Finally got the engine out and it went a lot easier than expected. I apologize for the month long delay but work stuff got in the way.
Still a lot of stuff needed to come off - all the electrical up front, back seat brackets, fender and more. Before you can take the engine out, all the control cables need to be removed as do all the fuel & vacuum lines, exhaust and more.
The service manual was a great resource for this job. The engine is a structural member and is part of the frame. The top of each cylinder head has a mounting bracket and those bolts come out as do the 3 bolts at the bottom aft side of the engine case. A regular old car jack is used to support the engine when the last two bolts are removed and then the engine is slowly lowered and rolled out. The drive shaft is just a flexible coupling (u-joint) with a spline and slides out easily.

Hi Ken, you make it look easy! I'm starting to remove the engine from the fram of my 1981 XV1000, got a bit confused by the (Clymer) manual talking about removing the clutch and the whole LH side cover as part of engine removal process. Doesn't seem to make sense, could you advise on basic steps, eg removal exhaust, footpegs, carburettors, chain, etc Thanks, love you hi-res videos, the bike looks amazing! Paul from down-under

Hey Paul…doesn’t make sense to me either. For the clutch there should be a cover plate and a way to remove the cable from the leverage mechanism. I’m not an expert with the 81 but most of the Viragos use a similar variation of the same process. For me, the foot pegs, crash bar, and all the ancillary assembly parts came off both the left and right side (side stand, switch, regulator, etc). Then I removed all the fuel lines, choke & throttle cables. Exhaust and muffler were next and once it was free of all that stuff, I removed all but the most forward and aft engine bolts. They came out last with the support of the jack. Since mine is shaft drive, the coupler just slides out of the u-joint. As you can see in the videos, I didn’t have to take my engine side cover off to get the clutch cable off. I hope yours doesn’t either.

So my ignition switch (the keyhole part) is shattered and I have lost the ability to use my steering lock where would you suggest I look to find a new one I have found a few online that look similar but I can’t find one that is an exact alternative.

I'd try eBay first. You could definitely find an exact match (lockout, plugs, etc) will all be as the original - either new or used. Just the key wouldn't be the same.
