my friend told me to watch less anime and get more of a social life. but how can I gain a life away from anime when anime is my life? people just don't get it, we aren't all just perverted 40 year old men, we're otaku and anime, manga, and games make us happy so we should be able to enjoy them without being judged by people who think we're better than us. anime isn't just a bunch of conventions or characters it's a way of life, at least it is for me.

Victoria Attis Actually, a NEET is someone who is "Not in Education, Employment, or Training" of any kind. Otaku and NEET are commonly used together in Japan. But not all the time.

Am I the only one who's never had this problem? Where I am, it's perfectly acceptable to enjoy anime and manga(though I spend far more time reading light novels than the aforementioned media). Seriously, my school basically has a cult of Naruto fans(They wear the headband, do the run, some of them even have the Akatsuki robes. I seriously think they're a cult, but who am I to judge?), and nobody cares. The majority of my school is into some form of Japanese media, yet we all also enjoy some form of other media and most of us play some sport(baseball for me, most others play football or basketball). Is that really a rarity?

My high school is filled with stereotypical Starbuck's girls and jocks... quite a few people think anime and manga is a joke. In my art class the tables beside me always make fun of anime, and those who enjoy it. I have anime pins and locker magnets... must people don't care, but I have been made fun of. It's really stupid and just petty.

first: that was a representation of Japan. second: i am pretty sure that you don't know what otaku means in japan XD i mean, i don't have a problem with people misusing this term anymore, because we westerns misused SO MUCH that we basically gave it a new meaning. Still, officially, liking anime and manga does NOT equal otaku. But, at this point, i am pretty sure you already know what the term means anyway. that is why, lol.

I remember back in the year this vid was posted being told that I was going to go to hell and having salt either thrown or rubbed into my skin while being held down by several other girls and not being able to talk without someone threating me this was all because I was in to anime/manga. Devan Skrobarcek Otaku doesn't mean you stay at home all day with no social life, it just means you like anime. I call myself an otaku, as do many of my friends, and even my girlfriend agrees to calling herself an otaku. It's not a bad thing, just something that is a little different from the rest. A hikikomori is someone with no social life and stays at home all day. Hope I helped. :)

Oskar Kovac I know. I was just giving a general description. It can just mean you like a certain thing. In most cases it is anime, however it could be anime, cars, sports, books, math, it doesn't really matter.
