while I miss the banter of the in-person casts, I feel like you two are getting more comfortable with the remote dual cast and some of the natural feel that was lacking in the past is returning now. much love.
We have been blessed by the 20+ minute, actual factual Brood War, hive tech ZvZ. - - - - - - In a mirror match known for being a knife fight in a phone booth, one player chooses to instead strap plate mail to himself to weather the blows and bring us to a glorious macro game where almost every single unit of the race was made. This was perhaps the best ZvZ in SC:BW history and I sincerely hope from the bottom of my heart that we can see more ZvZ's like this in the future.
Same here. I've always dreaded ZvZ in these events to the point I will sometimes just skip watching entirely. I don't think I've ever seen a game go the distance, but my gosh when it does it's nothing short of magical.
I love the fact that, just before the game started, Arty was daydreaming about having a hive tech ZvZ game and talking about how rare it is. Someone needs to do a video showing the reaction of korean progamers and casters to watching this game.
Give them a break on the audio. They’re only making 126,000$/ year for ASL and you expect them to have synced audio on such a low budget and tight schedule…? They got this cast out only a mere 5 days late as well.
@@Tittytootyright? Maybe they should play music until first StarCraft unit death/kill then switch to StarCraft music. Since the beginning is usually slow and the same
I have been watching starcraft for nearly 15 years now. I have seen around three professional ZvZ games get to hive tech. That game was without a doubt the best ZvZ I've ever seen
ZvZ late game is such an incredible matchup: extremely dynamic and never-ending tension. I wish more players would go this path instead of flipping a coin.
that was more cool & fun than actually competitive or good. there's definitely one that was better, the other season, it just didn't have every pointless tech
LMAO! Tasteless saying that Artosis paid action and effort to have the hive tech game was so funny. What an insane ZvZ. Also Props to Artosis for knowing this match up even tho we never see hive tech in ZvZ!
He watched the match in advance, it's really obvious because he talks constantly about hive tech games before the match starts. Why would you do that? Unless you knew what was about to happen. Tasteless's reactions were way more genuine.
@@TheEdmon If you've ever watched them cast, Artosis especially always talks about hive tech in ZvZ.. You don't know what you're talking about. He didn't watch anything in advance.
@@Strohseph I've been watching since boxer was wearing a green spacesuit and tasteless was known as the stormcaster. You don't know what your talking about, Artosis blantantly watched this game in advance. There is no way to predict this 1 in a million game would happen before it even started.
@@StrohsephAnd it's not the simple fact that he talked about wanting to see a long game, or a hive game, which he sometimes does. He went on and on solely about hive games for the entire pre-game. Which he never does.
People may know Arty primarily from his on stream persona, but he really doesn't get enough credit for just how much game knowledge he has about all the matchups. Truly awesome, the best casting duo of all time.
that's what i miss most for gsl.. state is already meh at play-by-play, but he doesn't know history or builds AT ALL. arty actually treats this like a job and profession.
The game between Effort and Action is totally insane. But honestly Arty's knowledge of how the game was going to play out REALLY added to the hype of this game. Such an amazing cast of such a legendary game.
12:00 Tastosis 16:59 Light vs. Free (First Match) 46:37 Action vs. effOrt (Second Match) 1:15:35 Winners Match 1:40:16 Losers Match (sound appears to have desynched) 2:21:58 Final Match
I've been watching a lot of Starcraft and never commented on a video, but this time I had to. Every fan of Starcraft should watch this cast! The enthusiasm of Tastosis on that ZvZ was amazing. Thank you guys and Afreeca TV for many years of this wonderful game ❤
Effort really putting the will to victory on display. First the best zvz of all time, followed by 2 gritty, grinding victories. Great performance all day by effort.
Honestly surprised Effort is already in shape. Beating Free in late game Reaver+Archon PvZ, beating Light's monstrous almost unbeatable TvZ and going the distance in a drawn out ZvZ
An in shape, injury free Effort is a Flash killer. No wonder he dismantled those guys like he did. If he had just a little better start in his ZvZ he would have beaten Action as well.
DUUUDDDEEE!!!!! EFFORT IS BACK!!! THIS MAN IS SPECIAL EVER SINCE I WATCHED HIM PICK FLASH APPART IN ASL FINALS I HAVE BEEN FLOORED BY HIS LEVEL INGENUITY AND CREATIVITY AND EXECUTION!! PURE BRILLIANCE NOT TO MENTION THE GREATEST ZVZ OF ALL TIME HOLY BALLS!!!!
