If you are familiar with turbo cars, we know that staging a turbo car is different than other cars. This staging process is brutal and is very though on parts, especially the thrust bearing in the engine. The thrust bearing is responsible for keeping the crank in the correct location, front to back in the engine. This is called endplay. Here is a little advice on helping the thrust bearing live! This will be a multi part video as there are several things that need to be addressed. This is Part 1!

Also guys don’t be scared to get in there and get hands on your own stuff. I know I have played with some clearance and tried some stuff and some of it didn’t work which sucks but now I know for sure. There is a lot of garbage out there online so sometimes you just need to get in there. Plus more experience isn’t ever a bad think. Hell yeah.

As always great video dude you always have great tips and information. I have never had this problem but that could be because I have a lower horsepower NA motor but I know others who have had this problem. And I guess every engine builder or machine shop has their own solution and I guess it's one of those things there's really no right or wrong way as long as the solution works. Keep up the great work and videos

aint that cool leave it to a racer to figure out how best for his parts to survive the riggers of high horse power racing. once again ur vids help fellow racers

John, you offer the most informative advice I have seen here on RU-vid. It's definitely not for beginners. I'm from the turbo Buick world & have run into thrust bearing issues which are usually torque converter issues or spacing to the flywheel. Thank you for the insight, & I found out out about you from John Doc. Glad I did. Cheers, James.

Thanks, yes cooler line pressure and spacing are huge, gonna do a vid on those also.

If I am presently using 20w 50 in my 2001 dodge ram v8 but if I replace the bearings, should I go back to a lower viscosity oil, or would it be safe to stay with the 20w 50. I just replaced the oil and I am going to save it if it looks good, so that is why I am asking the question above. I don't have a turbo on my van, so I don't think what you are describing applies to me, but if it does, please let me know. Thank you Turbo John.

I like the oil grooving and the torrington bearing idea as well. Has there been any torrington bearing failures using them in that application?
@griffsrearmountturbothemod1623
Had this problem a few years ago, for me it turned out to be excessive cooler line pressure.. like you said dump valves help great, I monitor my pressure now.. Good tip on diverting a little oil...
@n1njaweedman
@n1njaweedman 3 года назад
Nice tips man. A needle roller bearing at the nose of the crank is the best solution in my limited opinion, a "torrington" bearing. we use em in our turbo straight sixes here in aussie

How much oil pressure do you lose with this? I'm looking to do this on my olds 455 in my 11000 lb gmc motorhome, and some are having problems with thrust bearings on rebuild, of course the factory never did this, stock there was no issue from factory
@TurboJohnRacing
@TurboJohnRacing Год назад
on the racecar, with a good oil pump it is not a noticeable pressure loss.

I'm just shy of the minimum spec in a 350 I'm building. I'm at .00275", too tight for my liking. I'd be much happier with .006-.010". Not a turbo car.

I have a 363 sbf dart block, 88mm turbo and c4 transmission, thrust bearing got wiped so it had a cast crank while I had the crank out I got an eagle neutral balance crank and put in, spaced my converter about an 8th in or a lil more and ran it 10 miles and wiped the thrust again, wtf

Thanks Jhon! Great video very informative, im new to high performance engine just bought my first, took it apart and found what you described was losing my mind because crankshaft endplay was .0012 and I understand why I did notice the Needle bearing I didn't understand why! Now that I watch your video everything make sense thanks again!

What oil do you use in your racecar and do you feel that it's better than the rest. I work for a shop that builds race engines and information from guys like you that race a lot with very fast cars is valuable to me. Back in the late 80's and maybe early 90's I experienced some great things with Royal Purple like making a few more HP, engine ran cooler, and would even idle higher. It changed I think because of regulation's or whatever. I've never seen such again but would love to find something that works that good again. I enjoy your videos and hope you keep doing it for a long time.

Brad Penn is what we mostly use. We do very frequent oil changes, but it does a much better job keeping the methanol and condensation separated.
@rongravel4585
@rongravel4585 5 лет назад
I second that. Brad penn had been my go too for higher HP builds. Just buy a Qt and dump a cap full on your bench. You can’t wipe it off. Lol. It works well at higher temps when most oils thin out and become useless for the engine. Amsoil is my second favorite.

My opinion is that the 3 thick grooves that are made from the inside out on the sides of the edge of the bearing are the cause of some oil pressure escaping there, which could be used as a film where the crankshaft is supported. when straining from back to front. there are some bearings that have those same grooves but they fade away and end before they reach the edge of the bearing. It's just my opinion, I'm not an engineer, much less an expert.

Can this cause flywheel grinding? I keep having to replace flywheels on my 79 f100. I recently got the tranny rebuilt and noticed the thrust Barring are warn out.

hmm.. had a complete Crank fail because of that.. Scat Crank from my 331cu ..engine Builder blame the converter I use ...good video will do this mods on the Bearing when it comes to rebuild ...perfect ..

I put a used engine in mines and when he did an oil pan removal he noticed one thrust bearing in the pain.he said,eventually need a knew engine it runs great no noises or nothing.I have a 2005 mr2 spyder automatic

I have an LS motor and I have tore up 2 thrust bearings. The bearing is wore from the front and back. Any ideas?
@olamabambi4193

Check your thrust clearance is correct.
@davidreed6070
@davidreed6070 3 года назад
It seems that ls engines have a lighter thrust than a small block. Holding the brake seems to be rough on thrust bearings.
@Fmandan77
@Fmandan77 2 года назад
I believe that's because LS engines have knock sensors and the tighter clearances are supposed to help not create false knocking.

@@TurboJohnRacingahhh I knew that was coming, and I know but freaking head gaskets are 125 dollars each, idk I guess it's coming apart, it ran perfectly fine no loss of oil pressure or anything, I cut the oil filter and it looked like gold paint
