I have been married almost 50 years. I picked a classic solitaire with no other diamonds. Set in 14 Kt. Gold with a platinum head. After that many years the bottom of the band was worn thin but easily repaired. Although Pavé set diamonds are beautiful I would never buy a ring that was going to be worn daily set with Pavé they just aren’t practical. I constantly hear young ladies saying a diamond fell out of the setting. I would rather wear a chunky gold band set with maybe 3 to 5 diamonds set in the band vs. Pavé they are just too delicate. Another good idea is to schedule your engagement ring on your home owners insure in case of loss. If you don’t and it is lost your home owners insurance will not cover. Just get it appraised and give a copy of the certificate to your insurance company.

agreed. I have a five-stone engagement and I'm worried enough about those as it is. I won't be doing an eternity band as a wedding band I'd be so worried all the time. My wedding band will likely be just plain gold which I think is actually very chic or if it has stones it'll just be on the top.

The more diamonds in an engagement ring, the higher the maintenance will be because you will constantly have one falling out. That’s why solitaires or trinity rings are the best. Thank you, great video!

Thank you, i love all your good tips and advice. Very practical and true. Personally I like thick band regardless of engagement or costume rings because of this reason you mentioned (durability). Thin band just look too dainty and too fragile and also doesn't look good. 14k gold have less gold than 18k gold but is more harder because of more other alloys metal in it. Because of this reason, 14k gold is less likely to dent/scratch or bend doesn't matter of the gold color.

Hi Terri, thanks for your comment! 18 karat rose gold is a more soft metal, but 14 karat rose gold is a durable option for an engagement ring. I put a lot of my clients in 14 karat rose gold, so if you have a 14 karat ring you should have nothing to worry about! But it sounds like you take great care of your ring anyways, so as long as you keep that up and get regular cleanings and inspections from your jeweler it should last for generations! :)

I just got mine. I love it so much. It was handmade and in 14k gold with diamonds but it does have a very thin band and the prongs are small but proportional as it isn't a huge center stone haha. So I was CLOSE to three out of three. Time will tell! I trust this designer though ....!

Very informative. I just did a bunch of research into Palladium. Awesome stuff! Thanks! I'm curious about moonstone though. I get that it's a 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale, but what does that really mean? Like in practical life, how easy/hard is that to crack/chip? Are we talking about having to replace it every 1, 5, 10 yrs?
@abbysparksjewelry
@abbysparksjewelry 5 лет назад
Thank you! I'm glad you found this helpful. Moonstone is a beautiful stone, but yes it's more soft. It's hard to give an exact number. It really depends on how careful you are with your jewelry, the cut and quality of the stone, and how it's set. But with that being said, it's pretty certain that it will break at some point. It's much too soft for an engagement ring that you wear everyday. We had a client come to us for a new engagement ring because her first moonstone engagement ring broke within 9 months of the proposal, and that's not uncommon. Unless you are extremely delicate with your jewelry (not banging it on keys, car doors, computer keyboards, etc.) or you are planning on not wearing your engagement ring everyday, I would save moonstone for a cocktail ring or a special fashion piece that you wear occasionally. Even if it doesn't chip moonstone is highly susceptible to scratching, so it will show wear and tear. Hope that helps!

I have a moonstone necklace that I adore. I wore it all summer in the pool, sweaty work outs, hiking, traveling, etc. It still looks beautiful. However, it is on a short necklace, not a ring. So it gets hit on things less than a ring would.

14K is stronger than 18K. I would not chance 18K for an engagement ring. Also- if you are using white gold, 18K will just turn yellow and have to be replated with Rodium. My engagement ring is 14K and I have never had a problem. My wedding ring is 18K and - although white gold, it just keeps getting yellowish. I’ve had it replated with Rodium every year.

My first engagement ring was a 18k white gold with diamond, never lost a stone and just ones in 15 years I ask to replated with rodium just cause was cleaned in a jewerly store and is absolutely durable and more value with 18k gold than 14k.

@TheJohasir
@TheJohasir 2 года назад
Hello Jusu, it depends the country where you are from or where you live now. For example: In Italy, where I live now, the engagement ring is used in the left hand, in the "ring finger", you can google it (the left hand goes direct to the heart 😊). Then, when you marrie your future housband, the band goes in the same finger too (left hand). In some countries, one's you put the band in the left hand, the engagement ring pass tho the right hand, same finger. In Perù, for example, you Keep both in the left hand (I personaly preferere first the engagement ring and then The band outside as stop ring). My advice: if you have to choose your ring (cause one hand is bigger than the other): try a ring and a band together cause when you'll use both together probably your finger is gonna need 1/2 or one size plus to stay confortable. I hope to helped you. Best regards 👋😊

I'm looking into buying an engagement ring. It is a 1.6 mm band and has about 100 pave-set diamonds rolling across the shank of the band; they call it rolled micro-pave. Is this something I should avoid?

