If jet powered suits ever become economic viable, I believe they will be more used for fun than for transport. So the idea of wings may not be to useful.

So what I'm hearing is, we don't want a flying Iron Man suit, we want the Vulture suit from Spiderman Homecoming

Ironman's flight capabilities are theoretically possible(with problems), without wings and without janky jetpacks and jet suits, heres how. The suit would need enormouse amount of energy to have sustained flight, in the movies he has an arc reactor(arc "affordable, robust, compact") which is a fusion reactor that’s based on the tokamak, using magnetic fields to contain plasma at a high enough temperature(hundreds of millions of degrees Celsius) to maintain the conditions necessary for fusion. This kind of reactor is being built in france and it would be probably finished in the late 2030s and it can generate up to 270MWe of energy, that can power around 100k homes, but that kind of reactor is huge taking up way more space than the iron man suit has. Theoretically the arc reactor is possible and the rest of the suit we can already build, but there is one(probably more)big problem(s) with the arc reactor which is heat, because thr massive output of heat would kill you and melt the suit, there is currently no solution to containing that heat. CONCLUSION the suit is theoretically possible, but theres some big problems in creating it.

ionic propulsion could be an answer to the flight problem. we just have to find a method that maximizes output. I may have thought of one way, but I haven't been able to test it yet. jet boots, but ionic hand thrusters.

I was watching that episode of mythbusters, it looked like it needed the jets on his back for initial lift off but add controlled rotation to make you vertical then gradually horizontally. But allowing for smaller jets on the wrist

Exactly what I was thinking. I've been obsessed with flight for a very long time but im a broke kid. Buy i always thought these rich guys building iron man suits were going about it the wrong way. My plan is to build a suit like Richard brownings but instead of needing the suit to do all the heavy lifting like a vtol. What if you used slightly weaker engines and a some winglets on your legs as well as some "angel wings" on your arms just big enough to provide some lift at speed Theoretically you could still fly with this setup buy more like an airplane. No you wouldn't be able to vtol straight from the ground if the engines are tuned properly you could feasibly take off from a running start or even jumping off of something high and because the overall system would be only slightly negatively buoyant you could still land vertically at a standing position. I hope what I said here makes sense. In my mind you could still fly if you tuned the engines down a bit to be only slightly negatively buoyant nd relied on wings for the lift. The defined engines would allow for more flight time and less stress on the engines themselves. Landing vertically would still be possible. As soon as I have the money im going to start working on this idea
