Great idea! Chest to operate as a pump :)
@davidsirmons
@davidsirmons 6 лет назад
My brain has been burning up with tons of engineering ideas in the last few weeks. Part of that is the above idea for pressurization for the body and the head, separately. The body could be set to a static pressure (with expansion for breathing allowed by a hidden expansion pocket of some sort) and the helmet would of course require a constant influx of breathable air. The body and helmet would be locked off from each other, regarding air. Breathing would be a problem, given the diminished air density with increased altitude. So, an active pressurizer (micro positive displacement compressor) could activate when outside pressure drops. It would 'overdrive' at 16-18 psi (there would be a 'wastegate' to maintain 14psi constant) accounting for the drop in pressure during each inhaled and exhaled breath. That was easy enough to figure out. The hard part, for me, is how to create a sealed inner hull which moves easily and properly for human ranges of motion, while still allowing an overlaid actuator frame, then armor.

This analysis is a bit "wrong" in terms of comics. The end of US Army can be avoided because the Iron Man is property of Tony Stark and not of the government. Missing the analysis of how the Iron Man Suit is made from the comic. There are only the current and existing technology ... if it is possible create the ark reactor I think that we already have the availability of make the suit. 1- structural analysis missing about the mobility part, the evidence is at the final conclusions 2- energy analysis miss the Ark Reactor energy or how produce it. 3- thermal analysis, is related to previous point 4- ergonomic analysis ????? missing. How an human enter or "dress" the suit ? 5- biological analysis, stress during the flight, or during the usage of weapons ... when human inside needs to go in bathroom ? I hope that my suggestion helps you. Thanks

Can we make an exo-suit? Yes. Can we make Iron Man's suit? HELL, NO! The suit endured a tank shell shot in the movie. That would require a material so strong as to act as tank armor in a very thin layer, and some material that can absorb the impact of the shell without transferring it to the user. Not going to happen anytime soon. If something like the arc reactor existed, it would be the holy grial of energy. No more problems with global warming. Incredible electric cars, or even personal planes. No need for a power grid, you can power everything with this.

You have to look at what kind of shell hit IM, if it was HE it could be possible to the suit to withstand the shot. Sabot would go straight through any armor. Iron man suits are impossible to make like the movies, you need some kind of gravitational and inertia manipulation to withstand the extreme g loads.

Yeah but if you have the weaponry you can counter the tank shot. And the chances are low to be shot by a tank if you were Iron Man. Also, as for the energy that too is possible if the suit could be re chargeable however that would consume loads of electricity and make your bill spike. It is possible though.

Would the same follow for the stabilizers (in the hands)?
@synergyfiles3536

The rule is that you double the diameter of the thrusters, the force of thrust goes up by four times. So it makes from sense to have few large thrusters rather than several small ones. There is at most just 1000 Watts of solar energy that falls on a meter square area during peak times. The exposed surface of the suit to the sun at any given time would be less than 2 m2. Solar panels are at most 23% efficient. So overall 500Watts of energy can be recouped. This is not much compared to the energy required by the thrusters. Thanks

A suit that locks every pivot point would protect the occupent from damage if hit and the light weight would just fling them around. Flight is not currently possiblle due to size but having some type of thruster tech would help the operator move if the weight of an item is too much for the suit to handle. The main issue one would face is the electrical system. A method of wiring the limbs etc from all external and internal errors/ damage would be the hardest thing to sort out. One stab and an arm wouldn't work or worse, the systems may malfuncion and each one of the operators fingers might get broken (or arm). Imagine being the person trapped inside when all function ceases.

The biggest roadblocks are consistent energy supply and the compact thrusters. Everything else in the suit, like hud, automation, weapons, enhanced limbs and the outer shell are all possible. A couple of nitpicks about the MCU and the Mk I to XLVI suits lore, but this mostly lines up. As in Iron Man 1, the greatest issue for creating these suits is the power supply.
@davidsirmons
@davidsirmons 6 лет назад
And depending on electrical demands, there is a solution, though not a 'reactor' proper. A compact and high-output generator (standard car alternators crank out 50-70 amps @ 12 volts for years, and some can go as high as 150 amps) could be spun by a small and strong output electric motor (all alternators have to do is spin). That motor can be powered by a high density battery like used for electric bikes in the 1500w to 2500w range at 20 something volts (not as sexy as a reactor, but at least this is a plausible reality). This would power a strong and small motor at 3500 to 4000 rpm for hours. That's more than enough to create power for a number of systems, if they're built to take advantage of the amperage. And with new constructions of carbon arrays coming out every day, one or more of those could bring a meaningful electric output increase in an otherwise standard generator, even above what we have in cars now.