Action looked so much better. But yeah I was surprised by the last match he really just made all the right moves. Light was simply outplayed. Skipping the muta tech out of the 8 rax. Using those first two lurkers by sacrificing them to hold for reinforcements. Just amazing response times from the 8 rax hold to responding to all of Lights aggression. Even more amazing was his little hit squads he sent out just enough to continually deny those two bases once one attack was dealt with it seemed there was another to take it’s place and light could never stabilize those positions. It would have been so easy for effort to overcommit to aggression and simply lose the game. I don’t think light was playing bad by any stretch of the imagination. His irradiates were on point and really grueling. I could argue light should have pulled back more of his forces to stabilize maybe better to deal with 4 base ultra and keep the game alive but light is among the best in the world maybe he felt stepping off the gas would just be a longer loss because effort was finishing up all that crucial hive tech snd about to move into mass production. Very often in best of one’s it feels like one player can just steal the win. I sort of feel that way about actions hidden base in the winners match because that third was naked for so so long. But effort played an amazing ZvT and there’s no doubt it was his mechanics and descision making not luck that won him that match. One thing that’s too bad is I’d love to have seen a plague instead of a dark swarm at that last big dive by light. Everything was clumped it would have been epic lol
Great games and really great production, but the sound screw up in game 4 should have been noticed before posting it. Really unfortunate, hope you can up the QC!
Spoilers: free has been too wasteful with his gas, just too many Archons at the middle of the match for no apparent reason. I don't know what his gameplan there since for most time in the match he has 2000 minerals floating around. Maybe he thinks that if the game drags on, he can just speedlot his way in by trading storm templars with lurkers early on. In the end, effort decided to turtle down and trade efficiently with lurkers and plague and sniping observers amid free's dwindling gas reserve.
@@abunja Free not smart enough to realize to beat a camping zerg you should be expoing on their side of the map to force the zerg out (when your army is better). Its like anything "creative" and "new" is impossible for these players to think of.
@@viTaDBaD he got easily demoralized by those crackling drop not realizing that effort is almost a step away from all in. He could tried again and continue the storm drops and threat the remaining Zerg expos but sadly he didn't pursue it for long and tried to muscle his way in thinking he has the number advantage.
Thank you tasteless and artosis .. you guys rock! Also thank you Eon Zerg and Nyoken if you see this. We're lucky to have great people casting this great game in English!
effOrt vs Free was such an amazing match that even the sound desync didn't diminish my enjoyment, not one bit. It seemed to me that Free was playing better but that effOrt fought tooth and nail and brought him to a standstill, stunned him into making mistakes, then crushed him. effOrt seems like an incredibly strong defensive player. Can't wait to see the rest of this ASL!
everyone already knows how it looks like. I want to look at the game, not some hands flying all over the keyboard. That would be incredibly irritating. If someone is really interested in a close up, they can just search for it.
They used to do this back in the day but apparently, the pros don't want their keyboard and APM shown so they complained against it and it's no longer allowed.
Huge thanks to free for answering the question "how much can i lose if i max out and run my whole army into lurkers with no detection". Absolutely painful to watch him smash his face into a brick wall repeatedly instead of doing anything else.
@@danieln6700I think he felt like he was on a timer, but im not really sure why. He was up 2 or 3 or 4 bases at various points. If he just pushes with the reavers, hed be fine. And he did it once, killed a bunch of lurkers, then just stopped. Same with the storm drops. And he could have transitioned to a carrier fleet, or mixed in arbs, he had the time and the bank and lurkers dont shoot up. Maybe it was just a chaotic game, maybe it was nerves, no idea what was behind his decisions or lack thereof.
2:05:24 interesting thing about the Reaver. the reason why it's so slow is because the purpose that the Protoss designed it for in-universe was never intended to be used for war. it was originally meant to be a mobile Factory, but when the Zerg started to enter the Koprulu Sector and became the absolute menace that they are, many Protoss commanders decided to retrofit their Reavers that were mainly meant for colonial construction and repairs into a weapons manufacturing plant because they just needed more firepower against the Zerg. so, the Reaver's very crude and slow method of locomotion was never meant to take it very far, mostly just to make small adjustments or move a few meters one direction or another to be in a more convenient position for use by phasesmiths, while most of the time it was meant to be moved long distances via teleportation or transport.
Does sc1 actually runs at 60fps? The game looks really bad like this EDIT: It doesnt, please do not transform all the video to this format, doest not look good at all Dx
@@majormononoke8958 Yes, I think so, I've been watching these videos for years and it's the first time I've felt so dizzy, specifically, from the camera movement when casting the game
Damnit, next late game ZvZ isn't going to come around till after I'm dead, like Haley's comet Best of ones should be illegal in starcraft unless it's zvz
Oh dear, I was hoping we'd avoid any potential audio desync, but it looks like it's reared its ugly head again. Ah well, the games are entertaining enough that I can ignore this for now.
