Endorphin Shift - First Run

The third in the Endorphin series from Saucony this year is the Endorphin Shift. It's a busy shoe with a lot of stuff thrown at it. On first glance, it may be the Homer Simpson designed car of running shoes - it's got a bit of everything. High stack height. Giant heel cup. Stability elements in the midsole. Puffy tongue. Funky colors. Double pull tabs.
All this brings this 38mm PWRRRUN shoe in at 10.1oz and puts it in a Structured Cushioning category of shoes. But does it work? Pretty much. But it's not without its issues.
Disclosures: this is a pair of shoes that I purchased with my own money. No one sent it to me or is reimbursing me. No one will get a chance to preview my footage or thoughts before the video goes up on youtube.

I love this shoe! The way you describe it is perfect. It's the stability, everyday trainer version of the endorphin series. My personal opinion is the shift is meant to be purely as a trainer for people who suffer from ankle issues but still is capable of going fast if you want. The shoe is definitely a tweener. If a ride 13 and a hurricane 23 had a kid the result would be the endorphin shift. The durability and longevity is also impressive as I have put 600 miles on it. I have another pair coming. As for looks. I easily think it's one of the best looking running shoes on the market. The endorphin series has been amazing and Saucony knows it! I also want to get the speed and use it as my tempo/racing shoe. If I didn't suffer from ankle issues I can totally pass on the shift. But as you said Saucony has a history of putting stability aspects into a shoe. Saucony is just giving its fans another option on its top of the line series. I appreciate it Saucony. They absolutely killed it in 2020. I'm excited what the 2021 version will bring.

I actually didn’t find the upper narrow but I have a very narrow foot. Probably why I thought it fit me great lol. It’s definitely a snug fit but i didn’t have any discomfort!

I have taken the Shift out for around 50miles now. The shoe does take a bit of time to get used too and the heel-cup really locked my feet in. Yeah, the shoes do run very warm, but overall considering this was my 1st Saucony I am enjoying them #lovetoallthatseethis

I loved the fit and the cushion of Shift. However, it felt too heavy although it was advertised as everyday trainer /recovery shoes. If Saucony can reduce some weight in version 2, this could be a big “hit” shoes for them. I really liked everything about the shoes except for the weight. Even the stack height did not bother me, although it may require some to get used to it. Loved the fact that it emphasized the forefoot cushion with the stack height. It will be interesting to see what Saucony would do in the next iteration (I do hope that there will be a version 2). Thanks for all your reviews.

I thought you would like this shoe, just a smooth ride for the miles. I’m a little over 30 miles in the Shift, and I would say the upper has stretched some the more it’s utilized but not loose by any means. Although the Speed is probably my shoe of the year given its comfort and versatility, the Shift is coming in at a close second

Finished my third run in the shift today. I am getting occasional knee hot spots with these. I have all three shoes and so far prefer the speed overall. I do think they do something funny to my knees, I sprinkle the shift in with Peg 37 for my easy day shoe.

Striking colourway is just so 80's. My very first ever Saucony. Got mine a few days ago, a bit hard at the moment to get it here in Oz, especially the correct size. First impression is they sort of feel like a Hoka Arahi 4.

I’ve put close to 50mi on mine and am loving it. On my first run I found it a bit snug on my mid foot, but loosening the laces a bit took care of it. My foot is between a D and a EE depending on the last. So far these one of my favorite shoes of the year. I know there are other speedy shoes out there that people get excited about. However, these can do almost everything well and despite the stack height, it didn’t feel clunky to me. The speed roll thing is working great and I’ve adapted to it since the first stride. Also it’s one of the few shoes that don’t give me fatigue on the ball of my feet on longer and long-ish runs. I can’t wait to try the Speed, though.

Interesting about the narrowness of the shoe and the issue with pain in the ball of your foot. I have had a very similar pain while wearing the vaporfly 4%, which feels like a really narrow shoe to me also. I generally avoid narrow shoes; I like a wide landing platform because we feet seem to be wider and I feel like a wider platform can better distribute the force of repeated pounded and lessens fatigue in specific parts of the foot and leg. So this review helps...think I'll try the Speed before the Shift.

I have pretty narrow feet, so the upper on the Shift didn't feel too tight to me. But I agree that the shoe is warm and that the outsole does not handle wet conditions well. Putting those two problems together was a big problem for me. I thought this would be a good long run shoe. But because it's so warm, by an hour or so into a run the shoe would get so full of sweat that the outsole would start slipping on the pavement with every step. So I never took it further than 10 miles or so. As I mentioned in a comment to your video about whether Saucony is bad for you, I also started experiencing hamstring tightness only when I ran in the Shift, especially for multiple days in a row. Eventually I decided I couldn't run in them anymore and gave them away.

I have the Endorphin collection and I'm totally digging the 'mutant' colourways. One of my favourite colourways of this year. I don't find it very cushioned really, I would say a relatively mid to firm ride with only a hint of cushioning on the feet. I can run for miles in this shoe with no issues. Yea, it might not win any awards and yea, there are other shoes that could easily rival this. However if its just plodding at a steady pace, not overly pushing this and going longer distances you are after then this shoe is more than capable. I've had no issues at all with this shoe.

Go this shoe in BLACK (you would like it) also have the Speed. Its an easy day shoe, but with a bit more response than the Clifton7 I would say. Speed for Tempo/Thresholds days, wouldn't want to do that in the Shift. Had it for a few weeks now, better after almost 70km, its a very good easy day shoe, just hope it last a lot of miles.

I have the shift for easy runs and the pro for races. Not an elite runner by anyone’s stretch of the imagination - I am upper middle of the pack usually - and I like both a lot. I am a heavier runner (6’4” and 225 pounds), so while running, the stiffness of the carbon fiber plate is just right, since my mass makes it bend easier than a runner that maybe weighs 160ish.

I just got these and only have 20 miles in them. I feel ya on the mid-foot being a little cramped...but I do feel everything is starting to soften a little. I hope at 50 miles or so, the shoe will express its true self. It's a bit different feel from other shoes that I have in the rotation like the Rincon, Beacon 2 and Vanish but I am digging it and hope to get more than 400 miles in a shoe. I think Seth feels it'll go to 700 mile'ish.

I’d say it depends what kind of runner you are. I’m a petite light female, efficient runner, and the Shifts would be way too much shoe for me. I don’t like heavier shoes and extreme stack heights. I have the Speeds and think they’re very versatile. The nylon plate is subtle and mainly kicks in when you pick up the pace. I’m using the Speeds primarily on my longer runs, both easy pace and faster pace or runs with some intervals or fartleks mixed in. They seem like they’ll be plenty durable.

Hey Phil, if the Speed was too narrow the Shift is going to be as well. They seem to have made them similar widths, but with more cushion in the shift upper. It would probably be best to run in a stability shoe. Visit your Fleet Feet store and they have a free foot analyzer that is great which will help in recommending a good shoe for your specific foot type. You can then try a few brands on their treadmill. Can't speak for the ride 13 but the beacon v3 is more of a tempo/fast shoe in my opinion. Not a lot of cushioning for longer runs. Maybe enough if you don't carry a lot of weight, it's a very nimble shoe.

I tried these today. Not a shoe for me. I like more adidas.

Another adidas fan here--Boston 8 and 9. But I did buy the End. Speeds and am really enjoying them on longer runs. The Shift would be way too much shoe for me.

Need to start thinking of doing some additional weight training. Running without some kind of weight training isn’t the best of ideas
