Energica's new Experia is the current king of EV motorcycle touring with the industry's biggest battery and fastest charging. This week EV Rider puts one the first two Experias to be ridden from California to Florida through its paces and talks to owner Rick Flashman about his experience with Energica's green tourer after thousands of miles in the saddle.

Excellent review and spot on presentation of the very most important specs on all relevant electric touring alternatives. Keep it up!

Great video. There’s actually a middle generation Energica though. I first got on an old, smaller pack Eva like you did. It was horrible. Weight all up top, range and efficiency wasn’t great at all. Went with a DSR. The next Gen, anything with the larger pack, they actually moved the center of gravity down and cut weight. All Ribelles are an example of this. The Experia is the same weight, but as you saw, amazingly balanced and the weight is very low. Moving from a Ribelle to Experia Made me almost crash at first, body was sending “Ribelle movements” to an Experia and it kept being too much. I can’t wait to see what they build next off this platform. Supposed to be more to come soon.

A factor in the Experia's nimble handling is due to an innovative feature that is not mentioned here. The electric motor spins in the opposite direction of travel, which helps counteract the gyroscopic effect generated by the rotating tires. This technique, originally developed in MotoGP (where they spin the clutch in reserve for a similar effect), enables the Experia to be more agile than would normally be expected for its weight.

Amazing video! Really well presented, as usual. I'm so glad you got to experience an Experia :)

Thanks Sam! I was thrilled to get the chance to finally ride one. What an awesome bike. Rick and Sabrina will definitely have some fun adventures ahead with their Experias.

Really enjoyed this video. I only recently bought an HD LiveWire and I'm loving the EV lifestyle. I have a Vulcan 1600 Mean Streak for those super long tours but for everything else there is the LiveWire :) In fact just three weeks into April, (still pretty cold here in Nova Scotia), I have 1000kms on the LiveWire this month and just 25kms on the Meanie.

That's awesome. I have a similar set up. For most of my riding I have a Zero SR/F and like you, for longer rides, I have a Vulcan. Mine is a 900 Classic LT. Here's a look at those 2 bikes: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vjF4Ww91Iko.html

Great video! Since my Livewire Del Mar got delayed, I'm looking at other options. Might go all out with the Experia. I don't tour (on my Ducati Hypermotard), but I might with the right bike.

Thanks Eric. That's interesting that you would consider both S2 Del Mar & Experia given how different they are; especially in terms of size, weight and range. Here's a link to some S2 Del Mar video coverage: evrider.tv/tag/livewire/ And here's another video comparing the Experia directly to the Zero SR/S: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-peH9pa6LYEw.html. It was done before Zero released the DSR/X.

Please more on experia! How is it compared to BMW GS? off-road?
@EVRider
@EVRider Год назад
Energica doesn't market the Experia as an off road motorcycle although I am aware of at least one rider that successfully did some gentle dirt roading with his recently. I haven't had the opportunity to ride a BMW R 1250 GS , so I can't directly compare them but the Beamer certainly looks like a beast of a bike.

Dude I want to get one of these with a big front wheel and off road suspension. I wish they’d make one of these with a bigger battery, coming out the sides like Boxer headers. You’d get more range and it would be easier to pick up.
@ZeroFun
@ZeroFun Год назад
They would likely be damaged too easily in a crash. Just winging something small at 70MPH could cause high voltage wires to be exposed and serious danger. :( They did spread the surface area out as much as safely possible on the Experia though. The charging capabilities are a nice evolutionary leap.
@thedownwardmachine
@thedownwardmachine Год назад
Hah there’s no such thing as “just” winging something at 70 mph, at that speed you’re lucky to survive. Lots of adv motos have crash bars and there’s no reason you can’t add the same to an Experia, but even better would be to build the Boxer batteries strong enough to take an impact.
@OrlandoRick
@OrlandoRick Год назад
It is really about weight & cost. At some point you have to stop adding battery to keep those two down. The battery is already weighted to the bottom quite well, making the Experia MUCH easier to pick up than any previous Energica (sadly don't ask me how I know).
@thedownwardmachine
@thedownwardmachine Год назад
@@OrlandoRick I'm not surprised, but think how much easier it would be if you had Boxer-style projections giving you that first 20 degrees of lift. Also we know that motos have successfully used that space and the air helps with cooling. Right now volumetric energy density on motos is the main battery blocker so it seems a no brainer. Yes I will die on this hill lol
@ZeroFun
@ZeroFun Год назад
If you look at the Experia release pics, there sort of is wings of batteries under the fairing. More air exposure to keep them cool on long rides/charges, but

As an obese total newbie in his mid 50’s, I will wait, hoping that Energica or Livewire will make a tricycle soon
