I couldn't believe how bad the original engine was in my 27'. There was a good .020 clearance between the pistons and cylinder walls. I lapped the valves, installed a new head and the old girl actually ran! I kept finding water in the oil and knew that it wasn't a problem with the head or head gasket. I finally found a rust hole in the block. I was wondering if you are going to get into the transmission. Check the triple gear bushings. They are almost always bad.

Wow! Thanks for the advice. I decided to not go through the transmission on this rebuild. The triple gears seemed to be O.K. They had some end play, but no rocking, so I think they will last a while yet.

When I did the bottom end of mine, it was a week of assembly, disassembly and reassembly, then a day or two of second guessing myself and finally just saying "that's it" and calling it good. It seems to run fine now....... but it wasn't the most fun I've ever had. :)

I had the same experience, that engine was put together several times before I decided it was right. I am not quite ready to start it yet, so still hoping it runs smooth.