ok isn't the gamesound in the effort free game off? like at 1:52:12 is no corsair attacking sound and sometimes there are sounds that should niot be there
Wrong. But it was one of the best ones for sure. Takes 3rd place for me. 1st would be ZerO vs RorO @ La Mancha and 2nd would be Jaedong vs YellOw @ Match Point
Ah that winners match was frustrating as hell to watch. The fact that Light knew exactly what Action was up to from the start, yet still has to spend an agonizing 10 minutes checking every base and it turned out to be the biggest bluff expansion, just in time for him to sac the base and walk across the map. fuck Bo1 man. Hoping the ro16 culls a lot of the garbage zergs that don't belong there and we might have a decently balanced ro8. Champion play by effOrt the whole night but
Some amazing games! Loved the dynamic play by Action and Effort. Free's strategies were awesome...even if his late game execution cost him games. Sad to see Light go, as he played well. As far as upsets go, this group gave ones for good play. And then there was the best ZvZ in a long time...
currently the most entertaining group by far! - - - - - always respected Effort for being the only player Flash has not defeated in a 5 match series, and after today's games the respect is sky high!
1:06:00 That Ultra must be one of the most confused Ultras in history. Imagine freshly hatching from egg, bloodthirsty for terran units, only to realize that you spawned in this game.
Game audio and the korean casting were out of sync some of the time, which is a shame because it was one of the best days ever in ASL. Late game zerg seems way overpowered against terran. I think it's actually a little broken with the consume/dark swarm... I'd be ok with a patch making dark swarm more expensive, or something like that, because I'm tired of seeing terrans lose to late game zerg even when they're playing much better than the zerg. Light knocked out early again. Is artosis still gonna keep saying he's the best player in the world? He's clearly not the best in these tournament settings. The biggest problem though, is this "best of one" crap... I can understand having the first 2 matchups in this round be best of one, but for the winner's match onward it should be best of 3. Then we would probably still have Light and Snow so we would get to experience the highest level of play possible. Instead, we get some guys who probably just had a really good day and advanced, and I wouldn't be surprised if they get demolished going forward. Still a good season though and I'm looking forward to the rest.
Pah, Where did light play better than the Zergs lmao...? Literally, got minedgame out, got his strategy outcountered, outplayed, outeverything... If you really think Terran played better in this group than you literally have no idea what you talking about... Literally...
EffOrt has literally beaten Flash in an ASL finals, so I think it's time for you to give him some credit instead of saying it's some sort of imbalance especially considering TvZ is terran favored. If it wasn't for zerg lategame being so strong they would never win any matches against terran. I do agree that bo1 isn't great but the bo3's start in ro16 I believe. Also it's not like the players who advanced are slouches, Action is consistently decent and EffOrt is an ASL champion, but it is a bit of a shame that Snow was eliminated. I think it's becoming more and more clear that protoss is significantly weaker than the other two races at the top level in this era of starcraft.
@@majormononoke8958 Against Action, Light only lost because that hidden base stayed up the whole game (one of the best spots for a hidden I've ever seen). Light still kept it close though and Action had to win with an all-in (with dark swarm). Against effort, Light was clearly outplaying him (until dark swarm). Against both players, I could see Light winning in a bo3. "Literally". And I wasn't only talking about Light playing better than these guys, but the matchup in general. Artosis agrees with me about dark swarm too by the way, so it's not like I'm in bad company saying this.
@@dogboneman69 I know Effort defeated Flash in the finals. I'm not just talking about Effort but the whole matchup. And I don't think Effort really outplayed Light here. It looked like Light was ahead until Effort "got dark swarm and won". And then Action beat Light because of the hidden base (and then a dark swarm all-in push). I think in a bo3 Light would have probably won both matches. "TvZ is terran favored". You're referring to that old flow triangle which is supposed to mean that "terran often has the edge against zerg in early game". But BW has changed to such a degree, I don't know if the triangle is that relevant anymore. That was just one take on the matchups anyway and not set in stone. "If not for zerg's late game, they would not win any matches against terran".... I don't think so. Zerg wins all the time with mutas in mid game and zergling rushes. Yes I know the bo3 start a little later. I'm looking forward to it when we can be more likely to advance the truly better player. "It's not like the players who advanced in this round were slouches". Regarding the need for a bo3, I wasn't talking about just this round, but also earlier with Calm and Killer. Were they the best players in those groups, in better form than their opponents? Or did they just win a bo1 where anything can happen. Also yeah Effort's a former champion but he hasn't even been in asl in forever. I think if bo3's were played here, Light beats Action and Effort both. "Regarding Snow, it's becoming more clear that toss isn't good at this level". I'm not sure I'd agree. Again, I think Snow would have gotten out in a bo3. At least mini made it through, so it looks like he'll have to carry the protoss.
Totally agree on the BO1 thing. It's such bullshit that ASL itself is full of BO1s in R24 and even R16, yet the qualifiers have BO3. It's so damn hard getting in to ASL, and this is a game where cheese and build order victories can easily determine a single map win; there's no good reason for all these BO1s.
The ZvZ was of course amazing. The loser's match was also pretty amazing as well. This has been by far the best day of ASL, and makes up for the short days.