You would have to have non-returnable valves in place for your breathing apparatus I suppose. Lithium Sulphur batteries are up and coming technology and holds a lot of promise. Already an Unmanned aircraft called the "Zephyr" has used them with success. They are at least twice as better than Lithium Ion. Having a generator is fine but you would also have to fly with the fuel for it.
@davidsirmons
@davidsirmons 6 лет назад
Absolutely. One-way check valves to keep flow moving directionally. The generator solution I mentioned above would not use fuel, it would use a high power battery pack. The Li-Sulphur batts you mentioned are an option, too. Hopefully soon a graphene or carbon-array battery of significant power density will be made.

Wait a minute.... Full disclosure-I am not any type of engineer, so I welcome corrections from genuinely qualified people, but this comment seems deeply flawed. If I'm reading right, you're saying using a battery to run an alternator (or similar stator/rotor-type generator device) would "create power". I don't see how. All the power you have available in the system you describe is what's contained in the battery. The alternator would juggle your output in terms of amperage and voltage, but it would not "create" a single additional erg of power other than what's already in the battery. Just use the output of the battery directly, and if it needs rectifying in some way, I think there are solid-state ways to do that. Spinning an alternator would also lose you a great deal of battery power that could otherwise be used directly to run the suit systems via friction losses in the alternator's moving parts, hysteresis, and probably two dozen other things I don't understand. Using electricity you've already got in a battery to run a generator seems to me to be a pointless (and actually counter-productive) extra step. Again, if I've misunderstood what you were trying to describe, or if I've gotten a concept wrong, I welcome any corrections.

By “due to the laws of thermodynamics” do you just mean it’ll get really hot? Or is there something specific about entropy or compression heating that would specifically affect a theoretical reactor of this size?

mark 1 didn't have supersonic, hovering or flares. just Armour and weapons, with rocket propulsion. the mark 2 had actual flight (not supersonic) and just the repulsors for combat. so no weapons, or flares just armour, and hovering. the mark 3 finally had supersonic, armour, hovering, weapons, and flares. so your statement about what the suits had only covers the mark 3 and beyond.

How about solid-state batteries or supercapacitors to power the suit? The former is being developed currently by John B. Goodenough (the guy that made lithium ion batteries practical and invented RAM), and the latter is being worked on to achieve higher energy density. Speaking of higher energy density, solid-state batteries have about the same energy density as lithium sulfur batteries, and they can be damaged without exploding. And a battery-powered iron man suit with ducted propellers for flight in many ways sounds cooler (literally!) than a suit that uses jet thrusters to fly!

While the general public may not have access to technology such as this, I believe there are some black budget programs capable of making something close to it. We more or less do have the technological capability of creating such things, but they won't let us have any access to it because it would take energy sources that would put the fossil fuel companies out of business. We could and should have efficient electric cars by now, but money is what really rules this world and the fossil fuel industry has more power than god in that respect. You can thank them for pretty much all the problems in the modern era. Even if someone did invent an arc reactor they would stop at nothing to supress it's existence and very likely already have countless times.

@synergyfiles3536

Evans Corcher Thank you. There is no single material that can withstand such impact loads unless they are coushioned. For example in space, there is space debris moving around that has a linear velocity of more than 25000 mph. The only way to withstand such debris to have cushion material in between sucessive layers of metal. The international space station moves out of the way of space debris. If you watch the initial scenes of the movie Gravity, you will notice the damaging effect of projectiles at high speed. There is no single material but a combination of materials that can stop it

We can make an Iron Man suit. What we can't do is provide motors capable of creating force 100 times the strength of a human, and the speed/mobility of movement. In the films the CGI portrays him able to move faster than he could outside of the suit, while also having the strength. Our only obstacle here is power to maintain these.
