Phosphoric acid is the most common rust remover. It's also in Coke, just at a different concentration. Things aren't always as toxic as they seem. Clever chemistry for the win.
These balls are called tank floats and or mist control balls. They're made from polyethylene. They reduce mist in plating applications, reduce fumes, heat loss, evaporation, drag out, and exhaust maintenance.
That’s called acid picking H2SO4 or HCL (more common) Plastic balls are meant to avoid/reduce acid fumes and heat isolation ( energy ). Cables will eventually corrode
Acid takes the rust right off, once the rust leaves, you clean it Thoroughly in a mixture of cold & hot water but mainly cold. To keep it from rusting once out of the water, dip it in a lubricant oil that prevents rusting again

Is there really that much of a crossover? I see a lot of this online but never in person. I'm more into alternative hip hop these days but have always liked anything that isn't country. Ironic since I grew up in the rural south but yeah metal, nu-metal, and grunge rock were my favorites as a kid. It gets hard trying to pick music around newer freinds because one minute we'll be vibing together then my next song makes them wish they were deaf lol

I'd agree - the rust coverage was very uniform and pale - if I were a betting man I'd bet they soaked it in a weak acid solution to accelerate the process. A naturally rusted short block would not be uniformly rusted like this one is.
@Netscape Navigator Well that depends on how far of a drive it is to the nearest machine shop that has a hot tank. If you have one close and they don't charge a ton of money to hot tank a block, do that. If that's not the case, I would take some rustoleum rust dissolver (it works really well) and spray the shit out of the block on a stand, then pressure wash it off. The only place you really have to focus on are all the bearing surfaces and the cylinders.
@@patrickomann3580 I doubt they switched it out just for a youtube short! It might have spent a day or two in the tank and plenty of work around the shop could have occurred in which they might have moved the ladder for.

There is blow by, front and rear crank seals, gear housings, head gaskets, hydraulic pumps and hoses, Oil coolers, autolubers and so on that all can make a mess. No, rust isn’t an issue on some of these but a lot of times its more than just tightening oil pan bolts.

@liam Anderson If I don't know anything, I either try and do as much research about the subject matter as possible, or use basic principle of physics. Just jumping into something without having any knowledge about it is asking for a bad time.
You can do the same thing with a battery charger, Some kind of electrolyte (Lye, salt, Etc.), some steel rebar, and a container large and strong enough to hold the block and that much water.

Hey do you immediately coat the metal with some sort of rust preventative? I've seen whole cars dipped like this and I was always curious how they prevented it from immediately corroding from the moisture in the air before paint
Steel and iron are usually stripped and degreased with a hot caustic wash. This is allowed to flash rust before it’s dipped into hot phosphoric acid. This converts the rust to iron phosphate which bonds extremely well to the metal.

Thought I’d add too questioner that if u go too this dudes YT channel, he’s uploaded several many vid’s of whole car bodies gettin’ dipped & washed, among the other various items he’s dipped.. can be somewhat relaxing to watch these steps. After seeing several of his uploads, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’d personally prefer now to have my own classic cars’ body parts dipped, instead of media blasting them!

I call the tiny, turbo charged, engines, grenades. So far, they have been proven true to their nickname. GM and Ford should consider a recall. Four cylinder engines with turbos have always been problematic. But they keep coming back.
Now how do you guys keep the metal from flash rusting. I ask bc I use a ultra sonic cleaner to clean old tools and things and they flash rust over night. Even if I soak them in oil or wd-40
After rinsing with water to neutralize the acid spray it with WD-40 while it is still wet, then dry with a blow gun. If painting afterwards wipe down with solvent after drying. Do not blow dry before spraying with WD-40, instant flash rusting will occur.
Original WD40 displaces moisture but does not protect from condensation. Coat metals in actual light machine or mineral oil to displace moisture in the pores of the metal which cause the flash rusting. Allow to sit for 5 minutes and wipe off the excess. WD40 is only good for breaking surface rust and keeping electrical connections lubricated.
Ok...try it before you say no. Boil a pot of water and drop the flash rusted part right in. The rust will turn black and stop. It's an old method of blueing.
