take you through 5-10 waves and 3-5 mins at a time. I usually do between 500-1000 calories in a 1 hour session, depending on conditions. It’s truly mind blowing what’s possible with these things, it opens up every single body of water - waves or no waves! 🤙🏼
@@misterbennettsthese things are insane to me, absolutely mind blowing, the way you can keep going even when the wave is done is amazing, it must feel like you are gliding or flying above the water. I watched one of laird Hamilton s foiling sessions in big waves and it was unbelievable, just flying on the wave . I already have many hobbies, a family and a full time job so no time here, but are they expensive, I know the ones with engines are very very expensive
@@misterbennetts I'd have to simultaneously do the things I want to do before I die, as many of them would probably kill me! Just back from an "old-school" bodysurf here at Freshie (Sydney), but would have loved to have been foiling! Happy New Year and cheers - Dave
It seems that these would be fun surfing the wake of large ships. Especially ones traveling parallel to the coast. Tow out with a jet ski and have someone pick you up 10 miles down the coast.
Thanks! I’m on F-one foils and JS boards. This would never be possible on Axis. They are good for learning and going straight, but have no manoeuvrability at all. 🤙🏼
@@misterbennetts Cool, & Thank you for the reply! Yep, I'm just learning (at 54 yrs old pulled straight behind a boat) but look forward to some day being good enough to ride (small-ish) open waves in South Florida (US). Which size F-one wing are you on ?
It looks amazing and I'd love to try it (but I am a bit of a scardey-cat! -Is it hard learning to surf on foil hydrofoils? Can you get hurt easily (e.g. by the hydrofoil?)
It’s definitely a steep learning curve, but you do progress pretty quickly, especially if you can already surf. I haven’t surfed since I started foiling, which was nearly 4 years ago!
@@misterbennetts that foil looks amazing really like your surf with it super smooth at the same time radical turns 😎 Nice video as usual, cannot wait to try that foil
Guy has skills but these things are scary as hell around other surfers. I had an experienced foil'r shoot his rig at me when me made a mistake. Also, my buddy here on Kauai cut his throat in the white water of a outer reef wave on his foil. Everything has danger of course, right place, right time.
@@misterbennetts that's inspiring to know. I have thought of trying out one of those electric assisted foil boards or possibly a wing foil set up or a padle board style. I think I'd need to cheat to begin with Some way of compensating for my physical limitations until I'm handy at it.
Yeh the Fliteboard’s are a great into to it. And then wing foiling is also a good way to get some time on foil. With a big enough board you can stand on the board with the sail and it pulls you onto foil. Give it a try!
80-85 depending on the brand is best for surfing. In my opinion, 75 is way too short. You’ll eventually end up on something around 85 if you do go 75 to start with 👍🏼
Yeh once again depends on the brand. I use a shim on the front bolts with the eagles on the F-one for more front foot pressure. Same with the lift foils. With something like Axis I’d use a shim in the back bolts to take out the front foot pressure cause they have way too much. It’s just a way of tuning the feel without moving the mast.
This needs to be legal in Canada? Why are Canadians always late on everything and restricting everything unnecessarily? 😡 I want this so bad but can’t even use it here 😥
@@misterbennetts Everytning except dope (drugs ) and imagine recently they even wanted to make it legal to do drugs in public 🙄 as if these people need more dead brain cells 🙈 but yeah, everything else that actually matters is illegal.
Like kite surfing these are easy to ride and master. Sure it will take some days/weeks to get the gist of it, but after that it's like snow skiing. The wave isn't dictating what you can do, you are. That makes it boring after a short period. And you'll note that the guys doing it - like kite surfers - are wankers who weren't ever really good surfboard riders. Any idea why?
@@misterbennetts Thank man. I'm over surfing with crowds, everytime you paddle out 5 people pop up out of nowhere, kinda over it lol. This foiling thing seems like a good solution.