Is 18K white gold mixed with palladium a viable option for an engagement ring?
@abbysparksjewelry
@abbysparksjewelry 4 года назад
I would stick with 14k gold, because 14k gold has more alloys in it, which is used to strengthen the constitution of the gold, because gold is a soft metal. For an engagement ring, you want your metal to be tough because you're wearing it everyday and it's going to go through a lot.

@abbysparksjewelry
@abbysparksjewelry 2 года назад
14k Rose gold is an excellent option for engagement rings, and is just as durable as any other type of gold! :) All gold has alloys mixed in to make it durable enough for jewelry, Rose Gold has all of those alloys plus copper which give it it's rosy hue. I made a video on rose gold that you can watch for more info, here's the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-My9-A0Vz16I.html

Loved your content! Only on the point of 18k gold... coming from a country where it's 18k or nothing (14k gold is considered a kinda cheap jewelry, most jewelry houses do not use it), I can say we've never had any problem regarding durability on 18k gold. Of course it's only talking about my experience and closer people and jewelers... On the point of the sterling silver... that's so true! Please don't make your engagement rings with silver, even the chunkiest bracelets tend to bend and break or have fisures... beware

I agree abaut 18k cause 14k is less gold and it meant less value too. Outside of USA people don't invest in 14k gold rings and a 18k ring is eternal and durable (never heard people despointed abaut 18 k) my engagement ring is gonna be made soon with 18 k.

@sbwright9260
@sbwright9260 2 года назад
IMHO go for best you can afford. Ignore all the side stones on the band as you are paying for those and that takes monies away from the main stone. Stick to either a cushion cut where less waste on diamond or classic (yet priciest) round which grabs all light. Also think about a diamond wedding band as a ring. A 1/2 carat total weight only 1/2 of the band allows larger stones and is a nice alternative. Good luck

Have you consider buying a moissante ring? It will be as beautiful and nearly the same durability as a diamond. With a moissante you can get a much bigger stone for a much affordable price. Look into it, it will might change your mind after.

Old gold 18ct rings from around the turn of and into the early 20th century tend to be ornate--not the kind of ring that works with today's lifestyle. If your great grandmother had an ornate wedding band, chances are she had at least one maid or someone who helped her do the housework.

Would a tourmaline be good for an engagement ring ??
@abbysparksjewelry
@abbysparksjewelry 5 лет назад
Great question! Tourmaline is so magical. It's considered a fairly hard stone, and is still susceptible to scratching. However, if you or your partner is not hard on your hands and you care for it properly, it should be ok. I would make sure that if you go with this option it's in a really strong setting, and that setting is really close to your finger/not high profile so that you're not banging it around on car keys, door handles, etc. to avoid chipping. Tourmalines are also sensitive to heat, so don't wear it in a hot tub or any situation where the temperature around is changing really rapidly or it could cause your stone to crack.

In the 1970s/1980s there was this trend of "upgrading" a ring to celebrate a milestone anniversary (e.g., 25, 30, or 50 years). Some jewelers sell engagement rings with a push that "upgrading" the stone or ring is always an option.

18k gold is GOOD for engagement rings! 💍 please stop saying 18k is “too soft”. In most of the world, outside of the UK and US, 18k (.750) is considered the best and 14k (.583) is considered American garbage. The UK even goes down to 10k (.416 /.417). TIFFANY used platinum or 18k gold. I think Tiffany knows what they’re doing. Otherwise a good video.
@JT1358
@JT1358 2 месяца назад
Agreed. 18k and 9k have been the standards here in UK for decades. 14k and 10k are American and European. My engagement ring and plain wedding bands were both 18k and worn side by side for years with no problem. I always took my engagement ring off, never wore it for cleaning, gardening, showering, gym etc etc. Don't mix 9k alongside an 18k. Silver and the semi-precious stones are basically costume jewellery. However lovely they may be, they will not stand the test of time. And don't get me started on the current 'trend' for really high settings with huge claws! Totally impractical to wear, catch on everything, scratch your furniture and friends to bits - and look tacky. There, that's my rant for today!! 😂

Nowadays they make rings which are very fine and not very heavy or strong. If you want a 18k ring, I would ask the jeweller to secure the diamonds with 10 k prongs and make a heavier and stronger ring. Then it is no problem and I know this from experience.
